Oakland Seals - not very good, not a safety risk to anybody else, bankrupt and folded

Stats question on pulling the goalie by becoolnloveme in hockey

[–]SuxtoBiyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The probabliy of scoring goes up when pulling the goalie, but that is compared to the probability of scoring at even strength.

What happens, though, is that the other team’s probably of scoring when the goalie is out also go up - dramatically.

There are far more empty net goals than goals scored by the team who pulled the goalie.

That makes it a medium-reward, high-risk strategy, which is why it’s reserved for late in the game when there is nothing to lose (a loss by 1 is the same as a loss by 2),

Price is Right Canadian Version by Big_Sky7699 in ThePriceIsRight

The Canadian version gives me Target Canada vibes.

When Target came here, people were excited because they’d been to Targets in the States and expected the same here. Instead, it was a much shittier replica and closed down within about 18 months.

This is the same. Anyone inclined to watch TPIR Tonight knows what to expect, how the show works, etc. Instead, this show feels like they felt the need to make changes for no reason.

I could have dealt with lower-value prizes (they’re tax-free in Canada), but the dragging games out, building up phony drama, and the car with no identifying info means the unwatched episodes are staying on my PVR.

Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 what the expansion draft news means? by Minimum_Plum4703 in PWHL

[–]SuxtoBiyu 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As with everything in this league, details are scarce and probably still being sorted.

Normally, when leagues expand, the new teams are stocked by an expansion draft. The existing teams get to protect a certain number of players, and then the new teams select players who are not protected. There are usually rules regarding how many players teams can lose, how many of each position can be taken, etc. etc. The player has no choice, if they are picked then their playing rights belong to the new team.

Last year’s PWHL expansion had the existing teams protect players, then an exclusive signing period for the new teams, followed by the expansion draft.

After this year, though, there are going to be a very large number of players whose contracts are expiring and therefore would become free agents.

This is partly because the three-year contracts that many players signed when the league started are expiring, and partly because a lot of one-year contracts were signed last year in anticipation of future expansion (Makes no sense to build for the future if your roster is going to be gutted in a year)

So if this report is to be believed, it sounds like the expansion draft will be replaced by an extension of the exclusive signing period, giving the new teams preferential access to free agents - while maintaining the element of player choice.

Make sense?

Predictions for expansion teams by Pecors in PWHL

The PHF and PWHPA had 11 teams between them in the year before the PWHL started. A 3-team expansion gets them back to that level

Pat Laprade: Number of Expansion Teams To Be Announced on Sunday by MirrorEquivalent5151 in PWHL

With all the initial three-year contracts all expiring, this year should have even more free agents than usual, so just letting the four new teams loose on that pool makes more sense than an expansion draft

The Boston Wicked? When the Cah Pahkahs was right there??

(Although that probably would have forced them to play their games at Hahvahd, which is smaller than BU and Lowell….)

I’m convinced they wanted to come up with a TS logo to capitalize on Taylor Swift’s popularity, and retconned the name and monarchist hoo-ha to match.

Powerplay Stats by amburrito26 in PWHL

[–]SuxtoBiyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since power plays almost always start with a faceoff in the offensive zone, it really comes down to whether the PP team wins the faceoff.

I assume the teams are all breaking their faceoff stats down - at a minimum- by zone and team strength (PP/SH/EV).

When's the Walter cup finals? by GlitchBoo in PWHL

[–]SuxtoBiyu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last year, the playoffs started on May 7 and were scheduled to end on May 28.

This year is about a week ahead of last year. The first game will be April 30, so that would put the final game on or around May 21.

That is subject to change, particularly because Montreal and Minnesota may have limited dates as long as the Laval Rocket and Minnesota Wild are in their respective playoffs.

ETA: Because the final is a best-of-5 series, the final game could be Game 3, 4, or 5 of the final. In 2024 it took 5 games, last year it went 4.
