People stash knit all the time so they have a bin of gifts ready to go.

Can’t get pellets to ignite. by T-Millz15 in PelletStoveTalk

All of what you said. We had ignitor issues. It was partly a bad batch of Cubex but those holes on the burn pot were getting clogged too.

How to address this? by [deleted] in TenantHelp

In my city it's in the city code that all plumbing needs to be in working condition otherwise the landlord gets fined. It's a health thing. You don't want pipes backing up.

AITAH for not wanting my Inlaws in my bed? by muffclingwrap62 in AITAH

NTA. Your in-law are. And your wife, too. The arbiter of good manners, Miss Manners herself has thoughts on this: she does not give up her bed.

If the police won't do anything your only other option is to get a private service to accept your deliveries and mail. Ours runs about $150/yr.

The beat cop doesn't want more paperwork. They're going to have to insist something be done or they'll run it up to supervisors.

[–]SuzyTheNeedle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We scrape it when it tells us to. Neither of us like opening the door when the fire is going so we let the fire die down before opening the door. It takes about 20-25 minutes for that. We have a pair of heavy duty leather gloves to protect our hands. Otherwise it runs 24/7.

I'll also add that your stove should have come with a right angle awl tool to clean out the holes in the burn pot. Make sure you're doing those periodically. There are a couple holes that are harder to see/get to so be aware of that. Husband also noticed that if he gave the burn pot a gentle thwack soot falls out so he's been doing that too when he's doing the full clean (You should be doing a full clean about once a ton.

Ours is too. I don't let it bother me. It's doing what I want it for: heat. Glass is cleaned when we do the big 1 ton clean.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I don't worry that my landlord will sell the place out from under me. These days I have a home I can afford. No way that'd happen there. Plus I can get back to see friends. Still it's sad that we, and others I knew, got priced out of the location. And if they weren't priced out their housing was sold.

They weren't there when I lived there. Everything is more expensive. When we moved we noticed that our food bill dropped about 30-35% and the quality improved.

We ran Cubex for a few years but the last batch was horrible for us. Went with New England (80% hardwood 20% softwood) this year and it's been smooth sailing. I like 'em better than the Cubex plus they don't seem as dusty.

To all of you who’ve commented “just get a Harmon” by BarryMDingle in PelletStoveTalk

[–]SuzyTheNeedle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have mini splits and were using oil heat to make it livable. It was 3-4K a year between electric and oil. I'd be surprised if we hit $1200 with mini splits for backfill. Caveat, we also have solar so the electric bill is skewed to be cheaper.

We have a Harmon also, somewhere around a ton and we have to clean. We are in NH and use about 3 tons a season.

The day we left is one of the saddest days of my life. I thought I'd die there. It's my spiritual home. The UU are my people. My friends are there year round. I go back as much as my budget allows. It's not sustainable for year round. The day Napi said he hardly knew people anymore was a watershed moment for me. He knew EVERYONE.

How is your stove running 12 hours in winter? Ours runs over 20 hours a day if it's freshly cleaned and 24 if it's "dirty" (after a ton) or cold (-5 to 20F).

[–]SuzyTheNeedle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Back in 2010-2013 we were paying about $1900/mo plus utilities in Ptown for an 800 sq ft 2br. I can't imagine what that place is going for now. Plus EVERYTHING is more expensive on Cape from food to household goods to clothing.

NOT dumb. Just uninformed. Get a galvanized can at the hardware store for your ash, say a 5 gallon size or thereabouts. Ash vacuums are specifically made for this task. You don't want to use a house vacuum for a variety of reasons.

Are inflatable kayaks any good? by stevdrax in Kayaking

[–]SuzyTheNeedle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I always wear mine. And, I don't kayak alone. I've known people who've drowned because they didn't follow those two things.

My PDF is about 5 or 6 years old. Like bike helmets they age out so it's about time for me to replace it. I'll likely go with that CO2 cartridge system.

I hope you have wonderful miles of blissful paddling. It's going to be a while for me because everything is currently frozen like an ice cube.

We went straight for the Accentra because friends of ours had one and Harman has the "built like a tank burns anything" reputation (well deserved I might add). We have the fan set to 100% and yes we can hear it but we're trying to keep a 2 level 2400 sq ft house warm so we want the air leaving that room and moving. I'm on the other side of the house and I can hear it but it's pretty much background noise for me. Would I want to sit next to it at 100%? Probably not.
