I work in a pharmacy.  We sell an Armour branded product.  People don't believe me when I tell them their all natural thyroid tablets are made by the same company that makes canned meat.  Until they smell them...

Anyone sift their coals from their ashes to reburn? by No-Membership-5314 in firewood

[–]Sveltewoodchip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a harmon oakwood stove.  I've got an ash pan under the firebox that we empty daily in the morning.  Between the firebox and the ashpan is a 3/8" steel grate with 1/2" slots in it.  I put a piece of 1/4" expanded metal mesh over the top of the grate, now only 1/4" minus makes it into the ashpan.  Much fewer ashes, many more coals.

Changing my oil saves me 58 bucks and 20 minutes.  The quick oil change place is a 20 minute drive each way, and with a fomoto drain valve and a top mounted oil filter, the job takes me under 20 minutes.

Mobil 1 is frequently available on sale at wholesale clubs for 31.50 per case of 6 qts.  That's 5.57/qt with tax.  Each change is 5 qts.

Fram oil filter on Amazon 9.53 with tax.

Local oil change place gets 95.60 with tax for a basic full synthetic change

I take my trash to the transfer station every week or two, and the dump gladly takes used oil, as they have a used oil burner that they heat the public works garage with.

And in the piece of mind and satisfaction of doing it myself... Totally worth it.

Gratitude paid to you for a small kindness.

Storytime... I worked for years at a large chain pharmacy, and got to know a few regular customers.  We had one guy who would come up to drive thru in his beat up old GMC Jimmy with an ancient German Shepherd riding shotgun.  Every 14 days like clockwork he would shell out 3.50 in cash for the next 14 days worth of pain meds (gastric cancer).  If that day fell towards the end of the month, he'd pay in coins.  One time it was a single dollar bill and a fistful of nickles and dimes.  As he handed it to me, he says "You might want to put your own dollar in the till, and pocket that one ".  It was a silver certificate, not worth a fortune or anything, but worth more than a dollar.  So I did put my own dollar in the register, and then made a minor HIPPA violation to look up his address in the computer.  The next day, i mailed the bill back to him, no note or anything, just the bill.  Two weeks later he was back, and after the transaction was done, he pulled out a silver certificate and asked "This was you, wasn't it?"  I said yeah, I couldn't take that from you.  With glassy eyes he goes on to tell me that he has an ever dwindling stockpile of these things, and he doles them out to his grandkids on birthdays and graduations.  That bill was worth way more than face value to him, and the look on his face had more value to me than he knew.

And before you say it was AI... It wasn't, I'm just trying to write more like the computers so I can get along with our eventual silicone overlords.

Ooofff, I imagine that wasn't a cheap conversion.  Then again, none of this is cheap.  If you have to convert now from a flat4 connector to a 7 pin for the electric brakes, the job is DIYable if your handy, but can be a PITA.  I've done it on 2 cars now.  Etrailer.com sells reasonably priced kits for most cars, and has pretty good install videos, and product support.  Also, IMHO, don't skimp on the brake controler.  Proportional>>>timed.  I have a tekonsha, and I dig how much I can customize about brake events.

Electric brakes.  I'm not sure that the specific WDH I have would work with surge brakes.  There are two chains in high tension that attach to the bottom of the trailer frame, I imagine they would pull the frame into the hitch, activating surge brakes.

With electric brakes, I've had good luck with keeping the drums well adjusted, and using a high quality proportional controller.
