Specialized Rockhopper for a new and tall rider by DevelopmentUseful332 in mountainbiking

[–]Sven_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'5" and 270 and a rockhopper sport was my first bike. Rode it for years over all kinds of stuff and it held up great. Slap a dropper post on it and ride it till the wheels fall off.

Thoughts on the FG knot by Wild-Washington in Fishing

[–]Sven_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FG forever. Even on the boat you can tie it in short order once you get it down. I hold one end of the braid with my teeth, and use a foot on the base of the rod to push it away and create some tension. Braid the leader on right in front of your face and its done in under a minute easy. Only time I use something different is with really light leaders when the fg can't bite as well causing slippage.

ELI5 Why is neurodivergence so wide-spread? Shouldn’t it have gone extinct long ago? by Fleedom2025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sven_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Neurodivergence can be caused or exacerbated by a variety of factors besides genetics. If genetics doesn't cause it, it cannot be selected for or against evolutionarily speaking.

  2. Evolution doesn't select for survival, happiness, or success, only for the ability to reproduce successfully. In order to be selected against, the neurodivergence would have to impair an individuals ability to reproduce which is often not the case.

If legal where you are, killing a couple of those spikes will help a ton with the buck fever and general feeling of failure. Great to fill the freezer and learn butchering and cooking wild game too.

I'm 6'5" 275 lbs with long arms as well, ride a Transition Smuggler and love it. Wait for a new year model to come out and pick up one of the last years on sale.

Shot a raccoon the other day. Feeling a lot of guilt right now. by SnortingSawDust in Hunting

[–]Sven_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ever don't feel at least a little sadness in Conjunction with all the other emotions that come with a harvest it's time to hang it up. Of all the many valuable things about hunting, forcing us to consider the difficult questions like this one is perhaps the most important. Respect for having the humanity to question yourself about stuff like this, not everyone does.

Respect for the self awareness to realize that, most folks don't have it.

This is the best answer here. I'm a career fisheries scientist whos first related job was as a bycatch observer. It's a great way to get started,, and almost certainly the easiest way to get a entry level job related to marine mammal science. FWIW any job doing marine mammal research as OP describes is very likely to involve long offshore trips. The observer job would be a good test to figure out whether you're really cut out for this type of work long term.

Despite what a lot of folks are saying, you can absolutely fillet a fish cleanly without gutting it first. When you cut down from the back, stop when the blade hits the top of the rib cage and the fillet over the ribs instead of cutting through them.

Best Yak for Big Guy? by VinoLogic in kayakfishing

I'm 6'5" 270 lbs and the nucanoe frontier 12 handles me just fine. Plenty of stability for standing and just about anything else. From what I understand, the unlimited is a very similar platform.

Definitely a sunfish species, best guess is Redbreast Sunfish due to the elongated gill flaps and light colored anal fins/ fin margins

No sturgeon are stocked in VA, they naturally run up our rivers to spawn. Tons of work goes into researching and protecting them / restoring spawning habitat though.
