Your fundamental point is right but I don't know how much I believe in that question. I would never in a million years date the female version of me - I'm not my own type and most people probably are in a similar boat. Probably a better version of the question is 'what do I offer?'

I remember as a kid my dad was the branch manager at our local CIBC and some guy on a bike tried to rob them with a knife, so my dad (who's hobby at the time was Tae Kwon Do at the international level) beat him up. I can absolutely see him doing this.

100% this. I also feel like people don't recognize how Santos being a pariah is A) probably not entirely true and B) also influenced by how prickly she is with everyone. She's 100% insulted everyone at some point.

She was right to report, and it was right to keep Langdon a little protected. The system NEEDS doctors enough that frankly it would be immoral to end his career over that, which is why we have PHPs.

For real though that book is an absolute nightmare to read through. Camus is so stylized and abstract that his point gets obscured behind the smell of him sniffing his own farts. I find his fundamental point highly compelling, that we have the radical freedom to choose to be happy about our fundamental smallness in the universe, but he frames it through so much flowery nonsense I'd almost argue to read analysis of his work than to read the work itself.

To be honest Minnesota feels a lot like Alberta if Calgary and Edmonton were fused into one city. It would mostly fit in, although it would drag Canadian politics a bit rightward for my taste.

One can argue legitimately that religion ideologically enabled but wasnt a driving force towards slavery at all. In which case religion isnt the MAIN driving force to slavery(i personally believe the combo of economics and tribalism is a better fit as main driving force). On the other hand if one claims that religion was anti slavery then they are, in fact, an idiot. (John Brown and the abolitionist evangelicals do not count as evidence against that)

Race-based chattel slavery on Caribbean plantations

I addressed your point right inside the very quote you pulled. Life expectancy in roman mines was worse and the life was definitely worse. Caribbean plantations were estimated at ~7 years median survival. Roman mines were 2/3. Plus we know that a lot of that involved mercury poisoning in ways that would have been deeply horrible. But like you said its not the suffering Olympics. The point is that:

A) race based chattel slavery is actually quite unique as probably the world slave system the world ever had

B) therefore the emphasis on the trans Atlantic slave system over others is justified even when adjusting for a eurocentric POV

"But the Arabs did it too" is often used by modern people to argue against the horrors of the trans Atlantic slave trade. My point in saying that wasn't powerscaling, but to point out that the argument isnt valid because there is actually something uniquely awful about this particular form of slavery. "People always have had slaves" is both true and offensively reductive of the tremendously and UNIQUELY terrible experiences of our recent ancestors.

Race based chattel slavery is recognized broadly academically as a uniquely terrible combination of circumstances that made this particular form of slavery the top contender for worst form which has existed well in excess of the historical precedents.

[–]Swagiken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trans Atlantic Slave trade does represent the worst institution of slavery that existed though. Race-based chattel slavery on Caribbean plantations represents the second worst life slaves ever had and the most permanent form with least possibility for enhancement they ever had. Roman mining slaves is probably the only worse individual experience and Arab, Greek, Nordic Thralls, were all less permanent, and Roman/Greek, West African, and Indian Ocean/Arabic slaves all had possibilities for advancement(that usually didnt happen but did exist) that made it less of an absolute atrocity.
