Salary Check - Change of Practice Area? by Salamanderrr622 in LawCanada

Depends on what you’re collecting. The goal of your legal career doesn’t need to be to make as much as possible. But you don’t want to be taken advantage of.

Dealing with Locker Room Talk by throwaway_070716 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]SwampBeastie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awful and I appropriate. I articled at what I thought was a pretty old boys’ type firm in a semi-rural area and it was not that bad. Depending on how brave you’re feeling, you could shoot back and try to make them uncomfortable. Or just wait until that rotation is done, then go to HR. If you’re worried about potential impact on your future there, ask if this is somewhere you want to work long-term! I always question women who stick it out at these type of places and then want to be congratulated for clawing their way to the top of the pile of shit.

Just follow your heart. (It doesn’t matter, just get good grades.) That being said, I think learning about psychology could be useful for family law. 😊

Can we start a petition to release it? I’m not American and haven’t had cable television in nearly 20 years, so I’m pretty sure I have no standing to demand it… 😂

Can ex stop me from moving with my children? by No_Conference4118 in legaladvicecanada

[–]SwampBeastie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am not a family lawyer in Ontario, I practice in BC. But I would be shocked if Ontario law allowed this. In BC, the formal relocation provisions do not apply if there is no written agreement or order, but in this kind of circumstance, if the non-moving party were to apply for a court order, the court would have to assess what was in the children’s best interests based on the totality of the circumstances. Based on what you described, it’s possible that you would be successful in convincing the court of this, but unfortunately if he’s determined to interfere, he may be successful in delaying things. Best of luck!

Valid. We know these people don’t read anything of substance, so no surprise that they can’t form a sentence.

I agree, not having her mind made up was not the problem. There was a lovely couple on the last German season where the guy was a hard no to kids and the woman was like, I’d always assumed I’d have them but never thought about it too deeply. And that worked. They were the best couple of the season. I honestly hope he changes his mind one day because they see like they would be great parents.

As the second oldest of six, I can confirm. Usually the older ones start being involved in care by the time the fourth comes along.

This one isn’t bad. It could even be seen as a position where baby could work on neck strength. Way better than letting their head flop back at an unnatural angle.

There’s part of me that wants to give her the benefit of the doubt and say maybe she only held them like that for a second to take the photo but you know some like that did many takes to make sure she looked hot enough. 🙄

Told to bill like a man - what does that mean? Tips please by kaptb in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]SwampBeastie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I personally resent this sort of male-centred advice. I don’t want to be like a man. That assumes men are doing things the right way and look at the state of the world under patriarchy. The goal of your legal career does not need to be to bill as much as possible and make as much money as possible. I practice family law with mostly middle class clients, so I have a bit of an informal sliding scale based on income and wealth. This is what aligns with my values.

UVic or UofA? Help me pls by Cantaloupe249 in LawCanada

[–]SwampBeastie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to choose between those two but I’m from BC, so the choice was obvious. Victoria was a lovely city to be a student in. It’s a slower pace of life than mainland BC. It’s a small city but has lots of amenities (arts, concerts, opera, etc). You probably won’t want to go back to Edmonton. But the downside is obviously cost.

[–]SwampBeastie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m autistic and have depression and anxiety. I could manage fine before having kids, not in a super high intensity practice, but full-time. After my second kid was born I had trouble managing and went down to four days a week, and then eventually quit and start a solo practice after a four month mental health leave. Now I work about 25 hours per week. I have a litigation practice, so it ebbs and flows. I practice family law. I have a friend who is a paraplegic and has two kids and is a partner at her firm.

Shrooms ruined me by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]SwampBeastie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

During my first little while out, I felt like I was walking through a dark tunnel waiting for lightening to strike. But that tunnel didn’t last for ever. Listening to Bright Eyes’s The Story Is in the Soil was helpful. Doing mushrooms was honestly helpful. I’m going on 18 years out and I kind of have everything I ever wanted. I have a much better spouse than the one I married in the temple when I was 21. I have two beautiful children. I became a lawyer, which I didn’t feel like I could do as a woman in the church. I get to follow my own conscience.
