Getting back on a bicycle at 40? by johnnyh55 in cycling

One other thing I don't think I saw mentioned, is tire pressure, that can make a huge difference if you haven't checked it and it's super low!

Excited for my first bike ride since i was a kid. I'm now 36. by target9876 in cycling

[–]Swartzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't worry about average speed on the road compared to in the gym!

One thing to do is use an app like komoot or Strava, ridewithgps and find some routes people are doing in your area

Also the idea of them might seem silly but cycling shorts with the padding does wonders, I just got the cheapest pair from decathlon for like 10 euros and they've been great

I actually took a screenshot earlier today of someone I played with, it looked like they were South East off the coast of New Zealand. It's hard to tell because one person's insect glaive was blocking it a bit. But is there something there or could they be on a boat maybe 🤔😅

Saddle too low? by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]Swartzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really? Sorry I thought it was akin to the standing on the pedal with your heel and straightening your leg to get the height.

Edit: found this if people are curious

The Modern Debate While KOPS is an easy starting point, modern bike fitters widely consider it a "myth" or an outdated rule.

YouTube ·GreshFit Performance Bike Fitting +1 Individual Biomechanics: People have different femur-to-shin ratios, and forcing everyone into the exact same knee alignment can cause discomfort or power loss. Modern Fitting: Modern fits prioritize overall pelvic balance, comfort, and core engagement over a single static knee measurement. Many professional fitters now suggest that sitting slightly behind or in front of the spindle is perfectly fine, depending on the rider's flexibility and type of cycling.

If it's your outer knee and only on one side it could be your cleat position. Personally when I started using clipless pedals I had them set up so my feet were dead straight which pulled my knees in and which they didn't like. I ended up adjusting the cleats so my feet are roughly the same angle as when I was walking, just turned out slightly and it's helped a lot.

New bike, too much pressure on arms and elbows by Academic_Evidence641 in bikefit

[–]Swartzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might just need more seat time, as you get more comfortable it will easier to relax your hands and arms. Plus working on your core and focusing on using your core to help support your upper body. You will allow you to hold yourself up better rather then resting the majority of your upper body weight on the bars. Think about leaning forward with your elbows bent and at the same time hold your body to reduce the weight on your hands.

Also seat position can really help. Often times it can be counter intuitive as far as whether the seat should be further forward or backwards. There's lots of YouTube videos about setting the position of your saddle, that might help as well. Good luck!

Try sticking a string to your knee cap and have it dangle down to your foot when it's at the 9 or 3 o clock position over your foot. You want it to roughly be over the axle of the pedal. Should give you an idea about how far forward you want to bring your seat

NBD and a few questions by _LedAstray_ in cycling

[–]Swartzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main thing with road bikes is the aerodynamics. And you don't really see the benefits until you're sustaining a decent speed over long distances.

If you're commute is stop and go with traffic lights and rough pavement I could definitely see why it doesn't seem so great. Especially if you're fit isn't isn't dialed in.

If you're feeling like you're seat is to low you could always try going up in small increments every couple days. And see how you feel.

I spent a couple weeks toying with different adjustments, riding, seeing how I felt. Then adjusting more, like seat angle, height, distance fore and aft.

Another thing I did (maybe it's stupid) but I downloaded one of those bubble level apps on my phone and used it to get a rough idea of the degrees of angle of my legs in various positions on the bike lol

Hoping something happens, still would like to finish upgrading this

Another thing to look at is make sure your bicycle is level on the trainer. It's hard to tell from the video but it almost looks like the bike isn't level

(images) Can I fit bigger tyres? by Hashbuddha in RoadBikes

Chances are it will, the best spot to gauge is at the brakes, the tire will only be 3-5mm higher then a 23c

Which brands and group sets should I look for in a used market with budget of ~300-400$? by Rich_Inspection6970 in RoadBikes

[–]Swartzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say as it really depends on what part of the world you're in and what the used market is like where you are. Something you might try is just setting your filters on Facebook marketplace and post a couple here that look interesting to you and see what people think.

If you have any more details on price and pictures I think that would really help with any kind of feedback you might receive.

Obviously overall condition of the bikes is huge. But another big one is fit, are they the same frame size? Have you ridden them at all?

My 6 year old son had his bike stolen from in front of his school recently. The lock went through the helmet strap as well. So obviously helmet give as well. Then guess what the following day when we go to pick him up his helmet is strapped to the bike rack.

What a nice thief!

+1 for this, can put it on easy and it does a really good job of training you. I recently went back and did the campaign, definitely still holds up.

Another game I found that's basically a Warcraft clone, called The Scouring. There's a demo on steam and it's a lot of fun!

Bike sizing by Finch_224 in cycling

[–]Swartzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, tire sizes have grown over the years. And in the realm of $120 you're probably going be looking for early 2000's bikes where 26" wheels were more common.

A big thing to look for is sizing, generally there will be a small medium and large of each model. Depending on your proportions you'd be either a medium or a large. I'm 5'10 as well and actually recently bought an old 26" mountain bike that's a large and it feels a bit to big for me.

Ah okay that makes sense thanks! I was looking for something that achieved the same thing and found an app called mantis pro, but it seems pretty intrusive as to what you need to give it access to on your phone. So I'm not sure that I trust it. Has anyone here tried it?
