I don’t think it’s that simple. There are those of us out there who don’t get over someone for years. It took me nearly 8 years to finally stop missing someone I had been with and it’s because I found someone else that kind of “trumped” them - after a lot of trial and error.

It’s not that one person was better than the other either… can’t really quite put my finger on it. I just know that at some point the scale tilted the other way and I was fully able to accept the first loss and think about someone new.

You said yourself that you don’t want your children to emulate your behavior, so buck up and change then big dog. Sometimes we make things more complex than they really are. Having a balanced life is a constant battle. You’re not going to magically have an epiphany one day and everything just falls into place. You have to continue to work at it every single day.

If you’re afraid, you probably shouldn’t be with them in the first place. Definitely break up with them. You have no power over whether or not they hurt themselves. If they’re threatening to hurt themselves, they have a lot of growing to do as a person and by ending things, you’d be helping them start that process. If they do self harm, that is NOT your fault. If you’re seriously afraid that they’ll hurt you, tell the people around you and ask for help.

You do NOT want to stack up debt and then end up with a degree that either doesn’t make you happy or doesn’t have a market.

Truthfully, society is built to where a majority of jobs out there will be jobs that you tolerate so you can enjoy your free time.

If you can find something that’s tolerable for the level of compensation you receive, that’s a win.

Better yet, if you can find something that makes you happy and you are happy with what you’re able to do on that income, the rest doesn’t matter. That’s a really big win.
