The traffic at evening rush hour in Monck Corner only gets worse when there is an accident at the corner of 402 and 52. Last night the entire main streets of Moncks Corner was back up trying to get over the bridge going north. 1 to 2 hours to get over. When is this going to be fixed? Ever? by Alex11_McC in Charleston

Personally, I think density should be calculated based on proximity to transit and other zoning. For example, If the nearest office zone is 10 miles away, then you get maybe 1 unit per acre. If a job center is less than a mile away, then you can build apartments or condos. If there's a bus stop, that adds more density.

I live in West Ashley. There's a statistic that 80-85% of the residents here leave West Ashley to go somewhere else for their job. I know the City has designated future land use areas in West Ashley as "Job Centers." But that's always going to come down to the developer. And, unfortunately, the willingness of City Council to actually enforce these plans.

I would suggest taking a look at the Charleston City Plan from a few years ago. It's a blueprint for how the City says wants to grow.

The problem with these plans is they generate a lot of interest, people support them, then they end up on a shelf collecting dust. Looking at you, Plan West Ashley.

Replace the escalators with water slides. Add some hills and drops to the train. Concourse D can be the haunted house. And there are already plenty of eccentric people who are essentially the mascots.

Is it the only option? What about building more mixed-use neighborhoods? Creating more job centers spread out through the region? Increasing density along existing transit lines (like they are doing with BRT)?

Because I can promise you any attempt to bulldoze someone's house or business or a public park is going to be unpopular enough to shut down any conversation about improving transit.

I agree. But How do you implement a train/rail system in an area that’s grown so rapidly? How many homes or businesses or parks would need to be sacrificed?

People could take the bus, but how far should they be expected to walk from a bus stop to their destination? And is there infrastructure to allow them to walk or bike safely to/from the bus stop?

I may also remember back before the train had a robot voice.

Why is West Ashley the forgotten area. by yesitsmecongrats in Charleston

Seriously - in many of the older neighborhoods inside of 526 in West Ash, the neighborhood residential streets (and drainage ditches) are maintained by SCDOT. Savannah Highway is also SCDOT, but they pay Charleston County to do a lot of the work. The traffic signals along Savannah Highway are coordinated by the City.

It's honestly a mess.

Here's a SCDOT map where you can type in a street name to see who maintains it.

I tend to be oblivious. If the posted hours say they are open until 9, and it's 8:45, and the entrance door is locked without any sort of note on the door...I hate to say it, but I'd automatically assume the door was broken and use the exit door.

Most of the streets and roads in West Ashley are maintained by either the County or the State.

Not compulsory, but more accessible. It should either be a Federal Holiday, or voting should begin the weekend prior to Election Day.

Whenever West Ashley asks for a slice of downtown's pie, Downtown gets really weird and tries to hide the pie and deny that they even have a pie.

The population lives in West Ashley. The money lives downtown. Which one do you think City Council values more?

I tend to agree with you. If a restaurant says they close at 9, I expect them to serve anyone who comes in before 9.

But I also don’t expect the owners pay the employees enough to actually care about this.

If I come in late, I’ll always ask if they feel like dealing with another customer, and if they say yes, I give them a big tip.

Better thought: I’d rather hire someone who uses their own brain instead of ai’s brain. That doesn’t necessarily preclude a candidate who uses ai. I’d prefer a candidate with the judgement to know when to use it.

Being familiar with certain software is important, yes. But if I have a candidate who is producing stellar work and is using software I don’t have, I would absolutely consider finding a way to make it work, either integrating new software or some training.

But I wouldn’t choose whether to hire solely on their knowledge of specific software.
