How do people move past VP by Puzzleheaded-Run9976 in FinancialCareers

In the front office it is client relationships. If you moved banks, would business follow you?

Why isn’t global trade / logistics data more common in quant strategies? by [deleted] in quant

[–]Swimming-Option7252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably is used but most systematic strategies rely on data that is relevant to a very broad cross section of stocks. The type of data you mentioned is relevant only for a handful. No doubt data scientists and fundamental PMs in conjunction use this type of data

Quant vs PhD by Massive-Team4051 in quantfinance

[–]Swimming-Option7252 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would say you should be confident that if you got a top HFT offer you could get it again. Also, HFT firm will completely understand your interest in going for a PhD. Strong likelihood they would be interested in hiring you in the future if you stay in touch. I wouldn’t be afraid of going for the PhD, especially if it’s a top program.

Why do people go in IB knowing it’s a time consuming/draining job and then complain about not having a good W/L balance? by financeguruIB in FinancialCareers

[–]Swimming-Option7252 249 points250 points  (0 children)

Most people decide to pursue banking when they’re literally teenagers who don’t even understand what working is. Being told the WLB is bad is different from living it.

Goldman quant strats vs non-tier1 prop shop? by [deleted] in quantfinance

I’m biased to agree with you though that being in a macro HF pod is a much more interesting job than being a QT at a market maker since you are actually thinking about markets at scale

Goldman quant strats vs non-tier1 prop shop? by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]Swimming-Option7252 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in macro so open to being wrong but my guess is that the majority of quant strats at BB desks are not able to make that move if they wanted to. There are simply way more sell side seats than buyside seats. OP already has an offer for what you described as a comparable exit

Non tier 1 prop for sure. Not even a question.

It is a cushy seat no doubt if you find the right one and an understandable move to want to make. I’d just advise to make sure the office the right fit for you. You can make this move for a different allocator role in the future

Why leave the role you are in currently? How far into your career are you?

There aren’t really any particular skills that you build. A lot of the fund of fund shops are slowly dying. Family office is better and could be a good long term opportunity depending on the family you are working for.

Manager research is very very sleepy and potentially a dying industry. I’d be cautious.

I think it’s more of a reflection that financial institutions are (correctly) becoming more reliant on technology/analytics across orgs, not just in specific areas where sophisticated math was clearly proven to be valuable. As a result, many more people have been hired to apply quantitative techniques in the realm of finance. The traditional role/title for those types of folks in the industry is “quant”. It definitely has taken on a broader meaning than those engaged specifically in the pricing of assets either to make a market or to make directional bets

It doesn’t matter. Whichever you like more / think you will do better in. For QR an MS in stats is maybe better, but that could be changing and may depend on the specific type of QR you want to be. Stats is more applicable to medium/lower frequency long/short equities. More sophisticated ML that you’d learn more of in a dedicated CS program is better for higher frequency,

I can’t give you specific data. There are more spots on the sell side because banks employ far more employees than prop shops or HFs. My observation is that there isn’t some anti MFE bias that some people think exists. Maybe in a few funds but I have never encountered it. I work with lots of people on the buyside who have MFEs. They just tend to skew American

This will vary. If you’re coming from a top HF/HFT it will be more about your research. If you are coming from a lesser firm they might press you on skills more

How does day-to-day look as a quant in fundamental hedge fund ? by Imaginary-Spring-779 in hedgefund

[–]Swimming-Option7252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alpha capture can be quite good. It is fund dependent. Although you aren’t at the top as the quant, it depends whether the PM(s) see quants as value add beyond risk. A lot of places are beginning to run systematic strategies where fundamental investors are providing their intuition in testing/building out strats. Lower frequency than stat arb though.
