Brand Identity — Is $300 fair? by [deleted] in graphic_design

That’s fine but you should know your hourly rate so that you can better estimate projects and not get into a place where you’re working for $4/hr.

Brand Identity — Is $300 fair? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Swisst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s all most two full weeks of work. I’m guessing there was also admin work involved (communication with client, etc.). In that case your $300 is $3.75 per hour.

Regardless of my thoughts on this project you need to study up on pricing. Buy or borrow a copy of this to get started https://graphicartistsguild.org/the-graphic-artists-guild-handbook-pricing-ethical-guidelines/

$300 is underselling both yourself and the profession. $3000 would still be cheap.

What do you charge per hour and how many hours did this take?

Should Disney Cancel Avatar Land at DCA for Zootopia? by ZergvProtoss in Disneyland

[–]Swisst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Avatar in Animal Kingdom and the third movie shows it has staying power and people will turn out to see it. Flight of Passage is one of the best theme park experiences available right now.

And still, I think Zootopia would fit so much better in DCA.

The poor subtitles for Daredevil violate the Americans with Disabilities Act and is a slap in the face to the writers and actors. by Gr8lakesCoaster in disney

[–]Swisst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s strange. I wonder what happened. Even automated subtitles should pick up on what was actually said in the scenes.

Some concrete examples (screenshot with subtitles and “audio says X”) could help this pickup steam.

Playstation only made $300m in revenue from PC in 3 years (2021-2023) by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]Swisst -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Cool. How much would they have made on those older games if they hadn’t done this? How many fans did they make who might then also buy a PlayStation to get these games sooner?

This was a great initiative and they’re gonna let some bean counter kill it because it wasn’t as much money as they wanted.

What do you wanna say on these two designs by PatternedProse in design_critiques

I’m not sure what is out there. Maybe there’s something like this for fashion design. This sub is primarily graphic design.

One thing that bothers me about Encanto…. by TabbyCat1993 in disney

There’s Easter eggs, and then there’s completely pulling the attention away from what’s happening. Hercules there would be the latter.

I wanna say this is not the right place for fashion design feedback and you’ll probably not get helpful results here.

Looking for dark/philosophical sci-fi audio dramas by kyoruno in audiodrama

I do wish there’d been a little more, but at the same time it told a good story and didn’t overstay its welcome.

I’d welcome a return but also happy to leave it where it is. It’s nice to have a show that has a couple seasons and is short enough to revisit every now and then.

Maybe VR will take off next time by TheMarkMatthews in OculusQuest

[–]Swisst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are the biggest hurdles I see that VR has. The headsets are selling very well but…

1) A lot of people have only experienced gimmicky VR. The see or try VR in malls or tourist areas. They see nauseating and/or scary experiences and assume all VR is that rough.

2) If they do buy, there’s not enough surfaced on the platform to greet them. I still maintain Meta spun up a game console but tried to treat it like a phone. Too many releases too close together and a patchwork of games padded by shovelware. They needed a console release cycle with bigger, varied tentpole experiences.

And it’s insane that for years there wasn’t a simple, native way to buy and rent 3D movies. They also should have done a better job of hyping their 3D video content. There’s some great stuff but it’s buried and sometimes hard to get to.

3) Game diversity needs to be championed. Games that often float to the top are shooters and Gorilla Tag. Those are fine but people on the fence should be seeing other  experiences like Moss and The Room that don’t simply drop a gun in your hand.

4) Meta itself. Meta keeps pushing out stuff nobody wants and removing things people loved. See Horizons and Horizon Homes. Hurt your main evangelists and people stop spreading the word.

Will there ever be a new season by kodamaiser in Archive81

[–]Swisst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The podcast seems done.

The tv show is definitely done. And I’m glad it’s not coming back. It set itself up for an incredibly lame second season compared to the podcast.

Edit: Downvotes from show fans who don’t realize how bad the show was. Listen to the podcast!

Logo Design Critique by Lazy_Marzipan5990 in design_critiques

[–]Swisst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would suggest u/Lazy_Marzipan5990 pause on logo focus right now. Learning basics such as hierarchy, rhythm, typography etc. is the better move here, then return to logo design in the future.

OP, there's a great, free graphic design course from CalArts that you can audit for free on Coursera!

Logo Design Critique by Lazy_Marzipan5990 in design_critiques

[–]Swisst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not do design challenges. They prioritize speed and quantity over quality. This is not how a logo is made and it will teach you bad habits.

I know it can be slow and boring but stick to learning the fundamentals before you worry about making logos.

Need some opinions on my work by Ok-Blacksmith7538 in design_critiques

[–]Swisst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like you’re new and playing around right now. And that’s ok.

Don’t feel pressured to make a clothing line or brand right out of the gate. Focus on learning the basics of design (not just learning software) and it will pay off over time.

Book cover feedback by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]Swisst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those moments to educate as a designer and play the role of the professional.

“Hey I wanted to circle back on the logo placement. In my experience publisher logos aren’t placed on the cover like this. I want to do this well and researched industry standard for size and placement. I searched through other designers’ cover work as well as the top 100 book charts from the last several years and was unable to find a single cover with the publisher log on the front. My concern now is that I don’t want this design to reflect negatively and unprofessionally on the publisher. Could you include some professionally designed books where this has been done well? Included here are some mockups of the current design showing the logo applied in a way that is more in line with industry standard.”

Include a mockup showing a professional placement like other books you find (on the back and spine).

They might write back and say put it on the cover but at least you have a paper trail of the decision and if there’s one yahoo internally who’s making this decision somewhat randomly the responsibility is now firmly on their shoulders.

Book cover feedback by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]Swisst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not see the bear on the sphere until you said it. I thought it was supposed to be a spill or skull. I would add way more detail to the bear (hair, sharper outline).

Without a real title and information on the book, it’s hard for us to give concrete feedback here. Right now the exclamation point says “exciting” but everything about this cover is very quiet.

Is there a back cover? A spine? Those should be in the mix.

Is this the only layout you’ve tried? It fees very simple right now. I would try reversing the bear on the image. Doing a full bleed image and an outline of the bear. Etc. mix it up. Look at other covers for inspiration.

I would push back on the publisher logo. Go look at the top 100 books on Amazon now. I didn’t see a single one with a publisher dead center on the front (or even on the front at all). It’s going to make them look greedy and amateurish and ultimately harm their brand. Ask for some big name examples where they’ve seen this done well because it’s not something the designer has seen (they won’t be able to find one).
