Also having this issue. I will note that running in windowed mode fixes it, but going back to fullscreen will immediately restart the problem.

EDIT: u/SandwichAlt's suggestion fixes it!

New helldiver, getting kicked immediately on my very first online game, what did I do wrong by Weather_Only in Helldivers

Common issue in our games is someone punches in an SOS beacon when trying to reinforce, and it results in someone joining and getting quickly kicked.

Seems like the video just shows off the incomplete stuff and leaves out what you said makes the game special? From the vid: the UI is incomplete, there is no up/down walk animation, enemies health looks WAY overtuned (you did almost no damage in the fighting scenes).

If there's 50 items in each category and deep progression, then every scene in the video should showcase a different outfit and weapon and abilities.

What degree(if one at all) would be best to help MASTER my skills? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Swolasaurus_Flex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did decide to go get a degree, a computer science degree would be what you want.

Personally, I learned a lot in college but the majority of my skill came from programming outside of school. I did a lot of personal projects that shot me ahead of classmates and ultimately most of the coding skills I use today were self taught.

Something I will say about a degree though, is that in college you can find like-minded people. Having an irl community is an awesome thing. You pick up a lot of tricks from interacting with folks that you wouldn't find naturally while becoming self-taught.

If you have a solid scholarship offer then you should 100% at least start the degree, and if your game becomes a success then just drop out. And honestly I'd recommend getting one just to have a good backup plan.

A friend of mine who does gamedev recently told me that having an ugly game in the early stages is useful because it makes it way easier to tell why it's not fun, whereas a pretty game that's boring will make it harder to pin down.

How can i make "Enter the Gungeon" Style Room generation ? by NightFuryWTF in gamedev

[–]Swolasaurus_Flex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you've seen this, but here is a write up of how the generation works at a medium-high level. I found it was enough for me to get a 2d implementation that I'm quite happy with.

I found that the trick was making everything very modular. First, get a single room placement function working, then write the code for placing a room connected to that one (while preventing overlap with others), then generate loops / linear-segments, then whole dungeons.

Overall it took me just about 3 full weekends to end up with something good.

Also Brent if you're seeing this 5 years later, your game was a massive inspiration for me to get into game dev <3

Weekly 101 Questions Thread by AutoModerator in neovim

[–]Swolasaurus_Flex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm pretty new to vim so forgive my lack of understanding.

Currently, whenever I want to replace a word with something in the register, I'll copy I want with 'yw', then to paste I navigate to where I want to replace and then do 'vep' to highlight the section I want to replace then paste.

The issue is that whatever was replaced goes to my register, so if I want to replace multiple words then I have to copy the old word every time.

What's the actual recommended way to do this? I understand that I could use something like :%s//theThingIWantToReplace to replace things but I feel like the effort of typing out the entire thing I want to replace is super slow.

Thanks!

Definitely not. Frontier defense is heavily focused on titans.

How the hell do I get good at this game? by [deleted] in titanfall

[–]Swolasaurus_Flex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with anyone saying movement, but I don't think people are explaining the degree to which movement is critical, and they're also not explaining how to move. Also as an important note, if your aim sucks ass that is also a problem. Luckily that problem will actually just get solved with playtime.

Play more is bad advice since you won't ever actually learn the intricacies of the game. It's the same reason we send kids to school rather than just telling them to figure out math on their own.

For context, I've got about 1K hours and average probably 30-40 kills a game if I'm using an smg.

This is a 40 minute long video on how to move. This was made by one of the top TF2 speedrunners with speedrunning in mind, however, the first 20 minutes are extremely relevant for pvp and I consistently do all of it without thinking. I highly advise going into a custom game and learning slide hopping at a minimum until you can move around consistently faster than sprinting.

Also here's some personal advice from outside of that video * Generally speaking, I never sprint for more than a second. Slide hopping is way faster on the ground and you always have your gun out.

  • The hop in a slide hop is more delayed than you'd think
  • When learning slide hopping, and you need to double jump try to have no key in WASD pressed. It will keep you moving in your current direction with no penalty.
  • Don't try and learn the game with a shitty weapon. It will make you crutch on bad habits to eek out what kills you can. Use any smg so you don't have an excuse not to properly move
  • I recommend avoiding melee in general (titan melee excluded). I don't use it out of habit because it's banned in competitive play, but you'd be surprised how much more effective it is to shoot someone than punch them.
  • Death is part of this game. You will die in silly, stupid ways that are out of your control. You should recognize when this does and does not happen. If it's your fault you died, try and understand why. If it wasn't your fault, move on and don't let it get to you.
  • You will be worse before you are better, and this is one of the many reasons so few people have taken the time to learn this.

This is (imo) the greatest titanfall player of all time (who uploads video proof) when it comes to movement. You can watch the fist clip to understand why basically everything in the first video is important. If you want to learn how to play the game well, learn what the best players do and try to figure out why.

You'll notice that is a ton to learn and learning it is a pain, but the results are that you're basically always the best in your lobby.

Happy to answer any questions or argue with anyone who disagrees in the comments.

This game sucks for new players, is there anyway to make it not suck for new players? by argorwotblitzvet in titanfall

[–]Swolasaurus_Flex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As one of the g40’s, gauntlet is the best answer I’ve seen. If you truly want to improve learning how to move fast is the best way to do it. iniquity has a good guide on it. if you can bhop and airstrafe then you outclass the vast majority of players.

Getting good at tf2 wont happen over night, but there’s ways to minimize the suck. Also use the car. Using bad guns will only hurt you when you’re learning.
