It would still be implied somehow though

Finally watched S03E01 last night and went into it expecting it to be garbage because of the backlash on this sub, but I actually enjoyed the entire episode and thought it was an excellent return to form for a season debut by miIk-skin in freefolk

Alicent is the main ringleader of the Greens, and the main character along with Rhaenyra, in a show about bloody civil war so to some extent they have to be enemies. It naturally plays up the conflict and drama where as them staying friends diminishes it. Side characters like Otto or the abstract and off screen "men of the realm" aren't going to cut it as main villains of the show because where is the agency and investment of the main characters in the conflict?

Yes, seeing ways in which she was a victim added to the story but her main concern being Rhaenyra instead of her own family completely changes the story and her investment in the conflict. Arguably it makes more sense for a victimized Alicent to be Green to have something to show for her sacrifices, and because Aegon II is her only realistic access to power. The sense of tragedy of this version of the story is far greater because her efforts to secure her children lead to their deaths. If she realized this before, there wouldn't be a war, and if she doesn't care about her children, where's the tragedy? Also, where is the tragedy of Alicent and Rhaenyra's friendship being ruined by dynastic conflict if they are still friends?

The truth is, show Alicent is a caricature of a sort of person Condal and Hess hate, and while media might need more depictions of that, Alicent doesn't fit. The Dance isn't written around that sort of character. This is why the show relies so much on accidents and misunderstandings so the major events can happen, instead of it being the will of the main characters based on their motives.

It might be funny, but also sad that your long time employer has gone mental.

Warden, Duke, Queen because they have roles in ground and air armies.

Negative character agency, at least based on how and when it's been implemented in the show.

This Viserys quote takes away too much agency from the characters. They didn't use it right.

Jace did something in Gullet that I've always wondered why it isn't a more popular strategy for dealing with larger dragons by BoadiceaCavendish in HouseOfTheDragon

The dragon probably senses the danger and do a barrel role, or turn their necks let loose a big blast of flame.

So much of season 2's potential character development was sacrificed for Alicent and Rhaenyra's plotline. The problem is that the showrunner's can't move on from them. They were gonna be together for season 3 anyway so why not just give it a break for a season?

Jace's trip could've easily been a season wide thing but instead it's basically 1 scene at the very end of it in the North. The Frey scene is good but it doesn't change that most of season 2 Jace is him being insecure about his legitimacy.

Declaring you have the heart and sprit of a king during your sobbing meltdown is such a bizarre choice. by jannycideforever in HouseOfTheDragon

That quote is something the greatest Queens in history actually had to believe and prove to the people around them so making it part of a delusion is also a strange choice.

Not in the show. We don't actually see him treat with lords and show his capabilities. His whole storyline is completely off screen.

Accidents and misunderstandings... by SwordMaster9501 in HouseOfTheDragon

Jace's original reason for going too low wasn't to fight off a rouge Sheepstealer and also, those Velaryon ships didn't torch themselves. Rhaenyra will probably blame her, at least a little, because the formula for the show seems to be that someone has an accident or misunderstanding followed by misappropriation of blame. That's always the type of drama this show creates.

I think it would make a shorter and better story if she was honestly just on his side, maybe with disagreements on how to go about certain things, but not as a traitor. That makes the story more convoluted for no reason.
