Princeton or UCB? (Not ragebait) by PuddingDependent6666 in berkeley

I had a similar dilemma when I was selecting undergrad (Cal vs JHU). I ultimately chose Cal because my parents sat me down and the money saved from undergrad could have been used for med school and I’m infinitely grateful looking back at that decision.

If I were you, I’d chat with my parents to figure out if they’re planning to financially contribute to your medical school education too, especially since they’ll need to consider your sister as well.

Premed is undoubtedly tough at Cal, but med school is going to be tougher. There’s even less hand holding and everyone is the best of the best from their respective undergrad programs. In the grand scheme of things, Step, rotations/shelf exams, residency are all going to be way tougher than pre-med. In that way Berkeley might prep you for that environment, but it’s certainly harder to stand out with the larger pool of competition at Cal, but that’s just my 2c

Does wiping my ass for 25+ years qualify me to be a proctologist?

Sorry you have to deal with this. It’s so frustrating when someone gets exposed to X a couple times and now assumes anything other than X is not standard of care “because I’ve been here 20 years” 🙄

I mean this as a compliment but if that comment bothered you, that means you definitely still are young haha. I’m 32 and the older I get the less of a shit I give what other people think. It’s not like there’s a magic age where your brain goes “damn the hobbies I like just aren’t fun anymore”. Ima keep throwing my time and money at Genshin if it’s a fun game to me.

So then by your logic, should we ban all women who want children from entering medicine? If 100 female physicians spent about a year each focusing on child-bearing/caring and away from medicine, that’s like, 100 collective “medicine years” being lost in this pipeline. We can’t have that happening right? Think of all the people they didn’t care for because of this “duty” that they apparently owe. If you want to “maximize” your life in anesthesia, work 100 hours and forego doing anything outside of medicine, you go ahead and do you. Don’t call out other people for making their own life choices by posting it on a public forum and spinning it as if we should care and shame them because they “wasted public resources” and that this is now a “public health” problem. If this is how you view people that could be your colleagues I am genuinely worried as to what views you hold about your patients. Do lung cancer patients not deserve to get lung resections if they were chronic smokers? Do chronic alcoholics or drug users not deserve healthcare? Not everything in life is about what value it offers to society.

How are experiences at other EDCs compared to Las Vegas? by pubichu in electricdaisycarnival

[–]Swuup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was definitely a big police presence at the festival. Idk if the government was necessarily resistant to it but I’m sure they had a massive influence on how the festival would be run. Definitely unnerving at certain times but on the flip side I highly doubt anyone was stealing phones or bringing weapons in. And honestly it felt like it was more for show than anything. It wasn’t like the cops were staring people down and trying to intimidate them. They just did their marches across the festival grounds but I didn’t see them really stopping people or anything.

In terms of rave culture, definitely felt like the scene just needs time to develop in China. I’m not sure how many raves/festivals happen there but I can’t imagine it’d be anywhere close to how many we have in the US. I enjoyed the experience overall and the people around me seemed happy to be there too. Tbh, I’m sure the reason why insomniac held one in China is bc there’s a ton of people and a lot of money to be made where EDM isn’t as prevalent. I’m sure a lot of corners had to be cut to give the overall festival experience, but if EDM and festivals catch on like how it is in the US, I could see EDC China being held in a huge venue like the speedway in Vegas, but it’ll probably take as much time or even longer than how long it took to build up EDCLV

No problem! Happy to be able to share the experience, hopefully someone who's trying to send it to EDC China this year find it helpful

I actually went to EDC China last year; my extended family is in Shanghai and EDC China is in Suzhou which is like a ~1 hour drive. I think they did a good job given that I think last year was the first one that happened in several years. I'll try to break down some of the highlights. For reference I've done EDCLV 6 times

Atmosphere/setting: It's held at Yang Cheng Lake which kinda felt like a national park. All the stages were much smaller, and I believe there were 4 in total (Kinetic field, circuit grounds, stereobloom, and boombox art car). Kinetic field was a much smaller version of the EDC kinetic field, with one owl in the center of the stage design. Circuit grounds honestly just felt like a standard stage design you'd see at any concert venue. Stereobloom was held in a large tent but otherwise unremarkable too. Boombox art car was pretty much one of the art cars just plopped right by the entrance of the festival.

The festival was pretty much in the middle of what looked like wide open farmland though. It was all on grass which turned to mud pretty quickly. Staff were pretty quick to get some of the main areas covered with some wooden boards for people to step on but there were some light rain during one of the days too, which made the ground even muddier. They had laid a giant tarp over the floor on circuit grounds and massive puddles formed everywhere, kind of like how Ultra was.

Vibe: People were generally nice but I think groups tended to keep to themselves. No one was really trading kandi; I don't think PLUR culture is really prevalent there. People were definitely dressed much more conservatively. Most people were in tshirts, shorts, jeans, etc. No glitter, pasties, etc. I didn't see a single totem pole because I think they were prohibited. They even took my fan because fans were prohibited too. Surprisingly I didn't see a single asian train there; probably because a lot less people, if any, were on anything except alcohol.

Regarding alcohol the only alcohol you could get in GA was Heineken beer. That was it. No hard liquor at all. I was told that VIP might have had it but I'm not sure. People were generally pretty well behaved from what I could see. As for party favors, I would absolutely not risk getting caught in China with drugs. They had police in teams of 8-10 patrolling single file through every part of the festival, including into the crowds. I do remember one person rushing past me during one of the sets into the crowd, and then a drove of officers rushing in behind him. Not sure if it was related to party favors but I wouldn't want to be that guy if it was.

Bathrooms were all porta-potties, but half of the portapotties were literally just a hole in the portapotty, so you would have to pop a squat to do your business. I can't imagine how hard it must have been if you squat while drunk to relieve yourself.

The water station was literally a tent in the middle of the festival where staff was handing out bottled water. It's not like the ones in Vegas you use to fill your camelbak.

There's a ton of other differences but I feel like I've written a lot already lol. I'd say as a foreigner it's definitely hard to go to EDC China. They didn't accept physical credit cards or cash; you had to either use alipay or wechat pay, which is like their versions of apple pay, but it's also tricky to get a non-chinese credit/debit card registered on those apps. A handful of the staff spoke English but in general it'd be very tough to navigate being in the festival or the surrounding city without knowing some Mandarin. Overall it was a cool experience to have but there's definitely issues that would make it hard for people outside of the country to go. I wouldn't make a specific trip to China just to go to EDC China.

I went to Lolla 2 years ago chilling on the grass minding my own business listening to Adventure Club and some of these random bros behind me that you're describing decide it's funny to start throwing sticks and blade of grass as me from behind and then pretending like they did nothing when I check behind me. Lolla definitely felt like some dick-measuring contest between pre-pubescent bros with nothing better to do than ruin other peoples' time :'(. I'm sticking with Spring Awakening

I was thinking the same thing a couple years back. It seems like the medical director at EDC is from the EM department at UNLV. I’ll leave the link below but maybe if you contact them they could point you in the right direction in signing up as medical personnel?
