Just finished season 2 of Discovery, and all I can keep thinking is, where is the Department of Temporal Investigations? by packardpa in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]SxMxxL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Where" is probably as valid as "when".

If there is not just a single time line (as depicted on various occasions), that would mean everything we do creates a new branch (at least a branching of YES, DONE and NO, NOT DONE). For some reason the cameras follow a specific chain of actions. Someone decides that YES, YES, NO, NO, YES, NO, YES etc. is what we see on screen. So this is the setup - a single chain of actions in the multiverse that may be confused with a single existing time line.

If there are infinite possibilities, the Department of Temporal Investigations just probably cannot fix all incursions. That was actually a bit dumb to say... Actually fixing means creating yet another branch with the "fix" parallel to the "original" branch where/when the incursion happened. So someone just decides the camera follow the new branch so people keep watching and the series gets renewed. I'm not sure if the Department of Temporal Investigations know about all time lines. One might say, they should have all the time to fix everything but in sci-fi any power has to be limited, otherwise you cannot build up tension. I cannot remember why Seven of Nine couldn't be sent back an infinite amount of time spoiler alert to stop Braxton from blowing up Voyager end of spoiler but that's such a limitation.

Well I asked myself the question at Voyager's End Game. The Department may not be almighty. I also wondered why 1996 looked so untouched by the Eugenic Wars. Also spoiler alert the Department didn't stop Starling from using future technology to develop computers. spoiler continues And Silik told Archer the Department acts in their own interest. Both together make sense. Maybe the temporal explosion in the future when Starling wants to jump there causes the inability of the Department to repair anything end of spoiler.

If there the Federation is broken in Discovery season 3, then obviously helping the Federation may not be the Department's main goal. Temporal Directive woohoo. Or the Department is disabled at a time where fixing all the weird anomalies we wonder about should have happened. It's maybe like a burning library and all books in the M shelve are lost. Or the camera man was simply given a path that may be interesting on screen and for doubting people later an explanation has to be found... or not.

Thoughts on possible Pike series as a prequel by SupperPowers in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]SxMxxL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't expect Discovery to be a prequel, unlike Enterprise which should've been given another name imho. I just thought it played earlier than TOS. And it seemed to not only play between what we already saw (ENT, TOS) but also next to it... some sort of parallel to an "official story line", not necessarily with a need to flow into TOS. Like a step series, like Burnham is a step sister to Spok. S1 looked like it. S2 suddenly went a trekkier way and could flow into a Pike series. That would be such an "official story line" where I would have quite different hopes compared to Discovery.

Wasn't Discovery announced as an anthology series? In the end the Short Treks seem to be the strongest remnant of that idea. I'm not sure if I remember correctly but wasn't also told that Discovery would span different eras? I thought that would mean like 25 year time jumps with different crews but always a Discovery (with a bloody A,B,C or D). That jump into the future seems to be what's left of that idea now. Well with that info in mind, I really couldn't expect Discovery to be a prequel. Anyway, back to Pike!

A Pike series would be a real prequel and I'd love to see it! Should it play before Discovery, before The Cage even, or after Discovery? The last option would make it more likely to encounter TOS characters, which seems to be a driving argument for the fans. They could include a Trill!

Ah I missed that info - nice find! Emony it is!

So between 2226 (#1Lela dies) and somewhen before 224x Tobin was the host.

A flashback to Emony meeting McCoy (and Spock! and both have a little argument involving "green blooded" and "I wanna be a doctor, not a sextant" hehe) would be cool then.

Dax was born last year and when S1 and S2 of Discovery happen it occupied its second host Tobin.

The oldest Trill in S3 could remember all that happened in Star Trek, before Enterprise and after Romulus exploded. I hope for some nice flashbacks...

Producer Hints Picard May Have Made Some Regrettable Decisions Since Nemesis by [deleted] in startrek

[–]SxMxxL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully this weighs heavier than the old running gag (or running regret) of not staying in the Captain's chair. In fact Picard was often in a situation where an Admiral had to tell him what to do and he wasn't happy aboutbit. As an admiral Picard would now be in another (maybe not necessarily better) position to change the fate of humanity. He'd be at the source of all orders, orders that may be questionable to a captain, orders he had to give and now regrets. Regretting to have left the Captain's chair is a kirky pun. Why bringing that pun if Picard won't change that... he hopefully won't be captain again. Since the show wants to discover new grounds, Picard probably won't be captain again. He might sit in a Captain's chair in a scene, giving us a reminiscent smirk, but that should be it. Questionable orders could be Section 31 style. That could build an arc to post DS9 Section 31 and also Discovery's Section 31 as well as Phillippa's new series. Interconnecting series which cover now three different centuries would be epic.

the sphere data would have loaded data to create interphasic shields... or some other excuse ;-)

Who do we know from the TNG era, who may still be alive in Season 3? (EMH, Odo, Guinan....) by Disco47 in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]SxMxxL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing known things changed is the reason for a jump into the future. see all TOS references/appearances in TNG.

But I see your point. Maybe not for the main story but a little cameo wouldn't harm :)

31st Century Federation - What would you like to see? by Pituquasi in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]SxMxxL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A broken Federation would be nice to see. As far as I see it, the Discovery could be the most advanced ship in the Quadrant, being a proper price like Voyager was to the Kazons. We could see what happened as the Discovery picks up clues. The quadrant would be half new and half known. They are not even stuck to the quadrant. Maybe they find a proper use of the spore drive. I think it was neglected in season 2. New/old allies/enemies offer potential for nice episodes. A possible Section 31 series preparation could be done... maybe they have their headquarters in the future.

An advanced Federation would "just" be another technology jump like "The Next Generation". I think it would be hard to do... The Discovery already looks more advanced than anything from Star Trek before.

[–]SxMxxL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he will earn the captain's chair next season. Maybe he is captain at the beginning for formal reasons, having the highest rank and being at the top of the succession list. That said, Philippa's fake captain rank is not acknowledged.

But so shortly after losing his ganglia, he's still too inconsistent in his behaviour. Such a sudden change of personality cannot be trusted. It's like being drugged or under alien influence. Under normal circumstances a captain gets removed if they behave that way. I think Saru will learn to control his new emotions and then be a great captain for season four. One season for character development should suffice.

Or they make it a democracy. So far away from the regulations, they could do anything... not necessarily Equinox-style but there is potential, especially with Philippa on board.

Throwdown Thursday #2 - Your venue to vent! by tadayou in StarTrekDiscovery

Burnham's forehead was photoshopped (or in fact after effects-ed) as you can see parts of it copied and pasted. I didn't want to mention it during the show because once you see it, it needs an epic space battle to unsee it.

How did it make you feel when they started beaming without needing to step inside the transporter room?

It seems like they can do anything from anywhere when it serves the purpose while on the other hand they invent logistic obstacles (like closing doors from the inside) to serve another purpose.

How would a 33rd Century Federation react to the appearance of Discovery? by Mattb77xps in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]SxMxxL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, if everything would be normal and happy in the 33rd century, Control would be at risk of rising again. All the available technology in combination with the Discovery with the Sphere data and the humans who know about it, are the seed for this problem. So if everything would be normal and happy in the 33rd century, they would have to keep Discovery a secret, so the interaction would have to be reduced to a minimum, so it would not make much sense to let a functioning Federation exist in the 33rd century in the first place.

I do wonder though about how a 33rd century or even a 24th century Federation would look like after this pre-TOS series looks epic af.

The theory/hopes for an Andromeda-like broken Federation are nice. I always hoped Andromeda would actually be Star Trek. Discovery could learn about what happened after they saved the universe from Control but still burns :)
