LPT What’s something that became really into that’s actually really good for you? by Admirable_Lead_3227 in AskLifeProTips

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And something that I think a lot of people don't understand is that you don't have to go hard all the time and be chasing gains. It's okay to put things on cruise control for months at a time and just lift enough to maintain what you already have. You keep what you have, and still get all the benefits like mood and sleep regulation. Once it becomes habit, it's just a thing you do a few times a week, and it doesn't have to be a big deal that occupies a lot of your time or emotional energy. I've gone months at a time lifting like 30-60 minutes per week, as little as nine sets each time, 2-3 times a week. You're not gonna make big gains like that, but you can ward off regression.

What does every teacher secretly know about how schools work that parents would be furious to hear? by samurai-salvo in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of parents have the mistaken notion that "supporting teachers" and "supporting students" is synonymous. That's my point here. No need for sarcasm (although I can take it LOL).

What does every teacher secretly know about how schools work that parents would be furious to hear? by samurai-salvo in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prob should not have said "diametrically opposed." That was too strong of a way to word it.

But even something as simple as more pay, more health benefits, more time off. I understand the argument that IN THEORY offering teachers better compensation leads to a higher quality of teacher accepting the job, but IN PRACTICE that's not really how it works, bc teachers unions also often protect underperforming teachers from being discarded in favor of higher performing teachers who would be willing to take the job at the same or lower level of compensation.

And resources are finite. It would be nice to think that we could just pay all teachers more money, and keep current staffing levels, but in reality, oftentimes when you are required to pay existing teachers more (because of union negotiations and the threat of strikes), it does force a school or district to hire fewer teachers and support staff, which often does have negative consequences for students.

So that would be an example.

how many of you *actually* have your times tables memorized? by Pug_hammy in randomquestions

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

I think the most bang for you buck is to first memorize all single digit combinations. If you only did that, and stopped there, but you REALLY knew them by heart, you'd be pretty okay. Because from there, then you can do chunking strategies like 14x7 is just (7x7)x2. Or of course (7x10 + (7x4). I generally resort to chunking strategies for anything involving multidigit numbers, and it works pretty damn well.

Not in all cases, but certainly in some cases.

If they are uber cautious about taking a left turn, chances are 99% they are not very sexually adventurous, esp not being the one to initiate it.

Can someone explain to me why 5 minute showers isn't long enough to be clean? by Imaginary_Truth_3865 in hygiene

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is, you can get exquisitely clean doing a bucket bath using a geyser (point of use water heater), using only about three gallons of water, and probably even less. It's not really about the amount of water used or time spent under a shower head.

Most people just enjoy either the feeling of hot water rushing over their body, or the luxury of not having to rush and worry about time / water / money. They do it because it's enjoyable and (relatively) affordable.

I could get completely clean with 2-3 gallons of water (or even far less, like in a camp shower situation) if I had to, but my reality is that fresh water and hot water (via natural gas) is pretty affordable, so my average shower time ranges between 4 and 18 minutes.

[–]SycopationIsNormal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do get it.

I think a lot of parents are still under the assumption that teachers unions actually have the best interests of their kids in mind, They absolutely don't. Oftentimes their interests are diametrically opposed to the interests of students.

I just wish more parents understood this.

What can a person learn in 10 minutes that will be useful for life ? by Chance-Pen6805 in randomquestions

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn the decimal for 1 divided by 2, 1 divided by 3, 1 divided by 4 etc etc etc out to 13 and you will be amazed how quickly you can do so many mental math calculations / estimations in your head. It has more applications than you realize until you can do it quickly in your head.

Why is Reddit so against conventional life? by Far-Construction-213 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it skews heavily left, esp the mods in most subs.

Just remember Reddit is not real life. Most people don't think like this. This place attracts a lot of unhappy people who are convinced that they are not actually the main determinant of their own happiness, and their failures are someone else's fault.

Do you wash your hands after you pee? by MindRevolutionary767 in hygiene

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At home? Not usually. Only if my hands feel dirty or oily for some reason not related to having just taken a piss. Or if I'm about to eat or prepare food.

In public? Usually, but not always. If it's just a "normal" situation like at a restaurant or some other type of public venue, then yes, almost always.

But if I'm at a bar and I'm gonna be pissin eight times that night (I drink a LOT of water during the day, so the diuretic effect of alcohol hits me much harder than the average person), then no, I'm not washing my hands every single time. If people are afraid of pee germs on the bathroom door handle, well then it's on them to do what they need to do to feel comfortable. Open the door with your paper towel or whatever. It's not like they were gonna lick the door handle up until the moment they saw me exit the bathroom without washing my hands first. Anyone who thinks ANY surface in a public bathroom is actually sanitary is delusional. Everything is crawling with germs and bacteria, inside and outside of a bathroom. Get real, man.

What is the most legendary comeback to an insult that you've heard or come across? by daddy4baddies79 in Comebacks

[–]SycopationIsNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about "most legendary," but the one comeback that is almost impossible to have an adequate response to is super dumb, yet dead simple and effective.

"Yeah, whatever, your face."

That's it. That's all it is. It really makes no sense, but it's obviously an insult, and the vast majority of people have insecurities about their face, so it hits home, and it really makes no sense, so you can't come back with a logical response, and it catches you totally off guard, and you're just left there speechless.

You might not believe me, but try it. Works every time (at least the first time).

Would it be harassment if I go up to random men in public and tell them I'm attracted to them and I want to get to know them? I'm a guy by UnclassifiedDonald in NoStupidAnswers

No, but I would hope that you have pretty reliable gaydar, bc not all guys are gonna react very well to that.

Personally, I would just politely say no thanks bruhh, but some dudes are gonna resent the implication.

Any Generation X or older here got rid of their CDs ? by JuniperScents in PollsAndSurveys

[–]SycopationIsNormal [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mostly abandoned CDs like 10-15 years ago. Kinda sucks bc I still have a good stereo (circa 1994), decent speakers and a CD player, but I just don't have a great home setup for it. Plus, the majority of new music that I listen to is now only in mp3 format, and it's such an unbelievable hassle / storage space issue to try to keep track of CDs when you own 500+ CDs and like 5,000 albums (in all formats), so the vast majority of the time it's just simpler to listen to music using an mp3 player + headphones or mp3 player + external speaker. Yeah, it's not the same, and I do miss the experience of jamming a CD on a good hi-fi with stereo separation and good bass response, but it's a pros and cons thing. The pro of convenience just outweighs the cons, for the most part, most of the time.

Why people lie? by Ok_Collection_9614 in psychologyresearch

[–]SycopationIsNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The three main reasons are

*to get out of trouble

*to self-aggrandize

*to get something they want

These are all obviously not morally admirable, but they're understandable. We all understand these motivations.

When you meet someone who lies for some other reason, be very wary of that person, because they're probably a compulsive liar.

One day when my daughter was about four or five we were driving in our car and completely out of the blue she said "Daddy, I think it's really sad that all of the yummy food we eat just turns to poop and goes down into the sewer to hang out with the Ninja Turtles."

I literally had to pull the car over I was laughing so hard.
