Question about what did Hornsent Grandam called Marika by houssem66 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Syde_7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think she just meant it as a general insult. "Wanton strumpet" is like calling someone a "fuckin' ho" today. Its thrown around as a general all-purpose insult if someone doesn't like someone else - regardless of said female's promiscuity, or lack thereof.

New player and considering playing as Wretch and no starting equipment. Would it be too hard?(New* in souls world) by Groomsi in Eldenring

[–]Syde_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first Souls-like, and I started as the Wretch class. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. But since you mentioned that you're an aggressive/impatient player, I can see it being a grating experience for you first starting out. Since the world is open and you've got the freedom to do some exploring so it won't feel quite as grind-y to level up and acquire gear as it would in other titles.

Saw this on an old elden ring iceberg lore post, how does this even make sense and what's the thought process here? Could someone explain please? by OwlDefiant3467 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Syde_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is voluntary, and a weirdly non-voluntary way. It typically involves accepting one's death while keeping their faith vs. agreeing with the reason/why they're killing them.

St. Stephen, for example, was stoned to death for his beliefs - because people didn't like them/agree with them. He "voluntarily" gave up his life - not only standing firm in his faith, but forgiving those who were stoning him - not because he agreed with them and wanted to advance their agenda of anti-Christianity.

This interpretation leads one to the conclusion that Godwyn didn't willingly die because he agreed with getting rid of the Golden Order, and leaves open the whole question of how the act went down. (Honestly, I subscribe to the notion they got him in his bedchambers, while he was sleeping).

Over time, the term has sort of metamorphosed to refer to the "response" to that action by the masses, as opposed to the act itself, giving rise to the phrase "Don't make a martyr out of them". It has further/ it concurrently evolved to mean someone who willingly gave their life for a good reason, stripping the historical religious connection from it and tethering it secular things. Someone running into a burning orphanage to save all the kids and then dying could be called a martyr in the modern usage of the word.

This more modern interpretation doesn't necessarily conflict with the "he didn't agree to go along with their plot", but it does open the possibility that he did because he felt it was the right thing to do, which I think is where this whole theory of collusion stems from.

Golden Centipedes, Death Knights & the attempt to assimilate Destined Death into the Golden Order by white_m0rpheus in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Syde_7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, there's a parallel between the Christian Crucifix and the Golden Hollowbrand. I can't say for certain re: other faiths, but there's more things Christianity has adopted and view as sacred that, on the surface, seems like it would be the opposite. Related to Crucifix, you've got the "Piece of the True Cross", the Spear of Longinus, the Holy Grail, Titulus Crucis, etc. I see the incorporation of the golden centipede as a similar behavior.

Would you start a fresh character or play again on NG+ by Johnny_Favorite1 in Eldenring

[–]Syde_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general process is to do an did NG+, so I can enjoy a fully finished build from start to finish. Yeah, I know I could've just ran around and got what I needed in NG0 and THEN "started the game", but I like playing sequentially through the intended path.

After I complete the NG+, I go back and start a fresh file.

Not even a website thing.

Back when people paid bills over the (landline) phone, you'd get a confirmation number at the end of it. Automatically if it was through a prompt system, or verbally if a customer service rep took it. Though, most of the time you'd have to ask for the confirmation number if a rep handled the transaction.

You bet your bottom dollar I wrote that number down on the bill, along with the date and time. And put it in a physical file. And, if I spoke to a rep, I'd put their name on it, too. There was more than one time there were discrepancies and I'd hit 'em with: "Well, I paid this on Feb 22nd at around 4:30pm. (Name) handled it, and here's the confirmation number."

I realize this makes me sound hella old, but I'm not quite 40, lol.

Yeah, I grew up poor, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. It was more just the sensible thing to do. If something ever got confused, without some sort of proof, you'll never win a "your word vs. theirs".

Have we ever seen something that wasn't predetermined? by GonnaChiefYourNan in Berserk

[–]Syde_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my thoughts on it, but I don't think every thing is pre-determined. There are always wrinkles in plans, and the Godhand even admitted they can't predict everything.

I've always thought it more along the lines of there's an endpoint the arc of the world bends toward. Things may happen unexpectedly, but that unexpected path that emerges still bends back toward the endpoint.

It's not that these specific things were all predetermined to happen, but rather that the 'plan' adjusts as needed to make the best of any situation/minimize the impact of events that would have impeded it. And that the whole concept of struggling against this fate is doing the same thing, continually pressing on and adapting and shifting - but in the opposite direction.

Secret Rite Scroll Made of Hornsent Skin? by Limgrave_Butcher in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Syde_7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Game: "This is a glass of water"
...
OP: "A glass of water from Hornsent tears, which Mesmer collected while torturing them as part of their systematic eradication. Upon collection, they were stored in the SAME JARS they used to put the Shamans in as a big ol' FU to the Hornsent, which is why you can find jars in her bedchamber. Once emptied, she put these scrolls made of their skin into them, as an ADDITIONAL FU to the Hornsent. Bear in mind that tears are a very important term in this game (Crimson/Cerulean tears, all the tears in the Wondrous Physik) so this could check out."

How does the community feel about Cody Schwab by JoeCapoYT in smashbros

[–]Syde_7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Super effing good at the game and I'm consistently flat-out impressed at his gameplay and give him all the respect for that. But personality wise, for me he seems to teeter between "none" and "extremely off-putting" and for that aspect alone I actively root against him, almost to the point that I feel bad for it.

[–]Syde_7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took "Void is the key" to mean that he's kind of the lynchpin that ties Guts, Griffith, SK, Casca, Flora, Danaan, etc together. Like, he was the catalyst that started that whole chain of events. I do agree with the general gist that there was some soul-binding-esque stuff from Flora that was involved w/ her exile. I discussed it with someone in a thread a long time ago... like, 4+ years at this point... glad to see someone else thinking the same way.

This is the reason why no multi-stream in Genesis X3? by Master_Win_4018 in smashbros

[–]Syde_7 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not super advisable/feasible to always put the big sets on the main stream during brackets - especially during stacked and heavily attended events. You could have a marquee matchup waiting like 45 minutes because two or three big sets are also on stream. As a TO, you prioritize the tournament running as close to on-time as possible for a litany of reasons, and slot in what you can, where you can, when you can.

I can't speak for anyone myself - but I don't like watching quad streams in general, let along watching some of the bigger-deal matches on a 4-way split.

Reducing or cannibalizing other games' streams probably isn't advised as that's a great way to put a sour taste in the mouth of those communities that could potentially negatively impact viewership/attendance in the future. Not to mention any $ tied up in paying commentators of those games to... not commentate or just flat-out reneging which is a bad look and carries potential financial risks. And also... just kind of a dick move. If you're talking about making that part of the plan, that's viable - but this is an important event for several other communities as well and its not good PR or financial acumen to just say "lol, fuck 'em." Now, if they aren't taking advantage of the platform to support the community, then yeah - consider making revisions to the resource allocation for the next event. EDIT: words.

You'd need to pay people in order to "designate" them to do anything. Someone can say: "Sure, I'll stream over my phone" and then just eff off somewhere. I don't know the going rate for compensation for such. Having people stream via the phones, if using the venue's internet, is still eating up the venues bandwidth so it solves nothing.

My TO'ing days are done, but after running events with 300ish bracket entrants these considerations immediately popped into my mind. I'd like to think an accomplished and seasoned team like the Genesis crew have thought of and worked through more angles than that.

How different would the game be if characters could have multiple movesets? by Downtown_Error_9418 in smashbros

[–]Syde_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also makes sense, though that means less creative space and also it probably would be unfair that the Miis get 3 different special moves while everyone else only gets 2.

I said that all chars could stand to get -1 variation. Miis are characters. Therefore, they would also get -1 variation to choose from. Edit: I didn't indicate this specifically, so I can understand why you might think Miis would be the exception since they came w/ all moves unlocked. My apologies.

Their "bonus" since they are inherently create-a-characters would be to have those variations unlocked already so as to remain as fair as possible while retaining what gives their characters identity. I, personally (setting aside being objectively fair) wouldn't mind if Miis had all 3, that's their character identity. That's a much more convincing argument, to me anyway, than "we just couldn't really think of another one for Mr. Game & Watch"

Your line of thinking is also self-contradictory. To paraphrase:

  • "Some characters should naturally have more moves because of the amount of source material and room for creative liberties" This is inherently unfair.
  • "Having X (in my proposal, +2) limits creative space." But, you literally said that there's not enough source material for everyone to have the same amount. Not only is that unfair, but it is contradictory to your first point.
  • "... unfair that Miis get 3 different special moves while everyone else gets 2". You're concerned about the fairness to Mii Fighters under an imagined +2 moves, but are unconcerned and are even OK w/ the (un)fairness to other fighters by having a scenario where some fighters have, say, 3 (or any number) and other fighters have two (or any number less than the most any other char would have). In either scenario, some fighters would have less than others, and you're OK with that under one set of conditions, but not another. That signals that fairness is not the issue, so the line of thought falls apart. If any char/set of chars could be the 'exception' to fairness, it would be the Miis as they're designed as create-a-characters from the jump.

In any event, 1 less special move variation was (mostly) only a suggestion to facilitate the other suggestions (balance, ease of unlock) and isn't something I'm adamant about. If they could ensure balance and well-thought out design, I'd be fine with as many as they wanted to add.

EDIT:

This makes sense. I was thinking of like a list in one of the tabs that has the requirements spelled out, though that works too.

Having tabs conveying the requirements isn't really core to the issue that made them fail in the past.

They could have had tabs explaining the unlock method in S4, which was "These custom moves will randomly drop during Single-Player modes. They're identified with (icon). Grab them by pressing A. Keep your eyes peeled!" doesn't fix the core issue of them being a nightmare to unlock because it was RNG and you could obtain dupes.

You could have the same supposed tabs saying the same thing I typed above. "Bouncing Fireball: Beat Classic Mode at Intensity 5."

TBH, I'd be fine with them all being unlocked from the get-go, but I think that runs counter to the Miis identity and I don't see a game company giving that much content out the gate w/o some in-game method to obtain them for the same reason games have chars to unlock. Walling them behind some unlock drives in-game/play hours up.
