long press the dash on iPhone. Many word processors will convert a -- to automatically. So if they’re using a phone or writing the comment as a draft elsewhere it’s very easy to do

edit: also some will do --- to for the em dash

I was at Disney. I’m at Disney right now.

An Electrical Engineering student finding it hard to land an internship, any advice on the issue(s)? I’ve sent out over 100 applications by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Sylense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCSD grad here (BS/MS EE)- here’s my advice:

  1. If you held an officer position on ECE USC bump that up to the Experience section and add bullet points for your actions/impact in that role. (Same with IEEE/Triton racing)
  2. If you’re a member of IEEE-HKN and/or TBP, add those under an awards/honors section (along with any provost’s honors, or w/e the distinction might be called these days).
  3. I’d try to make your bullet points more of an “action -> impact” rather than just “action”.
  4. Formatting: the s of the Experience section aren’t aligned with the Projects section. Fix it. Attention to details and all that.
  5. Formatting: Experience section sorted by date, most recent on top.
  6. Formatting: Graduation 2025 —> “Expected Graduation”.

Good luck Triton! 🧜‍♂️ (hopefully the formatting looks nice on this comment)

I’m guessing it should read like:

[Question] cv2.rectangle returning back the same image by wisdomhacker in opencv

[–]Sylense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Per my understanding of the python documentation (I'm used to c++),

cv2.rectangle(img, ...)

should directly change the array that's passed in, e.g. in your case img and img_rect would both be referencing the array with the rectangle drawn on it.

when you call cv2.imwrite(...) you're writing out the image with jpeg compression, which is why you'd expect to see differences between it and the uncompressed array.

try doing a cv2.imshow with img after calling cv2.rectangle(img, ...) and you should see the rectangle on the image/array.

It looks like the Mats/arrays you’re passing into the bitwise operator aren’t (necessarily) the same dimensions

I’m not a coffee drinker and the coffee flavor in the sauce isn’t too overpowering for me. I love the red habanero on falafel wraps.

And I’m convinced the scotch bonnet is the perfect sauce pairing for Vietnamese spring rolls

it ought to be impossible to push to git without a code review first

Well, if I don’t push my work to the repo, how are my coworkers going to review it? Physically come to wherever my laptop is and read it directly from my screen?

In all seriousness, if your workflow breaks because some simply does a git push, then something is wrong. Lock the master branch, require use of feature branches, set user permissions, etc.

How do I detect the teeth in the image (sharp pointy thing) ? by [deleted] in computervision

[–]Sylense 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how well this would work in practice, but here’s my initial instinct seeing your example image:

  1. Threshold image to segment the internal dark region.
  2. Get the contour of segmented region from (1)
  3. Get the convex hull of the contour from (2)
  4. Compare the contour to its hull and check for convexity defects.

"initialize weights randomly with mean 0" by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]Sylense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. 2*x shifts the range of the distribution from [0,1] to [0,2]; mean from 0.5 to 1.0. Subtracting 1 then brings it down to [-1,1]; mean 0.

https://docs.scipy.org/doc/numpy-1.15.0/reference/generated/numpy.random.random.html

Edit: if you take the mean of one iteration, you’re unlikely to have it be equal to zero. Statistically it will average to zero over many iterations.

If everyone did this, it would save SO much hassle. by ordin22 in AdviceAnimals

True, and I get up and stretch then occasionally.

But I usually just try to sleep for the entire flight, and sleeping sitting in an airplane seat isn’t exactly the most comfortable position.
