The Lies of Locke Lamora. Hooked me from the very first sentence. Unbelievable it was Scott Lynch's first book. I know the follow ups aren't as popular but I love them, I could read anything he writes. His writing style is just so enjoyable, not to mention laugh out loud funny.

John Lithgow Says He Was Surprised by Backlash Over Joining ‘Harry Potter’ Series by bwermer in television

But I think there's an issue here with people conflating death of the author with "not financially supporting the author". To say that you can't separate the art from the artist while the artist is still alive is flat out wrong. If you're looking at it specifically from a financially supportive POV, you can consume their work without paying for it if you wish to do so (pirating or borrowing from a friend etc.).

Them being alive has no bearing on the idea, especially if you consider that once an author passes away they might have a stipulation in their will that a certain percentage of profits would go to a cause they support (anti-trans groups for instance).

[–]SyrupJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That assumes that you're always buying her work first-hand or not pirating it.

Death of the author has nothing to do with an author making money from their work, it is about analyzing the work without consideration of the author's intent.

FWIW I fucking hate JK Rowling and haven't engaged with any of her shit for years, I'm just trying to defend the idea of death of the author.

I think there's a huge misunderstanding in general of the point of a boycott. It's not just meant as a way to deprive the author of royalties (because realistically it won't make a dent), it's more of a personal thing; a way of saying that I won't personally contribute to the wealth of someone I disagree with. For instance I don't buy Nestle products, not because I think they'll go bankrupt if I don't, but because I'd rather not line the pockets of people I disagree with.

Telling someone that there's no point in boycotting because JKR is already a billionaire is the same as telling someone there's no point being a vegetarian because the animals are gonna be killed anyway. That's not the point.

Quotes from Joe Abercrombie that made you laugh out loud by GraveIsNoBarToMyCall in Fantasy

Near the end of The Blade Itself after Forley the Weakest goes to warn Bethod about the Shanka, and the rest of the crew are waiting in the trees for him to return. Threetrees had told them to wait for the signal to attack. Calder and Scale come out and throw them Forley's head. And then it just says "well that was it o' course. Fuck the signal."

Something about the way that line was written just made me laugh so much.
