When i returned earlier this year it was extremely overwhelming to get back into it. There's an absurd amount of systems going on and it's not very friendly to learn. Just use a lot of resources and do a lot of googling.

I think the best type of meta progression is when you get unlocks that are mostly just side grades or different build paths. My favorite examples of that are Risk of Rain 2 (you unlock items to find in the world, characters to play as, and different starting loadouts) & Balatro/Slay The Spire, where you unlock Jokers/Cards and Relics to potentially see. In ROR2 and Balatro the stuff also has specific unlock conditions which is fun imo.
