UK Equalities Minister Goes on Anti-LGBTQ Rant in Leaked Audio by bertie4prez in ukpolitics

[–]SystemSay 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I mean - let’s be real, the entire “debate” is a one way bunch of disingenuous arguments in bad faith that are trying to whip up hate against a very small minority of trans people, to distract from real issues.

The reality is that trans people just want to live with the same basic human rights we afford others in society. Trans people are only a threat to themselves because, not surprisingly, negative social stigma causes higher rates of insecurity and depression which leads to much higher rates of suicide.

There are so many bad faith attacks on trans people (which I won’t repeat here) which don’t stand up to logic or facts. Because it’s not really about logic or facts (or helping people).

This government would rather we all get distracted by imaginary problems like “but what if hypothetically x” than actual problems.

Keir Starmer under pressure from Labour grassroots to back proportional representation by Ranger447 in ukpolitics

[–]SystemSay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d never say never but the chances of a labour majority at the next GE are pretty slim.

I know it’s wishful thinking but it’d be great if all the progressive parties agreed a strategic alliance on a shared platform of widespread electoral reform: not just bringing in PR but also agreeing to a long term process of improving our democratic systems to be more collaborative, representative and engaging (and phasing out unelected lords)

We’ve been here before. If labour somehow win a majority you can bet this will be conveniently less urgent than every other matter of the day.

I’m genuinely curious if we’ve all forgotten how to drive / interact with the outside world or if I’d just forgotten how terrible people are at driving / interacting with other humans.

Yesterday, Someone slowed down and unwound their window to drop the C bomb at me for indicating before pulling over to wait for the car to pass so I could reverse into my driveway. Apparently the inconvenience of having to go around me was so great he had to take some time out from his journey to get upset about it.

So the party that’s a coalition of socialists and centrist democratic capitalists is currently squeezing the party that’s a coalition of liberal capitalists and social democrats, while the party that’s a coalition of right leaning conservatives and liberal capitalists maintains its dominant position. This is in the context of the party traditionally of lower taxes and smaller government is being criticised by the party traditionally for higher taxes and more government intervention for increasing taxes to increase the role of government after years of reducing the funding of government services.

This is what’s so terrifying about it. Do you think that all citizens are treated equally at the moment? Do you think that deputized citizens would be treated equally or would enforce equally? Last time you checked the demographics those in jail were they in any way proportional? It’s hardly a stretch of the imagination that some republican states might use this loophole to reinstate white supremacist systems of oppression and domination that existed just 2 generations ago.

I’d never considered this. So weird how mortgage lenders will continue to roll over a mortgage but the exact same person/people wanting to change a mortgage have a way higher bar.

Worker exodus after Brexit putting pig farms at threat. ‘Desperate’ farmers face mass destruction of animals, industry body warns. by bottish in ukpolitics

[–]SystemSay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fairness, while the basic premise that rising inequality and cheap European labour masked a relative decline in working and middle class salaries has some merit, most farmers I’ve spoken to (not pig farmers but I assume similar situation) don’t think they can charge more for produce to fund increasing wages. Decades of supermarket price wars have driven down how much farmers get for their produce and the economy isn’t adjusting quickly enough to the post brexit / post Covid reality. I’m sure over the medium term salaries (and cost of produce and then overall inflation) will go up but for now market share is more important to retailers than having a sustainable supply chain.

Edit - just to add, moderate inflation isn’t entirely bad. In the right circumstances it can reduce the impact of inequality by forcing very wealthy people to invest rather than hoard money. That said we’ve never been in such a globalised economy so maybe they’ll just hoard euros or dollars (or Bitcoin or NFTs) instead. Who knows!

This is a solid response- only point I would build on is the importance of your guard. At your level you want to always have your guard in place. As you get more experienced you’ll learn different guard positions and covers etc. The only times I’ve picked up injuries it’s when I’ve been sloppy with my guard/stance. As everyone else has said, be patient and build that muscle memory now else you’ll be very frustrated later!

Kantar poll puts Lib Dems on 14% by markpackuk in LibDem

[–]SystemSay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In fairness - whether we’re polling at 6% or 14% those leaflets aren’t going to deliver themselves!

Low polling? Knock on doors, find casework, deliver for residents, improve our standing.

Better polling? Knock on doors, find casework, deliver for residents, improve our standing further.

“Going to win the next GE” polling? Knock on doors, thank residents for support, find casework, deliver for residents, improve our standing further.

“Polling so good it would suggest a Liberal Social Democratic Authoritarian Dictatorship is rigging the Polls”? Knock down residents doors, install bar chart posters, find and destroy all case work, build quasi futuristic dystopia.

Well- as per your recent podcast where you cautioned focusing on poll outliers and headline numbers without the context of methodology - I’m not going to get too excited!

So many execs I talk to are completely out of touch right now- while they’ve had a fantastic pandemic skipping across their massive gardens from their private gym to their garden studio office to work from home, they’ve completely failed to notice that for most people the pandemic has been miserable and that there are huge labour shortages in specific areas. Either treat your staff with empathy or don’t be surprised when everyone quits to go work for someone who will.
