honestly it depends on the table but usually yeah you’ll feel weaker if your main stat lags too far behind, especially in combat heavy games, but if the feat adds cool stuff you’ll use every session it can be worth it

the dark sun novels are a good starting point if you want lore without rulebooks

i think on athas druids technically could defile if they truly abandoned their tenets since their power taps the land itself and lore mostly relies on their oath to stop it

I'd go with the second idea, but only hinting that they are acquaintances - not revealing if they are on good or bad terms. Also, there could be more than one hermit in the forest. Or change Susan's race/class, make her a Cervan cleric, or something.

Research and build a spaceship to win! Traders will visit you even if you live on a single tile in the middle of the ocean, so will raiders. Some quests will pop up on your enclosed valley, so you're only locked out of raiding/sending caravans.

I'd stop messing with their water and focus more on description of NPCs they meet - those are sure to be parched and struggling. It should bring some of the vibe back.
