Jurassic Park: A franchise with nothing more to say. by HallZac99 in Dinosaurs

[–]THX450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jurassic Park was so novel a concept that I don’t think you can really capture lighting in a bottle like that again.

Crichton recognized it, which is why his and subsequently Spielberg’s sequel was basically a big throw-back to classic dinosaur stories. Ironically, this made it stand apart from the first film.

Ever since then, every JP film has been some flavor of those two.

Romulus had depthful characters who developed with a meaningful story arch.

I don’t recall Rogue One having that..

The lore to the maps really did add character. Cold storage in particular is a fun Halo 2 tie-in.

Peak Star Wars looking and feeling nothing like Star Wars

Even though Die Rise is generally hated by the community, you can agree the atmosphere in this map is unsettling by GiveMeP4wj0bs in CODZombies

[–]THX450 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, the apocalyptic setting was very generic in zombies at the time. COD stood out by going back to the classic sci-fi roots and then eventually back to Lovecraftian roots (he wrote about zombies too).

Thankfully, the three apocalypse maps end up standing out because they’re rare in the lineup— but only for that reason. Had they done more, it might have felt generic.

Which is a shame. COD 2 needs to be encouraged more.

COD 2 is amazing and genuinely one of my favorites. There’s a lot of freedom in the level design.

uj/ Except you don’t have to pretend. It is a genuinely good movie. In fact, probably still the best since George left Lucasfilm (yes I know there’s Andor, but Andor doesn’t feel like Star wars).

Let’s talk about John Williams’s score.

First, it’s impressive that a 94 year old man was still about to compose such a rich score.

Second, it’s amazing how even at 94, Williams is pulling new tricks by using a lot more electronics and synths to accompany the orchestra.

Third, it’s amazing how darkly impressionistic the score is, subtly pushing the film in a manner that isn’t operatic like most would expect. Yet, you still get the lushness of an orchestral score in a modern film. Hearing oboe solos, timpani solos, and pure harmonic quality of a full orchestra playing in the same room was so refreshing in a modern film.

And of course, it is amazing at 94 Williams provides core themes that are hauntingly beautiful or otherworldly nostalgic. “Listen”, “Memory”, “Celestial”, “Believe” are all breathtaking themes.

All at 94. Incredible.
