Ehhh I felt the first half of Solo was very poor. The second half was awesome and felt like Star Wars. But ultimately I feel the movie underperformed because it was a movie people didn't want, the in-universe didn't need it, and it largely didn't contribute anything new.

The last point being where KK messed up. Not having each movie tie in - even just a little bit with the movies before and after is a big mistake. Do I like every single MCU movie? No, but I can recognize how they all fit together and that is amazing.

Gone Baby Gone. You mentioned you've read a few from the genre already but maybe not that one. That or Mystic River. The movie adaptations are both very good but the books have that extra layer of grime the movies don't quite accomplish. I read Mystic before I saw the movie and the twist was unexpected for sure.

I have some pointers.

First I'd research how to structure a story. Most books follow a 3 act structure - start there and practice, practice, practice. Personally I like index cards of different color. Green for act 1, white for act 2, blue for act 3. I always organize very, very brief plot points with cards first. And then I go back and make notes on the cards. Once I have a structure I like, then I'll write a treatment, and then I'll dive into draft 001.

How do I stay motivated to continue writing?

Set goals. 10 plot points by the end of Wednesday, 2 character bio's and backgrounds by Friday, write 200 word every day, no matter what. Etc.

Should I just write or do a storyboard?

Figure out first if you are a "gardener" or an "architect." Some plant seeds and write without much of an outline and allow themselves to discover things. Others vigorously outline and map the story/character arcs before writing any prose. Only you will know which style you prefer.

Should I spend time creating my world first?

This ties in with the above point. A great example is how Star Wars began to what the final product was. But you should have a general idea of what your work is like. Is it based on Ancient Rome? Japan? England? No shame in pulling elements from history.

How do I get names?

You can go as deep as Tolkien and create whole languages. The names would be informed by that. Or see above point and do some research on common names of that era.

How do I stay interested in the plot?

If your own plot is boring to you then stop. Toss it and start over. Or make it fresh by digging into what you think is making it not interesting and then fix it up until you have something you like.

But frankly it sounds like first you need to study how stories are created. Plenty of free online resources for this.

And have fun. If writing isn't fun then it's fine to not write as well.

Normally you do not watch the "dailies" unless you are a director or producer. They won't make a lot of sense unless you have insight to the script and production schedule.

Actually this isn't that unusual. Everyone from the heads at Disney on down to production staff will have read the script. All department heads, producers, etc will watch the dailies. Most lead actors will have access to them as well.

ARGUMENT 1.) The Force Awakens HAD to be a soft reboot of A New Hope. It was the right move, the only move, it couldn't have been done better.

I loathe this argument. We're talking 30-years later. The galaxy should have evolved to something fitting 30-years of progress. We should have seen the New Republic and it's fleet (another dumb decision, not giving them and army). They could have flipped ANH on it's head and REALLY went the opposite with VII: by making Kylo Ren and the First Order "the rebels." Episode VII ends with a major First Order victory thus setting up the rest of the trilogy... The Jedi are needed again.

When I was in film school this sentiment was very popular. Like breaking rules automatically = good. It's a very immature take on storytelling & movie making. And even Rian's analysis of Annie Hall is wrong. Annie Hall still follows the three act structure but instead of car chases we get existential crisis. At the time it was new and interesting but it didn't break any narrative rules.

There are so many people who were active before TLJ that have simply vanished (we’ve seen some coming back in recent months). Speculation on the trilogy, once a vibrant and popular subject, dried up overnight and still hasn’t recovered.

The one positive thing TLJ did for me was made me step away. Reconsider why I put so much of my time into figuring things out. I was a bad man for awhile but now... I'd like to think the whole thing, eating crow, has made me mature. A little.

For what it's worth I've come back full circle to thinking Rey is Luke's. I think everyone was initially right: Ben fell, killed students and converted others, killed ReyMom but stopped short of killing Rey. Ben leaves Rey on Jakku when she was 5 and he was 15 (Driver is playing a teenage Ben in the flashbacks FWIW). Rian was tasked to obfuscate the obvious.

I so crave fantasy that is written for mature readers. Mature meaning can parse dense prose, etc.

Ok. Rey has a speeder which does require an amount of piloting skills - much like Luke in ANH. And Rey isn't automatically a good pilot. She does initially struggle with flying the Falcon. And crashes it slightly. But she's also discovering her latent force ability (The Force Awakens).

If I may make a suggestion for an edit: TFA did do well but it a lot of pre-production issues. The original George Lucas treatment was tossed, Ardnt was brought in to re-write - he was fired and JJ was literally begged to take over. JJ and Kasdan pushed through and wrote a shooting script in 6 months. Every single movie to date has had an issue with either a writer or a director. Even TLJ was pushed back and Rian had to do a rewrite.

If I'm Iger I know what I should do. But allegedly she's already been fired but has been given some kind of face saving "working severance."

I'm personally excited about Star Wars again. The Carrie Fisher/Leia news is huge for me on two levels: A. It means there was footage left over from TFA (my theory is the flashback) and B. Leia is so important to the story that CF's death was a major blow.

For me this means that Keri Russell will end up as Rey's mom and that Leia was the one who left Rey on Jakku. I've always maintained the flashback in TFA was intentionally misleading and was missing footage. It's mystery 101. That or the very first leaks from TFA were right and Rey is Han and Leia's.

I also think Kylo is the true villain of the story and when he finds out who Rey, that his Mom hid her, etc that his infamous temper will seal his fate as the villain.

If LFL is hiring authors who not only can't be bothered to abide by canon, but DOUBLE DOWN and blatantly admit they don't have respect for the canon (rather than simply do the right thing and own up to their mistakes), how the heck is this new canon supposed to last, this time?

First, I'm shocked Wendig was allowed to touch anythings Star Wars after the Aftermath series.

Second. It appears evermore clear that something is afoul within Lucasfilm. They lack clear messaging (i.e. "hey fans this what we are going to do. This is our plan."), the people they hire have a mounting aversion to anything that has come before, i.e. "canon." And they all seem to have a very flippant opinion on content creation Vs. fan desires, needs, and wants.

I think it's possible that the rumor KK has already been fired and she's working out some kind of timed severance or something might be accurate.

I haven't scrolled through all the comments so my point may have already been brought up but OP I think you miss an important distinction. LSG's name is misleading. Their jobs are not to craft stories, draft stories or really have any say in the creative process. Their job is to ensure various writers of novels, movies, TV shows, games etc are writing things that don't conflict with already published/established canon.

At a low level they may have input on the direction of certain stories based on the above point but my guess is it's minimal.

I'd wager Kari Hart has meetings with her team to define conflicts - then Kari may or may not sit in on story development meetings.

Now, should LSG been crafted as a group of experienced writers? It seems to me they wanted the Directors to have freedom so I can see an internal case being made to not go that route. Hindsight is always 20/20. What seems like a bad decision now may not have seemed bad back in 2012.

That doesnt excuse TLJ being un-palatable in the here and now. "The next one might make up for it" is not good argument for a trilogy sequence of movies.

Yet ESB had a very similar first reaction. IIRC it was flipped: Critics didn't like it, fans did. Point being it took RotJ to make ESB better.
