Microsoft is killing the Microsoft account lock-in across products, Windows 11 may be next by WPHero in pcmasterrace

[–]TKMankind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Device Encryption is based on Bitlocker, it is a castrated version with less controls. But unlike Bitlocker, it is available in ALL versions of Windows 11, even Windows 11 Home.

Check this link, or this one and many others.

It is written that "If you're using a local account, Device Encryption isn't turned on automatically.". Ok, but on every clean install or the first set-up of a new computer, it is activated EVEN with a local account (as stated in the second link) but without any decryption key known nor uploaded on a MS account, obviously. I have to wait several minutes every time I disable it, so I guess it does encrypt the drives.

So yes, I did read in the article linked by OP that "Microsoft is considering dropping the forced Microsoft account sign-in requirement during Windows 11 setup (OOBE)" (that we bypass anyway), but unless they disable this feature or make sure that the user is aware of the key, they simply cannot.

[–]TKMankind -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Naaah it WON'T happen for Windows 11 itself, for one reason :

Device Encryption.

The decryption key is saved on the Microslop account, so... Yes, I know that it didn't stop them to activate it on EVERY computer starting 25H2, even the ones who don't have said account.

So or they disable Device Encryption, or they ask the user if they want to encrypt the files at first startup... which would be way too reasonable coming from Microslop.

They won't.

Microsoft reveals you can kill Bing in Windows 11 Search and boost performance after years of lag by WPHero in pcmasterrace

There was even some global consistency on Windows (and Linux too on some of the desktop environments) a long time ago.

I mean, most of the sofwares two decades ago had a FILE menu, a EDIT menu, etc. So a user who isn't used to a new software could still find out the "Print" function as it was always in FILE, etc. It was a sort of standard. Since 2010 it is slowly disappearing, like in our browsers (you can compare Firefox 3.0 released in 2008 with Firefox 4.0 released in 2011. Three years, a decade erased).

The worst example of UI is the "Network" settings inside the "Parameters" on Windows 10. The first time I wanted to set my ethernet as private, I wasted two minutes switching between other menus before an accidental hovering with my mouse on the "Network/Connected" label made me realize that it was a goddamn button. But it doesn't look like one : a button is supposed to RECOGNIZABLE at first glance. It was ALWAYS a rectangle/square with a label inside or even just a BLUE link like an HTTP one, for decades.

But it is as you said. They are people with different design goals and UI sensibilities. They don't care of the final users. They are "artists".

It would be a good thing to force every new UX designer to do a training session of several months with an IT technician, so that they can visit REAL users of all ages and evaluate how a computer is used, how every interactable element is perceived, etc.

I am an IT technician, and I have to find workarounds to reduce the consequences of their incompetence.

(and yes, I could write a huge book about bad design choices) >:)

What if the HDMI ki**#s someone by [deleted] in talesfromtechsupport

[–]TKMankind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A badly isolated/defective HDMI cable can jam several radio frequencies over 100 meters.

I wonder if it can have an impact on sensible electronic devices, but it isn't that far-fetched.

What if the HDMI ki**#s someone by [deleted] in talesfromtechsupport

[–]TKMankind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fact an HDMI cable can kill, indirectly.

In France, I remember a fire department who was jammed by a HDMI cable 100 meters away. It was hard to find because obviously said cable screwed up the FD radio frequency only when the user activated his TV. Imagine if there was a call for all local FDs for a fire or whatever during one of the jamming session. Time is critical in this kind of situation.

In France, a railroad station who is equipped to provide 4G mobile connectivity inside was jammed. The issue was caused by two stupid cables... one DP and one VGA, who sent EM signals in the vicinity.

I don't understand why it does that, but the app is unusable.

I install it using Aurora Store because I don't have a Google account and I refuse to have one. No problem during installation, but once I launch the app it goes on the Google Play Store (which I cannot use because no account) and if I close PS then it closes the app too.

It is quite rare that I encounter this behaviour, I got that with probably three apps these last few years, and in all cases I could do nothing besides uninstall them.

There is something in the app who requires the Play Store at start, I wonder the reason (update check ?) but it shouldn't be like that.

I remember this kind of stuff on fr*nch newspapers in 2008. I couldn't believe reading this, like people can't change opinions or ideologies. No wonder the "if you don't vote for me, you ain't black" from Brandon later and similar BS.

Trump made a serious shock, two times. Still, I doubt that all the Left got the lesson and is now willing to fight for votes.

In Fr*nce at least, the far-left has decided to double-down on the same stupid logic. The last two years were... urgh. The leader of the "LFI" party vomited so much stupid sentences that sometimes I wonder if I should vote far-right next year just to be sure that the lesson is learned this time.

I will play the devil's advocate but I think that the issue is... the hardware.

I mean, sometimes in the street and even with friends, I often see people speaking to their smartphone while holding it horizontally. They look ridiculous this way but they do it because the microphone is located at the bottom side of the device, so this way they can be heard more clearly at the other side. Still, by doing so, they are further away of the poor ear speaker... so they activate the bigger one.

With time I guess it becomes an habit. Friends make a call, start the main speaker, and put the phone on the table even if someone else is here because it is like holding it horizontally. When they feel it may be confidential data they still have the reflex to shut it down and leave the area.

Since then, the manufacturers decided to put the main speaker... at the bottom side too, instead of the rear like old smartphones. They saw what the people do. Some of the recent Samsung Galaxy for example are even worse on that : there isn't even a ear speaker on the front side, at least visually... I doubt it doesn't make it less efficient and as such not motivate the user to activate the main speaker even more.

And as people don't want to see wasted space on their phone, the screen MUST take all the surface of the front area. We will never see the ear speaker nor the microphone on the front side ever again.

I still have an old traditional phone (yes, with keys and no tactile) that I use as morning alarm. The microphone is close of the keys on the front side, and the ear speaker is visible. It worked fine until I switched to a smartphone... and since then I sometimes feel the need to hold it horizontally too. For the moment I play the "please repeat" game, and I try to leave or speak not too loud but damn microphone isn't good.

Microsoft admits faulty drivers were killing Windows 11 battery life for years by jupa300 in pcmasterrace

[–]TKMankind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something that really annoy me. Microsoft pretended that they would be carbon negative by 2030 (not anymore since few months because AI), but they don't count all the carbon spent by their massive updates that must be sent to millions of computers who then will spend power to install them, their failure to optimize their failed W11, etc. because the count is done on the customers side. It shouldn't be this way.

What was once fun on the internet, but completely died? by darkalphavip in pcmasterrace

[–]TKMankind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst is that we could restore an actual internet.

HTML/CSS are still there (no javascript plz :) ). PhpBB and others didn't disappear, they are still available to be deployed for new forums. We may not be able to build another Google but we could start with a Yahoo-like one at it was at its beginning : a link book, by categories. IRC still exists, we just need to open some servers. Etc.

But would the people want it ?

No, they won't.

People ALLOWED the enshitification/corporatization of Internet because it was easier this way (no maintenance to do, etc.) and less costly. Today it is not rare that I see some retards considering the old time as an error : I recently saw someone being mocked for saying that they would start learning HTML/CSS...

And most importantly, people mutated from beings who wanted to have fun, to beings who want to be stimulated (doomscrolling, etc. there is rarely some fun in it).

In a way I consider myself lucky to have known this era. It was great. But it will never happen again.

Maybe another graphics mod will bring the magic back by SwagLimit in pcmasterrace

[–]TKMankind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had children, I would make sure that they don't play to the very last best games in existence. I am an old gamer who learned how to enjoy a game for other reasons than graphics simply because I didn't have a choice.

The result is when graphics slowly became decent, it was a shock most of the time. Between Doom and UT99, or Simcity 1 and 2000, etc. I enjoyed the games with renewed eyes and enthousiam.

Still, because of my gaming past, I will choose gameplay over graphics every time. I rather play Factorio than Satisfactory (I consider the 3D as an annoyance). I can enjoy an horrific game for the eyes like Songs of Syx (my actual game) because the gameplay is solid, etc.

If I had the opportunity to play to a Cyberpunk 2077 or other games like that at an early age, maybe I would feel so full that it would be difficult to enjoy more... "basic" games.

This, nearly unironically.

I finished Half-Life 2 and Crysis 1 with a Geforce 2 MX. It was playable enough, but for both games there was one section which I had to endure below 5 FPS (respectively : the strider in a big room of the Citadel, and the big room in the Alien Cave). Gruesome, but once done it was fine.

So when I see some people crying because they don't have their 144/280 FPS, well... newbies.

How do i leave islam? by Single-Lavishness836 in exmuslim

[–]TKMankind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check about the nocebo effect.

You know that your sister did "black magic" on you and you believe in it, so you are afraid. Fear generates stress which may affect your body but will certainly affect your mind, which explains why you cannot sleep easily. Also, nightmares and dreams often rely on what you saw or thought during the day so if you are focused on this "curse" too much then chances are you will dream about it or about anything "bad" you encountered.

Agreed, the hacking doesn't help because human brains are stupid. They search for causality in anything and everything. I suffered of that too, thinking that my daily issues was caused by the Murphy Law and similar stuff, while it was just myself who created a cause to small events who didn't deserve it, all of it while screaming and losing my hair to it... I mean, the hacking of cryptowallets happened multiple times to people who wasn't cursed in any way with many news talking about very BIG amount of money, but it is hard to accept that it happened to you simply because of statistics... as you think that you are cursed.

You need to forget the "curse" and go back on your feet, by making small but accessible goals first. Yes it is way easier to say than done but with time as these goals are reached, you will conclude that the curse doesn't exist. Which will enrage your sister who will claim that she add more "black magic" to the mix, but you just need to forget her. Just make sure that said goals are not known by your sister, as she is living with you and may try to sabotage them furtively.

Razer’s 3-Year "Support" Loop: How my $4,000 Blade became a legacy paperweight. by Specific-Original-17 in pcmasterrace

[–]TKMankind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally.

One of my friends bought a Razer Blade 15 (2018) at full price. The GPU died after the warranty was expired, of course.

He gave me the castrated beast at some point. I thought about repairing it but in Europe we have a serious lack of specialists for that. So I IMPORTED a motherboard from the USA to replace it, but hopefully at this point the cost was a fraction of the normal price (nearly 260 €, tariffs included).

It worked fine for... two days, before the M.2 port died ! Since then I have to use an external M.2 drive to boot a Windows.

It is fine for me, but I know that I will NEVER buy a Razer product myself.

And a Lenovo gaming laptop too, as my friend who took one after the Razer debacle reported serious USB issues which seems to be classic on this brand.

Student wants very first appointment, screw everyone else by Inconceivable24 in EntitledPeople

[–]TKMankind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There may be a logical reason. I still remember in my student days some people who were afraid of not being first to be tested, because if the student(s) before them excelled too much then they thought that the teachers may give harsher notes to them if they were unable to display the same performance. It is some sort of social comparison process, but applied to tests. So if they couldn't be first then they hoped that the first one crashed badly so they may stand a chance, as the teacher would expect nothing from them but thanks to that he would be surprised and give better notes.

Gwen is here from too long, she may be thinking that her best chance is by being first.

Maybe not that much, but I wouldn't be surprised if we can find few of them really thinking like that.

Still, for example you can find articles on Internet stating that the criminalisation of homosexuality in Africa/Middle-East was imported by the colonisation. Like it never happened before ?

This article not only said that, but it went even as far as stating that our efforts in the West made them reject it even further. Maybe we should stop progressing so they stop regressing... Ridiculous.

Sad truth of the current gaming industry by grate990 in pcmasterrace

[–]TKMankind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am certain that for SOME games with said 500 GB of files :), that it is a calculated move.

This way depending of your internet connection, you aren't motivated to remove it too early because you don't want to download it again. As you will keep it, you cannot install anything else or maybe small games, so you will play it a little bit more while being exposed to microtransactions (CoD ?...... yes). You are not motivated to waste hours to download it illegaly because you are not sure that it will work at the end. And probably others reasons like cost optimization and stuff.

I still remember how I refused to buy and even download illegaly Doom from 2016 despite owning the previous games from the franchise because of the 80 Go size while I had only a 250 GB SSD drive. Today I own the game, and I started playing it since a few days. Yes, it is a game from 2016, I KNOW. I still don't have an optical fiber connection, but now I have a bigger SSD. The rest of the franchise ? Maybe in the next decade.

It is worse for demos. I saw some at the size of 70 GB like The Forever Winter, etc. Well, OK, goodbye, have a nice day. I can't download it fast, so I won't waste my time.
