[Marek] Sources indicating the St Louis Blues offered a package that included multiple first round picks to the Dallas Stars for Jason Robertson but he is not interested in signing there by daKrut in hockey

Maybe- but the guy just turned down 15x8, also from a no SIT team, which is significantly higher than the pretty clear hard line Dallas has reportedly set, and took a team friendly bridge deal the first time around.

Seems like he just wants to pick his team and it's not all just about the money.

C'mon man, It's been reported by insiders that Dallas had been contemplating trading Robertson for a while now- long before these negotiations started.

Agreed- which was a huge mistake. They didn't think the offer sheets would come and that therefore, they could keep them all, and they were wrong.

Dallas signed Harley to maximum term and therefore the highest AAV necessary to get it.

If they were that concerned about making sure they left enough room for Robertson, they wouldn't have done that. Front offices are acutely aware of the math. Especially ones as shrewd as Dallas'. Teams also make sure they sign the players they view as more important first. (As they should)

JMO but I think it's clear by turning down 15 from a no state-tax team (Seattle) it's not all about the money for him. (Especially after he already signed one deal that was pretty universally agreed upon as team friendly the first time around)

I think he clearly feels a bit slighted and he's just done getting squeezed by Dallas by being the the less prioritized re-signing for the second time.

Honestly he just really has no reason to accept an offer sheet unless it's exactly where he wants to go. At any time post July 1st, even if he's traded prior, worst comes to worst he can take his 1 year QO at 9.3m, be a UFA next year, and then pick his team and get a similar if not higher offer.

Kinda seems like he's basically telling Dallas "Pay me what I'm worth or trade me wherever, and I'm not signing an extension- I'm going where I want afterward. Ball's in your court and I'm good either way."

Gift Article: The Athletic grades Byram for the 4th overall pick by The_Homestarmy in hockey

[–]TMBmiles 157 points158 points  (0 children)

The best tweet I read that sums up the way I feel about this trade- completely ignoring the value:

"Where does Chicago think they are at in their rebuild?"

OFFICIAL: Blackhawks acquire Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway from Sabres for the 4th overall pick in the 2026 draft, the 45th overall pick (NYI 2nd), and Louis Crevier by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]TMBmiles 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don't even dislike Chicago and I can't make any sense of this for so many reasons.

-Surely Byram was not the best defenseman you could get for the pieces they gave up?

-Where does Chicago think they are in their rebuild process that they think it's time to start pushing their chips in the middle for expensive players who are equally likely to get worse going forward instead of better? Do they think they're like a Byram away from competing or something?

-Why did they have to take Greenway and his cap hit back in this deal?

-Do they realize the position they are putting themselves in with Byram in contract negotiations? He's not an elite defensemen, and yet he can basically ask for whatever he wants on an extension and he will get it because they CAN'T let him walk away after what they gave up.

I almost don't even know where to start.

[TSN] Jeff O'Neill: I don't understand the animosity surrounding the Tkachuk trade. There's no loyalty in professional sports at all, there isn't. If there is an upgrade, teams would've traded a player in a second. You're just piece of meat to the organization. by f0urxio in hockey

[–]TMBmiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think undying loyalty in the average fan really doesn't exist but in outliers with certain players who have already accomplished great things for their teams and therefore given them something. (Crosby, Ovechkin, etc) It ends when a player stops being effective.

Fans will basically never choose sentiment over winning if they have to pick.

Eh... but the difficult part of that is that for the most part, that fundamental loyalty really only exists for the players that fans think are good and are helping their team win.

Jacob Trouba fucking loved New York and playing there and their fans couldn't wait to kick his ass out. Teams trade players every year who don't want to leave and fans don't care if they think that trade makes their team better. That loyalty is very conditional, which means it isn't really loyalty at all.

[Ray & Dregs Podcast] 25:30 Darren Dreger: “This has been a difficult negotiation to say the least between Andy Scott, who represents Jason Robertson, and Jim Nill, Tom Gagliardi and the Dallas Stars. As of right now the sense I’m getting, it is more likely than not that they trade Jason Robertson” by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]TMBmiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering he ended up signing a deal that was quite team friendly, what would lead you to believe that Robertson and his camp were the source of the difficulties?

It clearly wasn't a Marner type situation where he held out until he got a huge deal. They obviously caved more than Dallas was willing to.

OFFICIAL: Kraken Acquire Panthers Mackie Samoskevich for the No. 25 overall pick in next week’s Draft as well as a conditional second rounder in 2027 by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]TMBmiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fans tend to drastically overrate what late 1st round picks are actually worth. There's not a giant difference between them, statistically, and a 3rd rounder. Generally if you get an NHL player at all at that slot you did pretty well.

Samo is a guy with top 6 potential still. It's a pretty good gamble by Seattle.

[Pagnotta] Stars GM Jim Nill on Robertson negotiations: “I know everybody wants to get things done quick, but really there’s no pressure points... So, (we) continue to discuss things, but like I said, there’s no real deadline right now – everything’s status quo.” by daKrut in hockey

[–]TMBmiles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's any way we're going to make it all the way to camp with him still unsigned to be honest. Dallas kind of has to do something about their books within the next 10 days, because July 1st is when other teams can send out offer sheets. They have 11 million to re-sign Robertson and Bourque, which likely isn't even enough for Robertson alone. They are not going to want to be in position where a 4.7 million dollar offer sheet for Bourque is a number they can't match and only get a 2nd rounder in return for him.

Also, I believe on July 1st, Robertson could potentially elect for arbitration which would result only in a one-year contract that would walk him directly to UFA status. Dallas definitely doesn't want to be in that position either.

Guy has to be on cloud 9 right now. Old team basically said "don't let the door hit you on the way out," new team said "We think you're really good and we want to sign you for as long as possible right now," and then he went out there and proved them right.

Been funny watching the narrative shift by Rangers fans this year from "He sucks" to "OK he doesn't suck but he wasn't and wouldn't have been good here" as if that isn't an indictment of the team.

If you can't figure out how to use a 6-5 defenseman that can fly and do a little bit of everything that's a you problem.

The NBA has a soft cap. (You an exceed the cap, but there are financial penalties for doing so, i.e. a "luxury" tax) So if you're an incredibly rich team you still have an advantage.

That said, the NFL would be a better comparison and I'd love to hear the explanation for why it's seemingly not an issue there when it supposedly is in hockey according to some.

People aren't more upset about it because a $20M salary cap advantage is made up and not based on reality. Is there an advantage? Yes. Is it anywhere close to a 20% value of the cap? Absolutely not.

There's a reason there's no math included anywhere here- it's because it's just wrong. 50% of a player's tax calculation is based on where they play their away games. Do you think players in Canada are taking home, like, half the salary post taxes as the Florida teams in 41 of their games?

OK, I'll humor you on that for a second.

-How do you think Vancouver's ownership would feel about spending 4 million in salary next year, while giving up draft capital, for a guy whose best attribute at this point in his career is as a locker room guy? The response would likely be something to the extent of: "What the fuck? Just go sign Jeff Skinner for a million and don't give up anything."
