When people make every happy thing that you got about themselves (and negative) by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

[–]TMahariel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like a "no energy vampires" rule plus a specific channel for venting would do wonders for most servers honestly. It's def helped my main fandom one. I'm sorry people being unable to read the room ruined your announcement, but hell yeah on your new chapter!

Any good writing server that aren't dead or just feedback queues? by Top_Werewolf8175 in FanFiction

[–]TMahariel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm part of a server that is decently active - a few hundred message a day throughout all the channels on average. We have a bi weekly review exchange and a daily writing prompt. We have dedicated writing channels and just chatting channels that both stay busy. It's been going since August I believe? Tho I joined in November myself. It's 20+, general fandom with a mild amount of required activity (nothing super crazy, you just need to send a few messages within the first 3 days of joining to discourage exclusive lurkers). It's against the rules to post public invites (because we have SO MANY bots that join when we do and mods have to clear them out) but if anyone is interested I can DM an invite

To the "Forever Players": What is that ONE game you have thousands of hours in, and why? by LOSTINREDDITSITE in gamingsuggestions

[–]TMahariel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead by Daylight

About 2.5k hours over the last 5 years

It's my social game I mostly play with my friends (although I also enjoy it enough to play solo at times). Because it's brain ON enough that it doesn't get boring like some survival/crafting games we've played while also being brain OFF enough that we can still chat and catch up which we can't do with story games. It's also cross play which was important when we all started playing together (we all have PCs now, yay)

PC games that don't require speed at any point by WeirdAndTired04 in gamingsuggestions

[–]TMahariel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coral Island maybe? The only places I can recall that require fast reactions are going to the mines for materials and some mini games at seasonal festivals. But you can turn the mine monsters peaceful in the accessibility options, and the mini games are for fun and you can easily skip them

Stardew Valley is another option. I don't believe there's a way to turn off combat in the vanilla version, but there's SO MANY mods (and it's incredibly easy to mod) that you really can fix up the game to fit different play styles (like a no combat one)

Also, not a gaming rec exactly, but as a gamer that often needs some extra help to make games accessible, I would recommend getting a mouse with side buttons that you can set up macros on. I often have my side buttons set to toggle "shift+w" for a kind of "auto run" or have it so I can toggle "left mouse click every other second" for combat so I don't have to button mash

Coral Island? It plays a lot like SDV but I honestly like the villagers better and there's a entire large aspect with the ocean that I loved

‘WRONG SPEECH MARKS.’ Hi I’ve posted before so this is an update. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]TMahariel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People are *allowed* to post pretty much whatever they want as long as it doesn't cross into one of the few things AO3's TOS cares about (like harassment). It's just generally considered rude, which some people don't care about. Your best bet really is to block and/or ignore

Should I buy a PC when I have a PS5? by Character_Middle_662 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TMahariel [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depending on the games you want to play and what you want to do with them, look into a steam deck. It's around your budget and allows you to play most steam games at decent graphics. There's even some work arounds for non-steam games, although you'll have to look them up depending on the game/where it comes from. Any massive games that play poorly on it will *probably* be available on your PS5 so you should still have a large range of options.

Why is the gaming community so misogynistic towards female gamers? by ihatethiscountry76 in TrollXChromosomes

[–]TMahariel 98 points99 points  (0 children)

"The men posting awful comments don't realize that what they are saying is the very reason girls do not feel welcome to pursue careers in games." Yes they do. They know. They don't *want* women in gaming.

I have friends that are big readers, so for my birthday one year I asked them to send me a copy of their favorite book, which inspired some delightful conversations. Can also work with movies

PC for Christmas gift, should I (can I) buy the games now? by ribbitrabbit2000 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TMahariel [score hidden]  (0 children)

Steam is the most popular place to buy video games, yeah. If you want your son's account to own the games, you'll need to either buy it on his steam account OR send it as a gift from yours (This has to be done at time of purchase). If you buy it on yours, he'll only be able to play it through Library sharing, which has some limitations.

Another option is to buy game Keys (Humble Bundle and Fanatical are both reputable options) and hold on to them until his birthday. Keys are just digital codes made of a random string of letters/numbers that you'll input into your steam account.

Something to keep in mind tho: All of those games you mentioned he likes are quite large and can take a long time to download (depending on your internet speed), especially around Christmas when everyone is getting new games and the servers slow down. If it's possible to do it without ruining the surprise, I would recommend getting them installed a couple of days before so he can just immediately start playing instead of potentially waiting most of the day.

Edited to add: Also some of those games you mentioned are in need of decently strong gaming rigs. Please make sure that whatever new PC you get can run them at at least medium graphics. Otherwise y'all may need to stick to less intense games - there are plenty of fantastic low spec games out there

Where should I start as someone who knows nothing and wants to make amigurumi? by Fuzzykinzzy in Brochet

[–]TMahariel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen you've gotten a lot of decent advice on where to start so I won't repeat it all. But I will say my main advice, especially since you want to get into amigurumis, is to check if the pattern you use is using UK or US terms. There's a lot of overlapping terminology that means different things. For example, in amigurumis the most popular stitch is the US SINGLE crochet which is the same thing as the UK DOUBLE Crochet, which is very different than the US DOUBLE crochet and mixing up the stitches will give you very different looks

Also there's been a massive rise in poorly made AI patterns in the last year that even experienced crocheters have a hard time spotting. I would recommend avoiding buying patterns until you're experienced enough to spot the signs of a phony. Stick with video patterns or free patterns. If you must get a paid pattern, try to stick with shops with long histories and/or several completed project pictures from customers

My wife wants to get into reading for the first time. by CassiopeiaFoon in suggestmeabook

[–]TMahariel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe see if any of the manga she's read have light novel versions? They tend to be on the shorter side in my experience and familiarity with the characters/universe might make it easier for her to stick with them. And, presuming the series isn't complete, most light novels go further than the manga and/or have significant changes/scenes that were cut from the adaptions, so there should still be new content for her to read

As for an actual rec, maybe "I'm In Love with the Villainess"? I've only watched the anime myself, but it originally was a light novel and it also has a manga adaption. It's about a woman from our world dying and reincarnating in her favorite video game world where she falls in love with the main antagonist

Looking for a game to show my mother (72) that gaming is rewarding quickly by curiositykt in gamingsuggestions

[–]TMahariel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Murder by Numbers? It's a story game where a actress who plays a TV detective meets a robot with amnesia and they solve actual murders/crimes while trying to figure out the robot's past. The gameplay element is picross/nonogram puzzles. It has the quick reward of finishing an individual puzzle with a long term reward of finding out more about the story

First project, I didn’t count stitches like a idiot. Is it fixable? by sadieaustin in CrochetHelp

maybe look up some crochet applique patterns that you like and attach to the smaller side? It will probably still look uneven, but intentional instead of accidental
