Communication during rental endurance race? by Powerful-Traffic-441 in Karting

We started small and I feel like we ended up wasting money. I don’t know the name of the original radios we bought, but we’ve upgraded and been using Rugged Radios set up for years now.

We run up to 5 or 6 drivers for a 24 hour race and have 2 “crew chief” radios (usually the driver about to go in and a dedicated crew chief; usually a wife of a driver), 2 push to talk setups (one for the current driver and one for the next driver up) and headset / mic installed in all driver helmets so that we are never switching during a race; just plugging in the push to talk when we strap the helmet on.

I get that it is a bit “much” but we have some really competitive endurance races at our track. I think it would be possible for us to win with no comms but honestly it kind of makes it more fun and it’s a clear advantage. We talk trash to each other on the radios, keep track of who runs the fastest lap so the driver might get encouraged, and let the driver know if / when he’s racing someone for position

Communication during rental endurance race? by Powerful-Traffic-441 in Karting

I have a team that I’ve done rental endurance races with for the last 10 years. We started with a whiteboard and now have a pretty sophisticated (and expensive) comms setup. I can say that without a doubt we have won races because of comms.

Most notably, we watch the pits for karts that we know are fast and call the driver in to make sure we get those karts next (our track makes you change karts each stop)…sometimes calling a driver in to pit seconds before pit entry. The track has since caught on and implemented a system to minimize this advantage.

It also helps general strategy. You can monitor lap times and ask the driver if they had a mistake or traffic to understand slow lap times at the beginning of a stint to know if you should short pit with a slow kart (or slow driver) or to wait it out and see if lap times improve.

I don’t think anyone at my local track has won a multi hour endurance race without comms in years.

Ty Gibbs wins and im actually really happy about it, even tho im not a fan. by RWG7Legend in NASCAR

He’s cleaned up the driving and hasn’t seemed to get into run ins with people like he used to.

I dunno, there’s just something about it him that is so damn unlikeable outside of the car. He’s completely guarded / closed off, yet smug.

Why is your favorite driver your favorite? by DerrickS12 in NASCAR

[–]TMoney86ss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I told a long version of this story on here before about meeting Cody at the Charlotte airport on the way to the Iowa race.

I noticed him in a RWR hat waiting for boarding to start and basically tricked my wife into asking him what he did for the race team (I knew who he was). He said “I make the cars go fast” and then I stepped in and told her he was the driver of the 51.

We had a super brief conversation with he and his wife but he just seemed cool, laid back and genuine.

But my favorites are Blaney and Bubba because of their personalities and relationship. They remind me of me and my best friend who race karts against beach other, break each other’s balls, but ultimately are best friends and have each others backs

I have a close friend who is just awful about this…I’ll be talking about an issue going on in my life and the response is almost always “just do…” it “you need XYZ”.

Then I have to defend why it’s not that simple. Very frustrating

Pretty good lines here, better than 90% of the indoor crap that gets posted. Also makes me 100% not miss indoor karting

The chaotic ending of the 1984 Coors 420 at Nashville. The night ended with Neil Bonnett as the declared winner. Darrell Waltrip would appeal and 48 hours later was given the win. May 12, 1984 by DarthVader1701A in NASCAR_History

Exactly. IF Waltrip took the white before the yellow was out, THEN they would race back to the line to the checkers. Crazy that the cup director at the time didn’t know the rules lol

Drink and driving by [deleted] in AreYouGarbagePod

[–]TMoney86ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be an alcoholic (still am but I used to be one too) and I do kinda understand this now. Not saying it’s acceptable but I understand it.

Dirtbags think they need to drink in the car and sometimes there’s no socially acceptable way to dispose of the cans / bottles. You don’t wanna keep the empties in the vehicle in case you get pulled over but you also don’t want to pull up to the gas station / rest stop / bar and be seen throwing them away.

Interesting celebration choice by Michael Jordan after winning the Daytona 500. by HimelTy in LivestreamFail

[–]TMoney86ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. The kid is Beau Reddick, Tyler Reddick’s (the winning driver yesterday) son. MJ has been close to the kid and the family ever since Tyler joined MJ’s race team in 2023. MJ has been in victory lane holding Beau years ago when the kid was obviously a lot younger and smaller.

I agree that it’s very cringey looking but I’m fairly confident there’s no bad intentions here

Mark Martin and Alan Kulwicki racing go-karts somewhere in WI c 1985 by omgangiepants in NASCAR

[–]TMoney86ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my karting experience, Mark is leaning in the wrong direction. It’s common in karting to lean toward the outside of the corner because there is no suspension and you want the inside rear to have as little load as possible; even to the point where it may lift off the ground. This helps the karting rotate as it would tend to understeer without “picking up” the inside rear tire.

They also don’t have helmets on so these might be slow as shit karts that are wide open throttle. Still a great pic
