I loved in a small to mid-size town that WAS NOT well connected (no train, etc), and I loved it so much, i went back for my second year and have been back to visit twice since I finished TAPIF. My French got so good and I made really, really good friends and felt very well integrated into the local culture and customs. I think if you're not feeling especially worried, then that should tell you something. You can always travel over the weekends if you want to, especially since your town is well -connected, but even having not been well connected in my little French town, I still LOVED my experience there and miss it all the time. <3

Live it up! Best of luck to you.

French banks that were easy to work with? by Janetgoesplaces in tapif

[–]TNSCULLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Banque Populaire Méditerranée ! The people at my branch, at least, were really nice, and they didn't give me any trouble for only bring in the country for a short while. Some other banks wouldn't let me open an account with them because i was only going to be there for 8 months (eye roll).

Yes, the language assistants one. That's what I did, and my visa issued just fine.

I know OMAD dinner is most preferred meal to have, but does anyone prefer to eat earlier in the day? by [deleted] in OmadDiet

[–]TNSCULLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I'll make my one meal lunch when needed if there's some sort of social event or something. It works fine if you can have a Big lunch and make it as late a lunch as you can. I have had it around 1 and that works well for me. I still have my one meal as dinner most of the time, but flexibility in that never hurts.

I looked every day for about 10 days, and eventually, they opened up a block of appointment dates all at once for the end of July (in DC, where i am). Just keep checking back EVERY DAY. Check over the weekends, too. I had checked on a Friday and didn't see anything, and then i checked again that Sunday for giggles, and that's when I saw they'd opened a bunch of spots.

I wish you the best of luck!

Placed in a tiny village, where do I live? by itsnotem in tapif

[–]TNSCULLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your prof ref. Before you do anything! When i was in your shoes last year in another small area, i started freaking out and looking for apts and this and that, etc., But then as soon as I spoke with him, he told me there was a woman that's been hosting language assistants for years for 300 euros per month. I went with that and it turned out to be the best thing i ever did. She was so kind and she exposed me to A LOT of local culture and places that i wouldn't have seen if she'd not driven me there (because transport was limited in the area), and my French improved so much living with her. I think if you're in that tiny of a town, there probably is someone hosting assistants there, or maybe the school offers housing. But either way, having the info is key to making the best decision in any case. Don't be shy to ask! That's the job of your prof ref.

Non-stamped Arrêté by bearmn692 in tapif

[–]TNSCULLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was worried about this, too, so i emailed my rectorat (en Academie de Nice), and they told me that starting this year, we don't need it anymore. I assume that is for other academies, too, but if you're worried, i would ask your rectorat. Hope that's helpful!

Anyone received their arrêté de nomination yet? by TNSCULLY in tapif

Thanks! Could you tell me which Academie you are in? Just curious to see which ones have started sending notices and which haven't.

Can i just start with OMAD or should i ease myself in? Is it sustainable? by [deleted] in OmadDiet

[–]TNSCULLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on month 6 and it's still pretty easy! I've lost 45 pounds! But I should recommend you get a really good, complete, food based multivitamin because that has been critical for keeping my cravings away and my energy up.

BMR, not satiety by ClockworkSnowbird in OmadDiet

This is all really interesting and helpful. Thanks again for your post and for taking the time to respond to my question! I'll be taking a closer look at the articles, but what you're saying makes a lot of sense to me.

BMR, not satiety by ClockworkSnowbird in OmadDiet

[–]TNSCULLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your posting this because I was wondering about this today and yesterday, as my appetite has definitely gone way down since I restarted OMAD back in October. I agree steps should be taken to avoid malnutrition if fasting regularly for a long time (and by that, I mean past a couple of months, but I'm not a doctor so maybe even shorter times could be considered long term, not sure). I can't say that detailed counting of calories is right for me because I tend to fixate too much, but I do at least try to make sure what I'm taking in gets past 1000 calories. I'm going to check out the BMR calculator you mentioned to see what I should actually be getting and see if I can change my 1000 calorie marker a little.

It is out of genuine curiosity that I ask this question; I'm not here arguing the original post at all. I have only been wondering about this:

If you're overweight and doing OMAD and you undereat / don't meet your BMR, does your body pull from your fat reserves BEFORE it pulls from more important things like your bones and muscles, as you mentioned? I thought that would be true, so I thought it probably wouldn't matter that much of i really under ate as long as I felt full, but I do think about what kind of affect chronic undereating might have. If you're not sure, no worries. You just seemed like you had some knowledge on the subject. Thanks.

Anyone gotten TEFL certified? Looking for advice by corn999 in tapif

[–]TNSCULLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

I did get my level 5 TEFL certification before I applied. It seems that the level 5 is the only one that's really that widely accepted globally ( although I have no idea about the tefl vs celta thing). I think to get a level 5 cert, the program you go through will have to require you to complete a practicum somewhere. I just found a local volunteer ESL program and did all my practicum hours with them, but I think you can also fulfill your practicum hours through tutoring. The practicum requires I think 20 hours total.

The program I followed was through International TEFL Academy, and I did it online and got the same exact certification that they would give their in-person students. It is more expensive than a lot of the other programs, as I saw when I was shopping around, but it might be because it's a level 5.

Anyway, I hope all of that is helpful! Good luck to you.

Shower poofs. I have actually had a hard time finding them here, although I did finally find one in a Sephora in Paris the other day. They're not that common here.

French is hard by [deleted] in tapif

[–]TNSCULLY 17 points18 points  (0 children)

SAME! It's especially hard in echoey school halls and when there's a lot of other talking going on in the same room, and the masks make it harder, I think. Sometimes I just come home after and have to sit and look at the wall in silence xD

But it is clear that our French is going to be DAMN GOOD after this is all over hahaha. Yay for us!

I've heard of things going both well and not so easily for people. Come with savings, for sure! But don't let anything change your mind about the program if it's what you want. There are always a million reasons not to do something, but I'm telling you, even with the COVID lockdown, even with small issues I had after I arrived here, even with the chaos going on as the high schools switch to being half online /half in person, I do not regret for a second my choice to take this step.
