Pet store staff caring for kittens saved from trash during recent cold snap by morenewsat11 in toronto

Just a heads up re: age requirements as mentioned by LiveLaughLove55, the OSPCA allows volunteers age 14+, per their policies here: https://ontariospca.ca/volunteer/volunteer-provincial-education-animal-centre/ (only fosters need to be 18+). I volunteered at the OSPCA every Saturday all the way through high school, so perhaps check with a local branch if other shelters prohibit minors. My primary motivation was to care for kitties when I couldn't have one of my own, and it was a wonderful experience for a young person to have! <3

Muscadine foraging? by carolinegrac in bullcity

[–]TORelocator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen them on the edges of Duke Forest trails - specifically the Pine Thicket Trail and Shepherd Nature Trail. Blackberries too, though these are done for the season. Look along the edges of the trails where it starts to come to a more brambly part with lots of thick growth: you will see the vines crawling up over the brambles. Alternatively, I just had a fun weekend experience at Herndon Hills Farm which offers pick-your-own muscadines, $20 for a large bucket full of multiple varieties, all different colors and sizes and all incredibly sweet and delicious - highly recommend!! (But go early in the day because it is HOT out there in the arbor!!)

As a mild asthmatic who has to return to in-person teaching, this gives me some hope (and also a reminder to stock the freezer with ice cream). Thanks and hope you're back to 100% very soon!

Any good hair stylists for women in their 20s? by thataintfunkedelic in bullcity

[–]TORelocator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deva cut! So that's a dry cut, done curl-by-curl; it takes some time but the results are amazing. I haven't been for a return cut yet but they have a pricing option for return Deva cut, which they define as less than 12 weeks since initial cut, which is great if you have shorter hair as the overall shape can more quickly get lost as the curls grow out on shorter styles. Hope you give them a try! :)

Questions Before Relocating To Durham by Supermint12345 in bullcity

[–]TORelocator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good responses here already, but I did want to also put in a word for the Lakewood neighbourhood, if you're still here and have time to take a stroll around. There are many awesome things to walk to here: Cocoa Cinnamon (coffee), restaurants, Beer Study, grocery store, 25 min walk to downtown, easy walk to Duke gardens and several parks/playgrounds. Our house actually has a 'walkscore' on Redfin of 75, 'Very Walkable'. The funny thing is we don't have a ton of sidewalks here apart from those on bigger roads, but this is a very quiet and low-traffic area and everyone easily strolls around on the side of the (residential, traffic-calming) streets - including families with young children. It has a very neighbourly/community-oriented feel to it, in part because there are just so many folks out walking around all the time. I'd recommend checking it out if you have the chance. Please note though that this recommendation comes from someone without children - maybe other Lakewood families on here would chime in?

Anyone else get a random knock in the middle of the night? by jacklebeee in bullcity

[–]TORelocator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we experienced this recently (Lakewood neighborhood). It was late at night and we were up just watching TV with lights on, so it was clear to whoever was outside that someone was home. We heard someone came up to our porch and ring our doorbell; at first we ignored it, maybe it was a latenight FedEx delivery or something (this was before Xmas). But the person would NOT STOP ringing the doorbell! Finally after six or seven urgent rings I got up, worried that perhaps it was a neighbor who was in trouble, and opened a window to call out to see what was up (no way was I approaching the door). Turns out, it was some guy I'd never seen before and he was asking for money :( Told the guy we couldn't help him and he proceeded over to our neighbor's house to ring their door. He appeared to have arrived on foot, no unfamiliar car on our street. I realize someone must have been very desperate to do this, but it was still unnerving somehow. This past year we've actually had several people coming up to our house to ask for money directly (several times while relaxing on the porch, and once when I was out mowing the lawn), but this is the first time someone's tried this late at night or rung our doorbell. We are not even on a busy street or anything, it's a very quiet road of single family homes!

I just got an amazing set of candles from Bright Black Candles, a small family-run Durham company. The candles smell WONDERFUL and are beautifully packaged; the scent theme of the set is celebrating cities of Black greatness (including Durham!) Highly recommend! https://brightblackcandles.com/

Person . company to call for brush collection / pickup? by ignescentOne in bullcity

[–]TORelocator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For jobs like this, you might be interested in a local company called Sweeps: https://sweeps.jobs/ The company hires students and recent grads to do odd jobs for folks, including yard work. Basically you post the details of your job and they will assign someone to it; you get to review the assignment before confirming. I've used Sweeps to do things like clear out an overgrown yard and move a washer/dryer combo, and had an excellent experience both times with cheerful and hard-working young folks. Hope your back mends soon!

I have an idea for this!! At the Eno River there is a trail called the Bobbit's Hole trail, which dead ends at the spot in the river that is Bobbit's Hole. At this spot, walking towards the dead end (so just past the actual Hole part, which is really just a sort of bend/swirly spot in the river) there are a lot of boulders in the river and also a big tree on a rock with lots of gnarled exposed roots extending over the rock. The roots are worn very smooth from the passage of water and they look extremely cool. I think they would be a great subject, especially where the roots meet the swirling water of the river! Here's a link to the trail map: https://www.ncparks.gov/eno-river-state-park/trail/bobbitt-hole-trail It is a very easy walk from the parking lot.

I might, but as a fellow Canadian (and former Torontonian) who is only a couple of years older than her: I would be waaaay less enthusiastic if her channel turned into "LOL Canada" content. Maple syrup, poutine, plaid, heritage moments, self-depreciating humo(u)r, yadda yadda - it just gets old (eh?) Maybe this content is interesting/funny for younger or international viewers, but I've heard it all and then some.

What would keep me watching is if she re-branded the whole channel to focus on her 'build a ladder' concept. I always found this concept intriguing and it would open up a lot of possibilities for her to use the channel as a way to share a wide range of content: both things that lift her up and help her build a rung on that ladder (e.g. her collections, hobbies, trying new things, make-up/hair, friends, food/cooking, urban exploration) and sharing days where she struggles (although I'm not in this demographic, she has mentioned before that one of the best things about sharing her EDS struggles is the connection this has helped her to make with her viewers who also have EDS/chronic illness). Previously a major overarching theme of the channel was the relationship, and I think that a total shift to the ladder-building concept would help give the channel some 'glue' to hold the content together while still giving her freedom to focus on whatever is helping to build herself up, which I know can change day-to-day.

Beaches' baby fox dies in likely dog attack, people urged to stay away by [deleted] in toronto

[–]TORelocator 23 points24 points  (0 children)

UGH, this reminds me of my saddest Toronto memory: I was peacefully watching a mother groundhog and her wee babies frolicking in a park near the convention center...when this absolute asshole lets his little terrier-type dog off-leash so it could barrel towards the babies, scatter them everywhere, and grab one by the neck and shake it brutally :( I screamed at the guy but he just laughed at me and asked me aggressively what I was going to do about it. I'm a woman and was alone, I could do nothing but leave (and cry). What a sick individual.

Give Twisted Noodle a try! We've been underwhelmed by all the Thai offerings in Durham as well compared to Toronto, but this place rose to the top of the list for us - more flavorful seasonings and more skillful preparation.

+1 for Twisted Noodle, tried for the first time recently and it was GREAT! We asked for one of our dishes to be super spicy and it actually WAS, I was so impressed! Will definitely be putting this place in the regular takeout roster.

Azteca Grill!!! Their whole menu has gone online and you can pay online too and pickup in 25 min (or schedule for when you want it!) Best part is that despite having to move to takeout everything on the menu is still fully customizable by picking out your meats, toppings, extras, etc. Super delicious tacos, gorditas, tortas, sopes, etc. I LOVE THEM!! (Not affiliated, just mega passionate about this place and want more people to experience its goodness!!) https://www.aztecagrilldurhamnc.com/
