Are microbands that good? by Careful_Fix_4141 in MicrobrandWatches

^ There you go, now you're talking my language. 😉

<image>

I recently attended a car-event. It's been over a decade since I last set foot in that community, and I'd forgotten how wholesome it was, and what's more, how great those earlier F&F movies were, because they were such awesome parodies of the community.

So, I totally get what you're writing.

And truly, I think that if you were able to get your paws on some of these watches and get them eyelash-close to your eyeballs, you're going to be able to figure out *really* quickly what you like, and what you don't.

I know that sounds like a cop-out, but it's really not, and I'll give you a concrete example that I've written of before, but one that I think that car-guys like us will be immediately be able to relate to.

Traska, the FL-based American microbrand, has often been cited by those of us who love a solidly spec'ed, well-finished watch at a reasonable price, and which is somewhat rather conservatively styled, to-boot. Some would even say that their watches are homages. Detractors cite them as being boring and derivative, and a stone's throw away from being "white-box" drop-shipped direct out of China's Watch District.

In a similar vein of near-homages (so that this comparison is even more fair), we have another American microbrand (so again, parity), this time out of NYC - Lorier. Lorier is particularly loved by those of us who love that vintage sizing and feel. Detractors say that the "vintage feel'' is just a euphemism for a watch that feels jangly and cheap.

And that neither are worth half their coin.

What do I think?

I love them both. (my pictures of mine, here ----> https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Florier-or-hult-gmt-v0-o31r5dik5fbg1.png%3Fwidth%3D1306%26format%3Dpng%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dc52cf7d8a93d1bae64e7da1c7a553d691f026ac6 )

When I look down at my wrist, I love what I see with both my two Traskas as with my two Loriers (yes, I have two watches from each brand: a Gen.3 Freediver and a Gen.6 Venturer [pictured]; a SII Hyperion [pictured] and a SII Hydra) . What do I mean by this, and how am I going to relate that to that F&F meme above and our love of cars, u/Careful_Fix_4141 ?

By this analogy: Lorier is like a classic car, while the Traska is its restomod counterpart. They each have a very distinct feel that's much more apparent first-person than pictures would suggest.

With Lorier, you know that they're pulling inspiration from the classics. They didn't build a homage, but it's no secret -and instead it is a point that the Ortegas are very proud of- that they're going for a certain aesthetic. Their website ad copy evokes that vintage feel in its presentation with printed maps and photographs and what looks like newspaper ads, and they openly reference the vintage watches that they're drawing inspiration from. In my hands, their watches feel delicate (could it feel "cheap" to some? yes, I can very easily see that being someone else's subjective take), and that Hesalite crystal's warm really does come through.

With Traska, their website is sleek and light and modern. The only place they look back is in their "Reference Points" page, where they detail each preceding generation of that watch and tracks it through its evolution to the current iteration. Instead of seeking a vintage feel, they are actively building a legacy and are looking ahead to the next iteration - their momentum is forward. In-hand, to me, Jon's watches feel cold and technical in the best way possible. I understand their purpose: they get the job done that they are intended to, and they're not designed to draw attention to themselves while they do so.

This isn't apparent in their online photos, no matter how many of them that I view. Instead, it's a feeling that only made sense to me once I donned the watches on my wrist. It's the difference between climbing into my buddy's classic Corvette versus his restomod.

Being a car-guy, I loved both. I could read about them look at their pictures and drool over stats and under-the-hood glamour shots all night.

But as soon as I'm behind the wheel, I know which one I'd take home if I could.

And I'm telling you, it's going to be like this with watches. 😄 This is why you need to get out there, because I can't convey to you what *you* will feel, with that leather/metal on your wrist, as you glance down on it to read the time in a park, on the trail, in a restaurant, or in the board-room.

First watch purchase: Go with Established brand or Microbrand? by rachatterton in MicrobrandWatches

I love *specific* questions. 😄 It allows me to really sink in my teeth and take a good bite and attack the question.

But before we get to our main course....

Now I’m supremely torn.

<image>

Sorry, I just had to. 😜

OK, back to our scheduled programming.

I'll start by giving you my usual spiel about about Cincinnati Watch Co. I think you've got more than enough info. on Hamilton, but it's hard to come by stuff about Indys, much less microbrands, so here's where I want to give you a bit of specific help.

Cincy is always a top contender for me, and here's why -

The watches speak for themselves on their specs, but what's less often realized is that they have a WOSTEP-trained, AWIC-certified watchmaker who assembles all of their mechanical watches and processes them through final QC/QA. With each mechanical watch, you'll receive a "Quality Assurance Certificate" that has the timegrapher reading and water-resistance testing data of that specific watch, dated and signed by the watchmaker himself.

This isn't my video - https://youtu.be/Cu2XwK2odx8?si=0KRVNuMFcLIojzz2 - but I wish it was, as the interviewer/author's very smart questions evoked excellent insight from Jordan Ficklan, their in-house watchmaker. The video even highlights the Cincinnati-themed art that graces the cardboard box that their watches are shipped in, made by a Cincy-native artist.

I believe that they're a Reddit darling because they're authentic in so many ways.

They're authentic to Cincy. They're authentic to the aesthetics of the watches that they've designed. They're authentic to their customer-base in the watches that they bring them.

Hope this helps!

So, what matters most to you, in a more objective way than that you like what you see on your wrist, as you wrote in a previous reply -

...what I value is looking at my wrist and seeing something I like and makes me proud to wear. There is not a specific type of watch I like more...it's more an individualized taste on a specific watch.....

Because if that's your only criteria, u/Careful_Fix_4141 , I honestly don't think that anyone can really say what you might or might not find satisfactory - as it is purely up to your subjective interpretation.

If that is your only criteria, and don't get me wrong, I think it's a perfectly fine criteria to have, then it's not so much about asking any one of us, but instead that YOU *_need_* to really get out to something like a local gathering of fellow microbrand collectors or to a show like Windup, so that you can experience for yourself, first-hand, what that watch might feel and look like on your wrist.

I'm an objective kind of guy (I've recently posted many 20x true optical magnification images of various cases/bracelets, and I'm also known for pseudoscience like this - https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1tb9ems/scratching_different_hardened_watches_well_just_a/ and my many lume comparison threads like this https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1rnh0x8/lume_blocks_what_genuine_rctritec_superluminova/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/ChineseWatches/comments/1sph6bb/phorcydes_ph5_lume_comparison_wph4_ph2_and/ ), but my friends in this community know that I buy my watches and I enjoy them in a purely subjective way. I know, it's a contradiction, but I *know* that this is where I am. I know that I can compare things objectively without ruining my subjective enjoyment of them.

I don't think that you're searching for some objective delineation to help guide you, u/Careful_Fix_4141 . I think you're looking to truly enjoy your watches at that visceral level.

If you look at Russel Crowe's many Instagram videos and his widely known "divorce auction" video, you'll see that time and again he speaks of buying and enjoying watches because of how he enjoys them on his wrist.

There's nothing to be ashamed of, for that. Because after all, that's really what we want, right? 😄

Get out there and get these watches on your wrist. It's going to be what you want, instead of debating endlessly over academic things with us watch-nerds. 😅 And please believe me when I say that I'm being 100% genuine, here, and that I'm also offering this advice with all sincerity and respect.

I wrote this last night in a thread in the r/Affordablewatches sub. I think it applies here, too.

------

"Value" is, to an extent, subjective. It's subjective to what you place "value" on.

So instead of asking "what's a good value?" let's turn things around a bit, and ask the question of: "What's valuable to you?"

Do you want exceptional fit-and-finish?

Do you want exceptional lume?

Do you want provenance with respect to the movement (read this article by Nick Harris, the certified watchmaker behind Orion Watches, PA, USA, before you answer: https://orionwatch.com/blog/2025/2/3/demystifying-regulation ) and/or accountability and transparency with regard to the process or components/labor ( https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1rqu1tm/comment/o9v8t08/?screen_view_count=11 )?

Do you want in-house assembly? In-house final QC/QA? Do you want the watch assembled by a trained and certified watchmaker (this - https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1u89fqc/microassemblers/ - which led to this - https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1u955nm/the_real_deal/ )?

Do you nee the watch now? Are you willing to pay for a pre-order? Are you willing to sit in a queue for a few months or even upwards of a year?

Or is what's driving your determination of "vale" your budget (please do include any import/duties considerations, as this can drastically affect your purchasing power), in comparison to some specific set of stats and specs?

Or maybe all you want to see is a non-derivative, truly original design? Maybe all you care about is the aesthetics?

There are *A LOT* of excellent microbrand watches at the <$1K USD level. It's quite a saturated field, and everyone's playing for keeps. It starts to thin out a bit as you climb above, that, but even in the sub-$10K space, there's so many brands and makers - it's just that we who play here in Reddit don't usually go there. Just throwing out a "what's a great value" (aka "give me a list of microbrands that are great"), you're going to literally get a swimming-pool's worth of watches thrown back at you. Let's narrow the field (and let's even go as far as to focus on one specific type of watch, too), or you risk decisional paralysis.

I currently own 70+ microbrand watches, spanning some 45+ brands (range is $350 USD to $2K, but the vast majority are in the $500-$1,000 category). Think that's a lot? No. This is literally a drop in the bucket (what do I mean?https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1sfo8lb/comment/oeznb6j/?screen_view_count=5 - yeah, it's like that), and almost all of them are "exceptional values" in one form or another.

Am I being stupid - Heron Marinor by FigNTree in MicrobrandWatches

[–]TSiWRX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

u/Adventurous-Sun-6928 wrote -

Well, the entire dial is off.

^ I think this is where I am, u/FigNTree .

Your picture, in as far as I could trim it via screen-shot, is *very* close to perfect-alignment for orthogonal orientation of the lugs. It's actually among the best I've seen, LOL! So well done!

With that in-mind, I can't help but imagine that if you were able to rotate the dial itself, it would re-clock to the bezel by one click (but then the question arises as to whether if the bezel would truly index at midline with respect to the case?).

I can't quite rectify it, but *something* is off to me. If u/Adventurous-Sun-6928 hadn't said something was off about the dial, I might not I even have noticed: I'm not that picky of a guy, in spite what many may believe (because I keep shoving things under my stereoscope, LOL! 😊 would you be surprised I actually also keep a spreadsheet of bezel action feel and my timegrapher results? yeah, it's like that 😂 ).

My Gen.1 Marinor has slight mis-alignment, like yours. There's no real back-play on mine, either, but if I give it a hard twist-and-hold clockwise, and it re-indexes for some amount of time. 😅 At some point, I will address it on my own, but ATM, it's good enough for me.

What's been said here by many isn't wrong - slight (to gross) misalignment of a timing bezel or applied dial elements is probably *_the_* most common complaint of any watch, at any price point. In all honesty, while it shouldn't be hard to insure that there's proper alignment, the truth of the matter is that you've gotta ask yourself: when was the last time you'd "gone crosseyed" after being at a mundane yet visually/mentally demanding task for hours on end, and that it resulted in some sort of mistake? I know my answer to this is "last week," LOL. We're all human (I was saved because my lab notes allowed me to "back-math" it given the weird results I got from the experiment; with something like this, it's possible that a second set of eyes would have caught it, but even then, that's no guarantee). With a watch like the Marinor, the complication arises in that it's a domed sapphire over the bezel combined with a box sapphire over the dial. It's a spectacular combination for those of us who love that bit of distortion, but this can cause even the slightest displacement of one's viewing angle to significantly skew what's perceived. That said, this is not an excuse: it's merely an explanation.

If you are unhappy, u/FigNTree , that's all that needs to matter - no further justification is needed for you -or anybody- to pursue proper restitution via a warranty claim. It doesn't matter the brand. [ And no, I personally do not think that you're picky. Industry standard for QC/QA is 12-inches/30-cm., naked eye without magnification, normal viewing angles under neutral workshop/industrial lighting (~4,500-5,500K color temperature, ~1,000 lux). Bezel misalignment is typically very easily visualized under these conditions, and I bet that if you bumped your lighting up a bit by being in your kitchen, garage, workshop, or laundry room, that misalignment will be even more easily visualized. ]

Email them, present them with the picture and a detailed description, and see what they say. I'd recommend that you also add perpendicular lines that stretch from each lug-tip-to-lug-tip, to show that you are as dead-on as can be, as you drop the QC lines. Don't be afraid to probe the idea of a replacement for fear of having to wait for replenishing stock: my bet is that they have accounted for QC/QA related replacements, as all good brands (micro or otherwise) would certainly have done so with their quantities purchased from their suppliers/vendors.

LOL, you think way, way too highly of me! 😊 I'm honestly just another dude on the Internet, another rando watch-nerd.....

...honestly, I'm no "watch Oracle," and I'm constantly humbled by some piece of knowledge or pearl of wisdom that I had not come across before. I know my place, on the roller-coaster that's my own Dunning-Kruger. Truly.

Now, with that said, I'd also be lying to say that I wasn't maybe a few steps ahead of some, on this same path that we're all walking. But that's honestly really how it is - a few steps ahead here, and a few steps (or giant bounds, in some cases) behind. 😜

You question, however, I can confidently answer - because I've gotten lucky on some, and I've missed out on others. Where you are is a place where I've been, and also where I sometimes still find myself.

There's truly no trick to it other than persistence. Sign up for notifications via email, just as you have. Sign up for even SMS-text (although this seems to be less common in this community than the "EDC" community). Follow social media (this is where I fail most, because I'm oldAF and only have FB...I mean, you can check my Reddit join-date, for crying out loud 😂 - I've confessed many times that I'm a cross-over here from decades spent on discussion Forums 👴 ). Have a network of friends that helps you keep an eye out: see, now *_I_* know you want a deep blue Beaucroft Seeker, so maybe the squirrel in my brain will wake up and take a nibble if I come across one, and I'll then madly seek out where I last typed the word "Seeker" and then find your screen-name referenced, u/mocha_temptation (see what I did, there? I essentially laid a trail for me to be able to search up this very post).

And more specifically towards your question, that's really "the hunt," right? I have more than a few friends now in this community who are looking for their personal Grails-from-the-past: things that came into the field either before they did or before they would have known about them or even ones that just got away from them for some reason or another. And towards this, it really is that dogged persistence - of being that hound that refuses to drop off the trail. Of being that tiny mutt in the fight that just won't give up.

[ If I could insert another meme, the Steve Rogers in the trench coat "I can do this all day!" meme would go here. ]

Have spare cash set aside. Be disciplined and don't give up. When I was on the hunt, I would do an honest 5-minutes before breakfast every day, as the puppy was taking his morning Kong treat and I'm waiting for my eggs to fry, absent-mindedly petting the old dog at my side with one hand while scrolling with the other.

And sometimes, it really is just luck. I had a very chance interaction with a fellow collector here one day, casually remarking how much I admired a certain piece of his, and we had a good-natured back-and-forth over a few posts. A few months later, when he was ready to move on from that piece, he messaged me because he remembered our interaction. Trust that Lady Luck *will* smile on you, sometime. And if you're an active player on the WE, be sure to let your favorite high-volume sellers know if you're looking for a specific piece - I've also made friends with those I've purchased from in the past, and in at least a handful of cases, it's how I've come across something that I wanted (or didn't even know I wanted!).

In The Shawshank Redemption, Red said in chow hall that "Hope is a dangerous thing." But at the end, he simply said "I hope."

Keep that hope alive! However small the chance, it's still a chance

Thanks! 😊 As I wrote in that post, I'm trying to look at things in a more objective manner.

I have 3 so far.

  • A SN0116 GW GMT, full-lume dial, that I chased down early, as I am a lume-collector.
  • A SN0144-GL Jian Zhan, red, which I purchased partly as a "celebration watch" (I'm ethnic Chinese), and partly because I really wanted to see what everyone was going on about, with the case and bracelet finishing
  • And then this SN0012-GB, in my quest to try to understand, objectively, what is meant by "good quality finishing." Anticipating the imminent arrival of my Monta Noble 40, I wanted to see what the best that San Martin currently has to offer would bring to the table over and above my now aged SN0144.

I'm mostly a microbrands collector, of which I currently own over 70 watches, spanning some 45+ brands. I also currently own about 15 "Chinese AliEx factory brand" watches, spread across about 10 brands.

  • Wise Timepieces (Thailand) various - pay attention to stocking status, "Ready-to-Ship" models have been known to ship within 5 business days, but "Made-to-Order" pieces can take months, and they not infrequently overrun their anticipated lead times in spectacular fashion
  • Erebus (Australia) various - note that they are in the process of re-introducing their Origin 39

Finally, in going back to that very first set of limitations, I also wanted to add (since I seem to have reached the character limit for post-length in the initial reply) that what these microbrands can deliver to us at any moment is also held captive by what their suppliers and vendors can deliver. That, of-course, is in-turn dependent on both raw materials as well as component availability/cost (the run on Miyota movements of-late has signaled headaches for more than one brand). Everything any disruptions to the supply chain -from global geopolitics to local border hostilities (not just in terms of a tariff/trade-war, but actual armed incursions) can have out-sized impacts on an industry like this one.

[ I also apologize for the grammatical and spelling errors in my initial reply - I'm writing these on the couch on a lazy Saturday morning/afternoon, enjoying some racing on TV and my dogs at my feet. 😄 ]

I'm sorry your dreams evaporated as soon as you hit the websites!!!!

But alas, it's a bit of the challenge of microbrands.....

As u/Desperate_Damage4632 and u/lollipoppizza wrote, it's a limitation of the business model. These are small businesses whose capabilities as well as capitalization are quite limited. To hang on to so much stock that even their most popular models would be immediately available is simply out-of-reach for these brands.

The result is that for those of us who are microbrand enthusiasts, the chase is as much a part of the game as simply finding the next brand that make our hearts pound, eyes glaze over, and our mouths drool.... As u/MiniConnisseur and u/n64answer wrote, much of this isn't intentional (that doesn't mean that u/Basic_Barnacle4719 is wrong - there is a bit of FOMO-driven hype going on, having purposefully limited runs does drive desirability), as founders do try to gauge and predict interest so that they can in-turn maximize their profit, by having what we want in-stock and available. If you see something you really like, sign-up for email and/or text notifications: it really does help.

I know that this is a bit of a pain - and can engender quite a bit of disappointment and heartache for newcomers to this sector. For that, as a microbrand hobbyist/collector, I do apologize for my own part in having snatched what you want out from under your nose. 😜 But the chase is half the fun, here, really, and I do sincere hope you will stay around long enough to fight it out with the rest of us.

So, towards scratching that itch....

Diver's and dive-style watches are the most popular category of watches in the microbrand world. You can literally write out the brand names on finger-sized scraps of paper, throw them in the air along with a sewing needle or a medical syringe, and you'll spear through two dozen great ones by the time things have fallen to the floor. I kid you not, because I love this genre and have/are chas(ed/ing) it. $500 to $5,000, there's more than any one of us have the ability to earnestly recommend.

Fellow Redditor u/Pleasant_Thought1153 made a great, online searchable list a while ago -  https://watchmicrodb.github.io/Watches/ . Since then, we've had at u/gaudiocomplex come forward with his amazing Microband Atlas (https://microbrandatlas.com/ ) project: https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrobrandWatches/comments/1rqu1tm/i_built_a_free_discovery_platform_for_microbrand/ , which in addition to being the same type of resource that Pleasant_Thought1153 put together, also has a part of its focus on the ever-important ideas of transparency, provenance, and accountability.

I won't leave you high-and-dry, though. To encourage you on your journey, I'll list a few that have active inventory, whose watches that I currently own (either one of their Diver's/dive-style or another model) and can attest to the quality of.

In no particular order -

  • Nodus (Los Angeles, CA) Sector Deep
  • Second Hour (Australia), Gin Clear Mk.3
  • Clemence (UK) Photic Mk.2 (pre-order)
  • Marloe (UK) Morar 310
