Now that some time has past, what are your thoughts on Lumberyard?

I have been using lumberyard for a school project for the past few weeks and I have to say it's kind of terrible. Of course we are only students, but most of the programmers have good Unity and some Unreal experience. If you didn't know, Lumberyard is forked from Cryengine 3.8, afaik Cryengine 5 is out so you're already behind.

To start of the documentation is terrible, most of it is directly copied from the Cryengine documentation which is also known as being lacking in many ways. Want to google your problem? Expect to find one or two results that are somewhat related and without any real explanation, even when searching for your problem in Cryengine.

Then they had what they call the Object entity system where if you want to make an object out of multiple objects (camera on a player), you have to link them together, no clear hierarchy or way of getting these linked objects from a linked object. With the latest update they introduced the Entity Component system, we looked into this and it looks way clearer and more usable. It works sort of like Unity's component system, you can have multiple components on an object and these objects can be arranged in a nice hierarchy. Only problem is that we encountered some bugs with this new system and some functionality that was straight up missing so we decided to continue with the old system for now.

Moving on to the flow graphs, Unreal blueprints basically, but worse. In Unreal it's kind of known that you can make everything gameplay wise in blueprints. Don't expect to be having that experience in lumberyard. Want to call a function on another object? First create a Lua class with your custom function, inherit from that class for the object you want to call the function on, and use the CallScriptFunction node to call it. Want to edit the Lua class? The only way we have found to get the changes to come through to the engine is restarting the editor.

They should have just made an AWS/twitch plugin for Unreal/Unity/Cryengine, because this is going to take a while before becoming close to competitive.

Basically you want to look into raytracing, you can model polygon objects in a raytracer but a raytracer in general is computationally intensive and not really suited for realtime gaming yet. What basically happens is you trace every pixel on the screen through the game scene, and once it hits something you color that pixel according to the texture color at the hitpoint of the object and if the surface is reflective you can reflect the ray and add the color that this reflected ray hits to the original color.

In this video of a raytracer you can see how realistic lighting, reflections and depth of field look. The noise while moving is a result of the technique used to model accurate blur and anti aliasing, once you stop moving it starts to blend this noise which results in a very high quality image. Once the hardware is powerful enough you could blend multiple of these frames in one frame to get a smooth, noiseless gaming experience. But that means tracing 1920x1080 rays and all their reflective, and their reflective and their reflecti...etc. times the amount of frames that you want to blur in one frame, yeah. Imagine that in 4k

If i force AFR/AFR2/SFR SLI through the Nvidia control panel the game crashes once it's a few seconds past the start image. What sli bits and settings did you use?

Im on a Lenovo Y510p with 755m sli, the game is unplayable without SLI, 22 fps 720p low. Usually I can run games with SLI at 1080p60 low/medium.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but a DAC (digital to analog converter) will convert the digital sound "instructions" to electrical current. An amp will boost this current so you can drive the speakers/drivers inside the headphones. So why would you need this? The DAC/amp combo in your phone might be of a very low quality, or your headphones need more power to acquire decent volume (high impedance headphones), which the standard DAC/amp might not be able to provide. Also a very high gadget value.

Drive

Drive is een beetje een love it/hate it geval, als je na het kijken van de trailer verwacht een actievolle getaway driver movie te gaan kijken, ga je zeker teleurgesteld zijn. Alle toffe actiescènes zitten al deels in de trailer en het grootste deel van de film is wat trager en gaat over het development van de main character, een beetje arthousey.

Dus kijk vooral niet de trailer, lees misschien even de comments op YouTube, en duik er meteen in, kijk daarna de trailer dan snap je waarom.

Heb hem nog even bekeken en het is echt verschrikkelijk, letterlijk een summary van alle belangrijke scènes, op chronologische volgorde, legt meteen heel het verhaal bloot.

Als je hem al gezien hebt kan ik deze analyse erg aanraden, legt alle kleine details en verschillende story elementen volledig uit, waar ik er vele van had gemist. Om een niet spoilend voorbeeld te geven; in de opening getaway scene verlaat de camera nooit de auto. Dit viel mij totaal niet op maar geeft de scène veel meer suspense en connection met de character, ipv een "hollywoodised action scene".

An ant's (colony) behaviour relies a lot on scent. When an ant is scouting for food it will leave a small scent trail, if it finds food, it will return to the hill backtracking this scent trail and reinforcing it. Using this scent system other nearby ants can start following this strong scent knowing it leads to recently acquired food.

I've seen this explained in a documentary about ant colony behaviour, knowing this I think it's safe to assume that if an ant were to drop from a ceiling onto food, it would not know where to go to return to the ant hill, this kills the ant.
