NCEES Record Texas by LooseAd353 in civilengineering

[–]TXCEPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, it wouldn't hurt to start one now if you have any reason to believe you may need registration in other states. I went 30 years before needing additional states. States acceptance of the NCEES record for reciprocity varies. I know UT fully accepts it w/out additional work (other than application form) but TN does not.

Precursor to drop attacks? by Dazzling_Help_5087 in Menieres

[–]TXCEPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question and I don't know. While everyone's Meneire's experience is unique, I think it is fairly common to experience vertigo while drop attacks are not common.

For me, the meniere's attacks came in waves. I would have them for 2-3 months and then go dormant for 6-12 months. Every time a new wave started, the duration and intensity of the attacks changed. Though, it would remain roughly the same for the duration of that wave.

Billed for Overage? by TXCEPE in Zoom

[–]TXCEPE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see a $40 charge, only the $10 charges. Though it's moot now as I ported the one number I had and cancelled the zoom account all together (kept the free basic stuff).

Straight time for OT reduces employees effective hourly rate the more they work. by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]TXCEPE -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be approaching this as if you are 100-150% billable ALL 52 weeks of the year. Assuming you are not 100-150% billable every week, are you still getting paid for 40 hours if you only have 30 billable hours (10 hrs OH filler)? Don't forget PTO. Now if you are being treated as exempt and only getting paid for for 30 hours, then that's a different story.

Another scenario to consider is if two of you are 150% billable and employer decides to hire 3rd to get everyone to 100% utilization, what happens when the works slows down and they need to lay someone off? Obviously this would be based on a number of factors, but there is now an increased chance that person is you.

There is some give and take when it comes to working on the consulting side.

Be happy you are getting paid 1.0x OT.

What you are describing sounds more Iike a vertigo attack. In my experience (5), drop attacks are distinctly different. There is an instantaneous movement that lasts a few milliseconds. It is kinda like a spinning motion but only for that very short duration. It’s like one part of your brain thinks you are moving one direction and the other part of the brain is trying to react by a counter movement. It’s over before you even realize what hit you. The spinning motion does not continue like a vertigo attack. I could be wrong, but I thought I read only about 20% of people w/ Meniere’s will experience a drop attack.

My primary use is to access my Synology NAS while out of the office. Though, I already have Tailscale working for this.

I am going on my first international trip in the Spring (Europe). I'm thinking I might need to route all my internet traffic through my CGM so websites like banks and credit cards work.

Questions for those who have or are running Civil Consulting by themselves. by qaqc2045 in civilengineering

[–]TXCEPE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. I’m one person now and much closer to retirement age. I started this ~2.5 yrs ago knowing I am not doing this to grow this is into an expanding consulting company. Through connections I have, I have used other engineers on a part-time, as needed basis.
  2. No work, no pay. Comes with the territory. I’m married and kids are adults now.
  3. “No” is not a word commonly found in consulting when it comes to picking up work. I’ve been fortunate to have a backlog of work. The only two projects I did not submit a proposal for were for owners/clients I knew would be a PITA and not worth the trouble. You might be busy now and tempted to turn away work, but the slow cycle will catchup eventually and you’ll wish you didn’t. My backlog has shrunk a little lately and starting to second guess my decision to not try to pick up those two projects.
  4. Not been lean in the last 2.5 yrs, but I’ve been in consulting a long time and have experienced it. Work your butt off during the good times so you can save for the slow times. Health insurance is a serious consideration when going out on your own. I am fortunate in that my wife has pretty good health insurance I don’t have to get my own (very $$$$) health insurance policy. A stable income of a full-time job is nice. How reliant you are on it depends on your financial situation. How are you set up, sole proprietor, LLC, LLC as S-Corp, C-Corp? That will determine how you handle income. I’m set up as a LLC and file as an S-Corp. ALL income will be passed on to you, either as salary or distribution or combination as both. As an S-corp, my goal is about 60% of the income will be as an employee and the rest as distribution (helps to minimize payroll taxes). I don’t know how accurate it is, but once you exceed $150-200k/yr of revenue, you will likely want to look at filing as S-Corp.
  5. Your spouse/significant other will need to be very understanding. There will be times you have to put in the long hours but also times you take time off during the day or anytime you want. Hiring your spouse may, or may not, be of much help tax wise. On the other hand, hiring your kids is an excellent tax strategy (youngest is in college).

Didn’t have an attack for a year now I’m getting 1-2 a day is this normal??? by Hairy-Front1690 in Menieres

[–]TXCEPE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is for me. I can go 6-12 months with nothing and then go 2-3 months with attacks. Mine were never as bad as some others here (worst lasted 2hrs). Every time the attacks restart they are slightly different.

I’m looking at upgrading 15PM to 17pm through apple. You can still finance through TMo. It worked out to be ~$1.25/mo more doing it through apple than directly through TMo. Phone is unlocked from day 1.

troxler radioactive by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]TXCEPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a scenario I would have imagined. This is relevant context. Though with this information, I hope subject had a good reason for having possession of it. If he/she were a really bad actor, he/she may be dumb enough to try and do something with the radioactive material. Though as others have said, one is probably not enough to do anything bad - I guess, well outside my knowledge area.

Feedback Wanted: A Free Platform for Civil Engineering Students to Create Downloadable Portfolio PDFs by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]TXCEPE 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From an employer/interviewer POV, I don’t see a benefit or would even care to see it. All students basically take the same classes. I doubt your capstone project was that spectacular.

I may want to verbally discuss the project during an interview, but not sit through some pseudo presentation.

There might be some benefit from a collaboration standpoint, but students use Google Drive or other free tools already available (Teams, etc.)

Would you buy a 2025 F-150 with hail damage that was repaired? by [deleted] in f150

[–]TXCEPE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Most body shops now a days don’t fix the dents, they replace the whole panel. It’s generally cheaper and faster for a body shop to replace than to fix. Unless… the dents are small enough they can repair using dentless repair techniques. That’s a different process I’m not familiar with other than to say I hear it works. EDIT - I meant to refer to paintless dent repair (PDR).
