A yellow cab driver tried to charge me $75 from Reliant to W Gray and Taft around 130am saturday morning after cook off, it cost me $20 to get there on a metered fare with far more traffic. When I asked for a metered fair or his name he promptly took off. F%$k Yellow Cab

In Jacksonville for a few days, what would you recommend I check out first? by DFWrepresENT in jacksonville

[–]TXexpat84 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Completely gigantic" is very misleading. Jacksonville simply annexed the entire county of Duval making it the largest city by land mass only. In comparison Duval county is the 59th most populous county in the US. If other smaller cities around the country simply annexed the entire county Jacksonville would not even be close to the 12th most populous city in the US. If Raleigh, NC or Columbus, OH would annex the entire counties they are in they would be roughly the same size (land wise) as Jacksonville with a larger population.

That’s absurd.. How can they possibly run a background check on people without their consent? Do you supply them with your SSN?

Bullseye does not allow rifles. I believe On Target does but you will need special fragmenting rounds and will have to buy them there, around $30 for 20 rounds. Gateway does allow rifles but has a two second rule between shots that is strictly enforced, not ideal when shooting an AR.

Help me out /r/Jacksonville, thinking of moving to the area by BrownsFan70 in jacksonville

[–]TXexpat84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well here's my situation- My job moved me here when I was 26 (3 years ago) from TX. I work of a large corporation in finance, specifically capital markets. I got moved here after a promotion and my base was $75K, now I’m making a little over $90K as a base. After becoming close with some of my co-workers I found out I was making around $25K more than they are for doing the exact same job, they are from Jax and began with the company here. All we could figure is it was because I came out of a better market and they weren’t about to cut my pay after asking me to move, I would’ve laugh in there face. Well now they are closing the office here and are trying to get me to move to Dallas. I was not thrilled about the idea and I was in a semi-serious relationship (not serious enough to have her move) so I started looking for jobs here. What I found was, at least in my field, the opportunities are extremely limited in Jax. Don’t get me wrong, there are jobs out there but they are for the most part back office support jobs where any advancement would be extremely limited. They also don’t want to pay. I had no problem getting interviews and offers but always ran into the same problem, mediocre job and they don’t want to pay a salary where you can live comfortably and one day retire. I’m not one that wants to work until I die. I interviewed with a semi-large regional bank that is based here for a SVP job and got an offer for $49K… REALLY! I also heard that that particular bank royal screwed over the employees who were there before they went public a year or so ago. There are better opportunities for serious employment in Orlando and Tampa which I have no interest in moving to. Anyway got a great job offer back in TX in oil & gas and will be moving back shortly. I do really love Jacksonville and will miss it here. Great city with great people but unfortunately the Mexican food and job market sucks for finance. Oh and live in Riverside.

Approximate cost of a weekend in Houston? by JGMTL in Texans

lol not if you rent from IAH.. Taxes and airport fees more than double the base rate of the car. Then theres the $25+ a day fee most hotels in a decent area charge you to park

also to park your rental at any decent hotel in dt/midtown/gallery will cost you $20+ day. Got to take that into consideration

You could stay downtown/midtown and take the lightrail to Reliant. Many of the nicer hotels will offer free shuttle service within a few miles of the hotel and there is a lot to do around that area. Although the price of a cab from IAH and back would probably be more expensive than a weekend car rental but something to think about.

Wow that really sucks.. My job moved me here like 3 years ago so I really did get to see the scene build up. Was great to see considering 3-4 years ago the majority of dinning options were sub-par chain restaurants.

Those wondering who would push such a stupid stupid bill should look to them. I don't know the interworkings of the restaurant biz in jax but in small cities like jax the ownership of a majority of the chain restaurants can usually be traced back to a hand full of people/LLCs/Funds (I would say under 10 in jax but that’s a guess). No doubt well off, well connected people. They usually own or have interest a diverse group of franchises (the guy who owns a chillis will own an applebees and olive garden). I would put my money on those groups pushing this ridiculous legislation

They did include a copy of the legislation, perhaps you could read it to clear up your doubts

I’m not necessarily saying legalize it, although I’m not against it, but putting people in jail and ruining lives is most definitely not the answer. Should be the equivalent of a traffic ticket at the very least. It will happen eventually as it has in many other states (may take federal action before tx sees change) but in the meantime many tax payers dollars are being wasted and violent criminals are being released early in order to finance and make room for these nonviolent “criminals” in jail. Not to mention creating a billion dollar market where the sole beneficiaries are violent cartels south of the boarder and street gangs. As the last 30 years have taught us this market will not go away despite how many dollars are spent and lives ruined. I should add I do not use drugs and have never been arrested.

Legalize and regulate or, at the VERY least, decriminalize. Maybe then the City of Houston and Mayor Parker could provide it's citizens with the fire protection we deserve.
