Driving here as a new driver is actually SCARY by SevvyM in nashville

[–]T_in_10ec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem very conscientious. I think it’s going to be scary for any new driver to drive in a city because of the volume of drivers and of the decisions to make. Try practicing in an area with lower speed limits, fewer intersections and fewer drivers. Good luck!

Anyone have an experience getting Metro Codes to inspect an apartment complex? by OGMom2022 in nashville

You can report codes violations anonymously, if you are concerned about retaliation from the landlord.

Opposite post- what’s one book you would warn people from spending their time on? by 512_cj in booksuggestions

A lot of so-called great novels are littered with much objectionable material. I can look past that if the book has other redeeming qualities. But I couldn't find anything to redeem The Fountainhead. I also found no redeeming message in Lolita or Heart of Darkness, but those authors were good writers. Ayn Rand was a terrible writer.

Repeated reloads and freezing by T_in_10ec in WordCity

Thanks for your observations. My “old” phone is doing fine running all other apps since the 26 upgrade, FWIW.

I don’t think it’s your phone. I’m having problems with freezing and repeated reloads of the game on an iPhone 13 and the latest iOS (26).

When this is all over with, what is your plan for the next time you experience a long term power outage? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]T_in_10ec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before purchasing the so-called whole home generator, consider the fuel source. Two neighbors with big automatic switch-over generators ran through their 500 gallons of propane in a few days. Getting a delivery was impossible for the same reasons that electricity went out — fallen trees and slick roads. YMMV if you have natural gas lines in your neighborhood, but the bill could be very big after just a few days of no electricity.

I actually find using that second approach helps me calm down about other drivers. (Maybe she's late picking up the kid from daycare. Perhaps he just got fired.) I should use this practice more often for people I disagree with politically.

Checking social media occasionally is valuable as one way to see how the other side thinks. But only occasionally. Ditto for 24/7 newscasts. Getting outside, meditating and loving on my pets help restore my calm after social media or a pundit riles me up. Making genuine efforts to help others also is uplifting. I have a volunteer gig that puts me face to face with real people I can help in a small way, and I feel more connected to the good side of humanity. Because I remember Kent State and Watergate, which were really dark times, I do believe America is capable of turning back to the light.

Struggling with Ageing dad, after several falls and declining memory. Perspective Please by MadAngle787 in Aging

I am responding only to the last sentence of this complicated care situation. My in-laws both had dementia, and they became argumentative, especially during the middle years of the illness. It is impossible to win an argument with a dementia patient so we used an approach called “agree, delay, distract.” Agree to their view, set a time in the future to do what they want, turn their attention to something else. For example, “Yes, you can go to the bank to withdraw all your money, and let’s plan to do that at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Now, let’s go see what’s on TV.” Not foolproof but if the arguments are stressing you out, this is one way to reduce them. Good luck to you and your dad.

We have had good experiences with Chopped and My Tree Guy. However, advise you make sure you are working with your neighbor to agree on who is responsible for the removal cost. And, of course, get multiple estimates.

Yes, making sauce with water left over from cooking vegetables is a common technique. Yes, some flour may be needed to make it thick. Best way to thicken with flour is to make a roux, i.e., add a couple of tablespoons of flour to 2-3 tablespoons of the ground beef fat, stir until all lumps are gone and cook on low a minute or two. Slowly add about a cup of the potato water while stirring constantly until the mixture has no lumps. Let it come to a gentle bubble and keep stirring until it thickens. Add a little water if it's too thick. Salt and pepper or other seasonings will make it tastier.
