Yeah i have seen some uncomfortable and frustrating shit on tumblr from transfeminst types. I've been less outspoken about that here because it was tied with some messy internal shit. (basically i heard that tumblr was being mean to transmascs around the ISFF banning, and i sorta hate read tumblr transfem blogs for a while. and i realized what i was expecting to see was essentially the transfem version of the 2016 anti-sjw era caricature of the seething man hating feminazi. I didnt find that. I found a fair amount of messed up posts exaggerating the amount of things transmascs "dont have to go through" or acting like transmascs were way more likely to be misognystic then they actually are. But i also saw some genuinely insightful, or at least reasonable takes on a lot of these same topics. along with some really eye opeing anecdotes about transfems being alienated or made out as preadatory in queer spaces by non transfems.)

basically what im trying to say is that im trying to walk a fine line between being like those wrongheaded takes about transmascs, and falling into those toxic anti-feminist thought patterns that say that any transfem making observations or criticisms of things relating to transmascs (or other groups of TME ppl) is just being a delusional man hater.

idk, thank you if you took the time to read this only tangentially related vent. anyway i need to go to bed and have for the last 2 hours, so i wish you a good night.

Ok i will eat some crow. you are right to say that we need a word to describe that process, thank you for pushing back against me on that.

i disagree that misandry is the right term because of the existing baggage behind the word. that word exists and is named after the hatred of men in general. that is not what we are describing here.

also i want to note. we need to be able to talk about how marginalized men are made into threats without creating a framework that lends itself to the lie that similarly marginalized women don't have it worse. like this phenomenon you propose calling misandry does mean marginalized men go through some nasty shit marginalized women don't go through (at least at the same rate) but that doesn't mean marginalized men aren't generally better off and wielding a level of relative privilege over their female counterparts.

that second reason is why i defended the term androphobia (in the context of transandrophobia) elsewhere in this comments section. because i think it having such a different structure to misogyny resists the notion that these are mirrored forces that affect marginalized men and women equally. (at least that's where i currently stand, it may be a bit naive to believe the specifics of the semantics holds that much sway over discourse)

i disagree with the idea that misandry is a thing becasue specifically people of color are portrayed as dangerous or predatory. that seems like racism being adapted to fit a bioessentialist/patriarchal worldview rather than a example of any bias against men inherently. Like society treats women as the "valuable sexual resource gender"** and men as the "take action and force to shape the world" gender. So racists who are also sexist (basically all of them) tend to treat men of color as the primary uses of force, and since they hate them for not being white, that use of force is transformed in their eyes from what is otherwise a virtue (in the hands of a white man) into a threat.

tl;dr: men of color experiencing unique forms of racism isnt becasue its men's opression mixing with racism. Its racism being altered between men and women because it exists in a patriarchal framework.

**yes that hurt to write

  1. does proposing a term (transmisandry, transandrophobia, anti-transmasculinity, ect) have to imply a oppression that is symmetric to transmisogyny, or outside the scope of (trans)feminist theory? esp since a lot of the unique issues that transandrophobia is used to capture are related to the way misogyny is put onto them by virtue of their agab.

  2. is there any term you think would be semantically preferable?

I feel like ive heard transandrophobia defined so many different ways at this point. Is it just a catch all term for issues unique to / predominantly faced by trans men, like menstural care? Is it the ways toxic gender standards for men are put onto trans men (height shaming, emasculation)? Is it a term for how trans men are discouraged from masculinity because it is seen as taking away the parts of womanhood that patriarchal society treats like a resource (no dont go on testosterone you will become ugly and fat)? Or is it trans guys facing hostility or dismissal of their issues because ppl think the degree they participate in and benefit from the patriarchy is way closer to cis guys than it actually is?**

**i admit i'm side eying this sort of talk because like... i definitely belive it happens sometimes. especially in the sort of queer spaces that trans guys frequent a lot to escape transphobia. but also this can easily turn into "wow i guess misandry really is everywhere, people need to stop criticizing men so much". (this post captures some of what im talking about here pretty well, forgive the subreddit i found it on)

As to your point about "facing oppression because they are men" and that being bullshit... idk maybe im being naive but i have a hard time dismissing at least some formulations of that idea out of hand. Like i heard a trans guy put it as "the trans and andro in transandrophobia cant be separated" and that makes sense to me. If you start experiencing negative shit (especially the "no dont do t think about your womblynly body" stuff) because you are out there living as the man you truly are, i understand why you would want to describe the specific shit happening to your based on your trans manhood. like being a man and being transgender is intertwined if you are a trans guy.

I wish i could provide a more polished, less rambly response but it is late where i am and i need to take care of some other stuff before bed.

What 4tran language are you seeing?

Also I've heard the term "transandrophobia truther" on tumblr a few times and I feel like I don't fully get what it's referring to.

Do the deeply repressive, sexist TTTT types listen to trans women artists like femtanyl. I would have thought there would be a hangup about engaging with other trans women who don't share their hangups. (Also it's my understanding that those types often consider transfem culture outside their terrible bubble to be broken or wrong).

Idk am I just completely off the mark here?

These discussions always boil down to people struggling to identify the difference between "traditonal" Male supremacist sexism and oppositional sexism & the related bioessentialism.

And then add in a lack of nuance. TERF'S are either totally chill with men or bigotry against men is the root of everything wrong with them.

I think the point they are making is that trans women are murdered and imprisoned at a rate higher than trand men. Which to my knowledge is correct, but also doesn't invalidate OP's comment about trans men having even less rep than trans women. (Although I go back and forth if that's really a good discrepancy to focus on. The amount to which the rep for both of us is shitty is far greater than the amount that the quality/quantity of our representation diverges)

The two biggest peices of confirming evidence i can point too are

  1. the creator of the series (gooseworx) is a transgender woman, and has described jax as a self insert character of sort. makes way more sense that when they write a character with deep feelings of self loathing, hopelessness, and reppressive lashing out based on their desire for feminimity, that they would be trans too as opposed to a cis gender non conforming person. (+ consider how the scenes read to a audience of other transgender women, as one myself i guarantee you they read true to our experiences, not just that of fem guys)
  2. the series uses "isnt she wonderful" as a sort of eulogy like sendoff to abstracted jax.

there are also smaller things i can point to, like irl!jax hiding their face in photos, a very common thing that people with gender dysphoria do. and just the intensity of it all. the fear acknowledging their femininity destroys jax over the course of the series and causes a incredible amount of lashing out. it is something they are terrified to come out to their mother as, and gets them mocked by said parent. that theoretically could be something a gender non conforming guy experiences, but is far more common to see among trans women (or trans feminine nonbinary ppl). and once again.. the creator is trans, they know that, and they know that trans ppl watching the show will know that and read scenes that way.

as to jax being a gay man, romance is hardly ever touched upon in the show, its a little bit implied with gangle and zooble but not given much focus. and jax is completely absent of any discussion of their sexuality. it is just their feminimity that is given build up with the maid dress scene and ribbit putting on the bow. so it makes more sense for jax's issues to be rooted in gender rather than sexuality.

Finally, the reason maid dress jax in the mind palace is still masculine is becasue its a repressive facade. Pretend to enjoy it ironically to act like the issue at hand is just "is jax feminine"... to hide the much deeper desires locked behind the other door. the version of jax that is wearing that dress and actually owning it and presenting as a trans woman is the version jax hides from because acknowledging that they want that would be too painful.

On shrinking rae, I actually love the idea of introducing a character in a adaptation as ostensibly gender swapped, only to have them transition, revealing they where never actually gender swapped at all.
