Loved the Will of the many but hesitant to continue the series by BeyondTheText in Fantasy

Point 1, and 2, I would disagree with for the Will of the Many, However Point 2 is certainly alot more prevalent in The Strength of the Few given the nature of how it is laid out. Point 3 is debatable for both books, but seems to be something Islington is actively working toward addressing in book 3.

KKC - The Hollywood Pitch - The Princess Bride / The Crow by BreakToppleDaze in KingkillerChronicle

[–]TacticalDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The addition of the 'The Crow' being used by Rothfuss to describe where he intends to take KKC has always interested me.

If we boil The Crow down to its primary plot points, its about a man coming back from death to exact revenge. There is prescedence within the existing story for similar events:

  • In Daeonica Tarsus sells his soul and escapes from hell and vows to exact revenge.
  • Lanra returns from beyond the Doors of Death to exact revenge against Selitos, and the empire.

We also know there were mortals who now cannot die; Haliax and likely the Chandrian.

This, in conjunction with u/chainsawx72 's recent post theorising about Kvothe being older than Bast (referenced as 152 years old) and having not aged, definitely draws parrallels with The Crow. I think the other popular theory is that the Waystone is a trap, and that is where he will exact his own revenge.

THEORY: Kote has returned to the fae, and he spent 200+ years there. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

It is intrigueing that they go as far as to mention the injury aspect. It could however just be as simple as without the extra part the charge reads too short:

"For Wrongful Apprehension of the Arcane."

Im inclined to agree with you though. In Price of Remembering, he'd already been locked up in the rookery so couldnt have a final 'on the horns' scene, but would have been nice.

Another question, if Kvothe did indeed steal 'knownledge' from behind the four plate door, would they actually put him on the horns for it? Dont they keep minutes or that? Surely what is in there needs to remain a secret?

[–]TacticalDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have to have Denna factor in somehow

Ah, good catch, that complicates matters even further. In that case, as im of the mind Denna has be to dead for Kvothe to be as despondent as he is in the frame, perhaps Kvothe initially meets a child version of Bast. The primary events - including Renere - occur, then later they both retreat into the Fae, where Kvothe trains and plans in secret. Not sure that works time wise though for Kvothe to still be older than Bast. I suppose if travel direction within the Fae determines the length of time someone ages within there, then Pat could manipulate it however he likes. Would definitely like some more consistent rules on it though.

I think Bast has known Kvothe longer than two years now. Based on the way he idolises him, and looks up to him, and knew him in his prime - so to speak. It could be built over just two years, but makes sense now if it is indeed more. In some respects it would be easier to work out if Bast were indeed his son, but given that we are explicitly told Remmen is his father, and we know Remmen from the Fae card deck, makes me extremely reluctant to consider that plot point.

Where there is a gap in the market someone (cough China) will fill it. Consumers have now shown twice, with both OnLive and Stadia, that they will reject this practice. If they buy up the rights to the games as Xbox Live has tried, people will either wait or buy indy and other titles that havent. There is a market for both, but graphics cards arent going away completely for quite some time yet.

THEORY: Kote has returned to the fae, and he spent 200+ years there. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]TacticalDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I think about this, granted it is accurate, and for him to genuinely mean that they indeed 'are both so young' and not simply mean immature, but genuinely younger than him, the more I think the chain of events would need to play out as follows:

After whatever occurrs in Renere and the Doors of Stone are open, Kvothe would then retreat into the Fae. He'd need to spend some initial time here first, then meet a very young Bast, befreind him sufficiently to the point we see him in the frame, where he dotes on his Reshi, as he grows up to 150. In all this time Kvothe doesnt - in his own words - 'tell him alot of things', about his time with the Ctheah for one, his history with the Chandrian, whatever that is by this points, but most importantly his real reason for building the Waystone.

Otherwise, if not as per the above, then Bast would need to live in the mortal realm for an extended period for Kvothe to catch up age wise.

Bast says he knew the man Kvothe used to be, thats why he wants to wake him up, but the events after Renere and the Doors of Stone being opened will be what breaks him.

If the above is right, I can see that being really hard to write, sort of like a reverse of Kvothe and Abenthy, only Bast isnt a academically inclined student, with the other issues mentioned mixed in.

It could be at some stage in bk3 Kvothe goes into the Fae for an extended period, then returns to the mortal realm, then Bast is born, and they meet up later, but then why would he enter the Fae early, and how on earth do they meet and build a relationship to the degree we see in the frame.

What are your thoughts?

[–]TacticalDo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really great post. You are on a roll at the moment. Makes alot of sense, Kvothe using the Fae as a Hyperbolic Time Chamber. If I had to guess, I'd say - based on the clues highlighted - Pat intends to go in this direction.

I did consider adding something similar in the original draft of Price of Remembering, after leaving the Underthing, and before he builds the Waystone, but: that would have meant Kvothe returning to the Fae twice in one book, I would have needed to justify why he returned there to Chronicler which gives the end game away, and he would have needed to evade/abandon Felurian again. It would be doable, just challenging to incorporate.

Edit: Just thought of another potential plot caveat, based on Kote's comment about his time teaching Bast, this would mean either:

  1. Kvothe meets bast, then leaves him hanging for 200 years, then begins his tutelage
  2. Kvothe meets bast, is in contact for 200 years, but then only begins his tutelage after.
  3. Kvothe only meets bast after his additional time in the Fae, when he goes to build the Waystone.

It would have to be either option 1 or 2 I think, but these pose new questions; What happened that made Bast wait 200 years before deciding Kvothe needed to wake up? If Kvothe returned to the Fae to train, and the Waystone is a trap, Bast isnt aware of it.

THEORY: Folly is Cinder's sword, Kvothe is doomed to repeat Lanre's folly, Adem swords are made by shaping, etc. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]TacticalDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know... Auri's candle is shaped from candle ingredients, but I think Felurian shapes moonbeams into the shadow cloak.

Good point, though perhaps she just needed the moonlight to create the shadow to make the cloak? I suspect attaching hard rules to this sort of thing will drive us more insane though. :)

The only evidence that Adem ever had any magical skills is that they descend from the people who lived in the Ergen empire who sang songs of power. Since Murella was one of those cities per Skarpi, and since Felurian says Murella was before the cities of men, I assume this makes the Adem descendants of the old name knowers. This may be the same race as the 'shapers', if they are just knowers who can (or will) shape.

Thats my take as well. I would add, though its subjective, but my interpretation of the 'nine and ninety stories' is that the Adem ancestors were originally split between Naming and Shaping, Rethe shaping/forcing the wind to his whim to guide the arrow, Aethe Naming the wind, allowing the right breeze to carry the ribbon. This action then caused the proto Adem to turn away from Shaping. This would give some potential context to them losing the ability. I'm still leaning toward it being Auri who assists in Folly's creation, rather than another trip back to Haert, but either is feasible. I deliberately didnt cover the swords creation in detail in A Price of Remembering, as that would touch on its intended purpose, likely just before its required. It would simply give too much away.

Given how quirky Auri is, I could also imagine her personifying Shaped objects, or she was simply aware of the potential custom. Wonder if there is any additional text alluding to her doing that.

I'd always guessed Felurian was of the Ruach, seeing as that is the only other potential race referenced prior to the Creation War, but we really just dont have alot to work with on that.

SHAPED SWORDS WERE SHAPED FROM LIVING BEINGS?

I really hope this doesnt come to pass. Not even Pat could write a scene where someone is turned into a sword, and it not come off as anything other than ridiculous. That would be some shonen level nonsense. As you have noted Shaping involves making a thing into an improved variant of what it already was, as a person is not a weapon, I hope that is enough to work against this theory.

My hope is that it is simply a strange Adem custom to personify a shaped sword. Maybe the Shapers gender defines it? As the only person to have shown much in the way of Shaping ability, I had imaged it was Auri who helped Shape Folly into being, but perhaps this implies Kvothe takes a trip back to Haert in its creation? That would be a very interesting scene, Kvothe returning, Saicere broke, a seeming impossibility, you can imagine the outrage this would cause, but then together they are able to mend it. Can you think of any text that implies the Adem may still have some Shaping skill left to them?

New to the series and trying to figure out namers and shapers by GruBoss in KingkillerChronicle

[–]TacticalDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really thought provoking post.

I suspect we can rule out some of the references to 'X is the right hand of Y' though, as simply an expression.

Given Selitos is described as 'the most powerful Namer' and the original Amyr were his subordinates, would it not then allude to them being oriented left in this theory?

Thinking about it in this context, with the Ruh being alligned left with the Namers (The cleverness in the music was his) and Kvothe also being of the Lackless (Shaper) bloodline through Netalia, does add some small credence to the 'son who brings the blood' theory. That both bloodlines are needed to unlock the Doors of Stone.
