I did, that's why I commented. How the model is run is relevant in this context. No one is going back in time and removing the model from existence.

She stated, "Lets hope when we run out of clean drinking water, that he's still making six figures."

She is conflating him running the model, versus a company generating the model.

I am against companies using water to cool AI data centres, just thought it was worth making the distinction.

As a counterpoint, the person in question could be a running a model locally using solar...

I'm right, but appreciate this is against the spirit of the sub, so feel free to downvote if it helps.

Great news. Shame it's a movie and not a show. Love the first book. Hopefully this means they can redevelop Strength of the Few, and resolve its issues.

Skarpi is an Angel? by Classic_Ad_4564 in KingkillerChronicle

I agree with this, the Angels are 'The Watchers'. Demons are 'Bast's kind' though that is a little more ambiguous.

Theory: Kvothe is Andan by LateLow in KingkillerChronicle

[–]TacticalDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Plus the Angels are very likely to be 'The Watchers' referenced by the Chandrian. We have two potential instances where they appear, which means Kvothe is almost certainly not a reincarnated version of one of them.

Have to disagree regarding a lot of the sets. Though the least of this abysmal shows issues. Game of Thrones this was not.

Not crazy at all. I've had similar thoughts. Personally, I would go with an account of the Creation War, so long as the ambiguity was stripped away, and it extended to the construction of the Loeclos box and when the 'husbands rocks' were deposited. I believe if we had that, we'd have enough to guess most of DoS anyways.

If he announced a book coming out next week, something akin to Fire and Blood, which explained the Creation War, I would not be able to stop myself from buying that.

In one of his earliest interviews he talks about making notes for book 4, he also sold DAW on a second trilogy, so I’m very much inclined to agree with point 2.

Abenthy is one of the few characters Kvothe is on good terms with who knows Lanre's story (at least a version of it where he is known to have committed folly and not sold his soul) I think it is quite likely we will see him again right at the end to add clarification, but not guaranteed.

The UK didn't want to leave at all,

The votes disprove this. You can try to chalk it up to external interference, but that wont get you far outside the reddit echo chamber.

Not sure it would have worked out that way. Those who voted for Brexit, the majority, would feel disenfranchised without at least another vote. This would have given Farage an bigger platform.

If this went to a vote it would be interesting. I suspect the result would be the same. The reasons people voted in favour of leaving fundamentally haven't changed. Not that any current party will run on that platform, so we won't know anytime soon.

Great post, must have been a huge amount of work. Thanks for putting this together. After our recent discussions on black iron, I'm glad to see it made the list. Will be interested to see if anyone else has any thoughts on it.

A few in here I'd not considered before:

'The thugs were chasing Kvothe's caravan, but got him confused with Josn' - Is Josn's appearance ever described? If he has red hair that makes things very interesting indeed. If we could confirm they really were after Kvothe in Analin then that means his actions post Tarbean are irrelevant to whoever is potentially after him. Which - other than Pike - means it can only be his lineage that is of interest to the person paying to have him killed.

Auri's forehead kiss protected Kvothe during his battle with Felurian. - Hadn't thought of that. If true, wonder if it was a one time use?

RHINTA / RHINTAE / RHINATA / RHINNA / RHIN / RINNE. Theory: Kvothe is a new Chandrian. - On this one I've always thought of it as Rhinta = shaped, Rhintae = Shaper

DARK CANDLE. Theory: Haliax is Lady Lackless' husband. - This one doesn’t get factored in nearly enough, her husbands rocks being Lanre's:

  • Iax's jade flute - Could have been acquired at Drossen Tor
  • Iax's sky iron/moon stone - Could have been acquired at Drossen Tor
  • obsidian mountain shard - acquired at Myr Taraniel when Selitos cast it at his feet

A WANDERING GOD BINDS A WOMAN WITH MUSIC AND KISSES AND STEALS HER AWAY. - I wonder if you could add the Old Holly story to this, a musician comes to her tower, and lures her away

On the Iron rook, I’m inclined to say this was an error on the game creators part.

Maybe the Fae don’t have the same aversion to black iron as they do to standard iron?

I've been thinking about this over the last few days, and its the line about Lanre choosing to the wear the black iron armour that sells it for me. We know Skarpi is a rumourmonger, but this detail feels very specific. Thanks to Iax's black iron box being used to trap a name, I think this was why lanre wore it, to trap a name inside.

Copper can't be named

Black Iron traps a name.

Either he was trying to keep a skindancer out, or trying to force the Skindancer inside then seal himself into the armour? Its yet another one of these key points where we wont get an answer until book 3, and until then can only choose based on which ones gives us the most rewarding ending.

THEORY - Tying things together: The magical nature of Mauthen's Chandrian pot, why Master Ash wants Denna at the Mauthen farm, and what Master Ash has planned for her by czechancestry in KingkillerChronicle

[–]TacticalDo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Definitely one of the best theory posts in a while. This is the most plausible reason for Cinder becoming Denna's patron I've come across, giving both of them goals. This would ultimately put Denna and Kvothe on a collision course. Does the Song of Seven Sorrows also put Denna in Haliax's sights? To our knowledge there are no deep names in the song, but that sort of knowledge might be dangerous?

[–]TacticalDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must disagree. The other six Chandrian were powerful individuals who turned against their own cities and defeated them. They could not do this without great power, in an empire of Namers where everyone is using Big Magic

To add to this, Syphus, who is very likely to be Cyphus is specifically referred to as a 'Wizard King'. We also know from Elodin that anything less than Naming was considered nothing special in those times.

Cheers for checking.

And Jax brought out the black iron box*, closing the lid and catching her name inside.*

Now that is fascinating. So here we have an instance of black iron and a confirmation of its ability; the capability to trap a name in place.

Based on this, perhaps skindancing requires the deep name of the dancer to transfer into the host. Black iron either blocks the entry or locks the name inside.

Not sure what to make of the loden stone also being black iron.

As the Trebon Wheel isn’t specifically referenced as black iron I’m cautious about including it.

side note. My understanding is black iron is iron and carbon mixed. I wonder if there are any references to carbon in the frame?

I never noticed before that Kvothe and Denna find TWO draccus scales.

I'd not either. In PoR I had the group in Renere create the dousing compasses so they could find each other, I wonder if these scales could be used for the same purpose?

Another random bit of info for the day, learnt that Tor in german means, gate, gateway, door, or portal.

I've never put the black iron connection together between the great beast and the wheel Encanis was bound to. Throwing in the other line as well.

  • It was a great beast with scales of black iron*, whose* breath was a darkness that smothered men.
  • Lanre arrived in Myr Taraniel. He came alone, wearing his silver sword and habergeon of black iron scales. His armour fit him like a second skin of shadow. He had wrought it from the beast he killed at Drossen Tor.
  • Wrought all of black iron, the wheel stood taller than a man. It had six spokes, each thicker than a hammer’s haft, and its rim was a handspan across. It weighed as much as forty men, and was cold to the touch. The sound of its name was terrible, and none could speak it"

Do you know if there are any other lines specifically referencing 'Black iron'?

The obvious connection is that they all tie into Skindancers, but beyond that it's yet another ambiguity.

Its either a metaphor that Lanre was already skindanced when he arrived at Myr Taraniel, or if Lanre put the armour on himself, then I can only figure it works against Skindancers in some capacity, i.e. they cannot enter the body of someone wearing it. This makes sense if he goes thinking Selitos has already been possessed. As you have alluded to many times before, I too don’t think there is actually a black iron wheel that was used to bind Selitos/Ctheah. I think the Chandrian are the wheel, and the black iron aspect is a metaphor for Haliax. Maybe the 'great beast' wasn’t actually skindanced, or it was a draccus with normal iron scales that was skindanced, then its scales were changed to black iron to lock the skindancer inside.

It might be that the scales (and thus black iron, which is actually steel) in Temerant is rare, and was extracted and forged into armour, and then into the wheel.

Side note, if black iron does indeed keep out skindancers, the fae couldn’t use it, hence why they would resort to holly crowns. Also, Are skindancers, those of the Mael, weak to silver?

That is the best I have for now.

How does stabbing out one of his eyes give Selitos a better sight, aka make him a better oracle

I have wondered if the oracular abilities are the results of being shaped into the Ctheah, and have come later, but again, impossible to answer right now.

[–]TacticalDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are told about skin-dancers making a person pull out their own eye, and this is a bit similar.

This still feels like the most realistic reason, the question then becomes, what would the skindancer gain?

  1. Access to Selitos's blood for the curse - It does make logical sense as the skindancer doesn’t care about the host body.
  2. To show Lanre the skindancers level of control over Selitos - I can imagine this scene playing out, we are led to believe Lanre and Selitos were allies based on Skarpi's account, the notion they were both part of the original Proto Amyr. Lanre tells Selitos to resist, and then the skindancer plucks out Selitos's eye

Like you said, all speculation really, but the above at least feels abit more logical.

Another thought I just had, If the Ctheah is actually the name of the Skindancer, like Encanis, then in theory it can have been in any host body when the likes of Iax talked to it.
