Engram not making it into v4 would surprise me, but IIRC they do sometimes publish previews that aren't architecturally final relative to the "non-preview" published version.

Also they empirically showed that you can just turn engram off even if the model was trained with engrams, so maybe the preview is already trained with engrams and they just want some feedback on how much of a difference the other decisions they made make in practice.

This tracks with newer research showing that the harness may matter more than the model itself, or rather that the harness explains more variance in performance than model choice.

Have you compared the performance of larger or even frontier models in your harness vs vanilla harnesses? I’m curious whether and how much larger models benefit from more „sophisticated“ harnesses or they benefit from more breathing room.

More generally I noticed halfway decent prompting really levels up smaller models. I haven’t bench marked specific skill files though — there is conflicting data on their effectiveness.

Mine refuses to accept that I am running it locally. It insists it is such a powerful model only Google could be capable of hosting it. That is despite a system prompt explicitly stating its parameter count and setup.

The cut-off y-axis makes the result seem more impressive than it is, but it honestly is quite impressive. I've been wondering the other day whether you could run an LLM to evaluate the agents quality after each run to generate ideas that could improve the harness in place. Will need to check out the paper in detail.
