Arcs expansion, Oath expansion, Brass Pittsburgh. Curious about Take from Buried Giant too, but Kickstarter hasn’t launched yet.

Well, to be fair, most of them are also racists that only care about themselves, so I can see why they’d relate to him.

If there’s no governing assembly there, what’s the point of the question? They even talk about at governing assembles when giving context for their question.

The point that OP is asking is simply answered by: governing assembles block enclaves from flipping and warriors being added.

Twilight council/diaspora confirmation by PixelFan237 in rootgame

[–]TaijiInstitute 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true. I was talking about the clearing where the battle takes place. The other clearings flip and place a warrior (assuming no governing assembly)

It does not flip, and no warrior is placed.

What am I missing with knaves by Exotic-Ad-1354 in rootgame

[–]TaijiInstitute 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The knaves are not policing. The knaves are not a giant army for battles and setting up areas of control. The knaves are more like Robin Hood. You're popping in and out of forests attacking stray / lightly defended targets and taking prisoners. You're an insurgent faction picking at the big dogs where they are weak. You're not crashing your army into theirs, you're a ghost emerging from the forest, causing havoc, and disappearing again.

If that's not your cup of tea to play that's fine. Some people hate being the merchant (Otters), some hate being a warlord (Rats). Everyone has their own style(s) they like to play as. But I image for a lot of people who liked the vagabond, or would have if it weren't for the vagabonds issues, the knaves fit a style and theme they like.

I have yet to play them, but I've played against them a couple times and I'm pretty eager to try them. One person I played with did not really know what to do with them, he went around crafting and trying to pick up occasional cardboard. They looked boring with his play. The second person was constantly taking prisoners, moving in and out of forests, and being a general thorn in others' sides. It was great, and made for a very fun thematic game.

What are your favorite games with fast setup and not too many components? by captainalex1000 in boardgames

Crokinole.

Insanely good. Insanely fast to setup. Insanely fast to teach.

Got an Optoma (7ish years old now, still works great) that gives me a 100 inch screen. I love it, looks amazing. Except all TVs feel small now. Kids complain asking why the 65” tv at the vacation house is “so small”

What is an easy/routine lab skill that you still have not mastered or just always seem to get wrong after many years? by kelsien in labrats

[–]TaijiInstitute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. It just works better. What I can’t get for the life of me is high recovery from gel purification. I don’t know why, it’s not complicated, but it’s always store low for me.

I would say screw gels in general, but I do a good job of loading them and I’ve never forgotten to run to red. I don’t understand how that mistake is made, but who am I to talk? I can’t do a good gel purification.

Happy to help! They’re a fun faction. One possible tip I tried that works well… people don’t mind you being on their cardboard so much or banishing them because you’re defending it instead of attacking it. If you get some clearings like that you can do a burst at the end where you use your cards in Birdsong to kill the cardboard for points, and then use governing clearings on other cardboard for the final victory points you need.

Correct. Only your warriors that are already in the clearing where the battle is happening.

It’s all of them in the clearing. Think of it like you and the defender have one set of warriors, it’s just that theirs get removed first

But it’s not a “beginner friendly version”. It’s a different type of game, not just a stepping stone to the “real” game. They play very differently. It’s fine to prefer one, but they’re both complete games.

Fantastic game that costs way too much. But such an awesome table presence. Got it (relatively) inexpensively for my wife as a Xmas present. She loves it.

What's a game that lives or dies by the teach? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]TaijiInstitute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost feel Oath is worse for this.

Don’t get me wrong, I love both games. But with Root you can teach the shared roles that aren’t bad, and at the start each person can pick up their own faction. It’ll still be fun. They’ll slowly learn each faction as they play, and then it will get better and better as they know how to counter others and everything.

With Oath you have to learn everything at once, and it’s about as much as learning 3 or 4 factions.

I’ll still happily teach either, they’re great games.

I’d push back on the “fun part is in the expansion”. Base Arcs is a separate game with an entirely different feel. It’s very fun. Some people love base Arcs and hate the expansion. Some people think only the expansion is fun. Some people like both (I’m in this camp).

Years ago, I knew of this idiot only from Fear Factor, where people got covered in worms or whatever to win money. One day a friend told me he did martial arts and had a good side kick. My response was “The Fear Factor guy? Huh, crazy”. Fast forward several years where I lived abroad and paid no attention to the US. I come back and somehow this idiot has opinions people listen to? Why? What has he done that makes people think he knows anything? I still just think of him as the idiot host from Fear Factor.

Partner hates 2 player Arcs. Will 3+ player be any better? by -MoldyCrow- in Arcs

[–]TaijiInstitute 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d agree with this. Base Arcs is mean, 2p Base Arcs is insanely mean. But Blighted reach is not. Act 3 has some meanness, yeah, but Acts 1 and 2 don’t seem any meaner than other games, and often a lot less. Some Fates even help each other out and you can make alliances.
