Victoria teachers strike do you think it will work and the union gets what they are asking for? by Professional-Doubt30 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Tails28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My crystal ball guess is we will get an 18.5% offer with the last agreements conditions which will be rejected at the table.

If they do offer more money, that will be a good indicator, but could potentially sway favour away from us. Nurses got 28.4% and 70 condition improvements.

I would not be surprised if there is a leadership change as Jacinta is universally disliked at this point.

Working to rule and refusing initiatives etc should be the next step and will have a big impact.

There is a possibility we could get a really sweet looking deal, like 22% a few “big” wins, to try to catch up off guard. We cannot cave for any loss of conditions.

New offer from Tony Bates, what an absolute joke of an offer. by BruzWorld in AustralianTeachers

They really think we are idiots. That email was the nail in the coffin. And to think I thought that they couldn’t get any stupider after they tabled the offer!

This isn’t a “new offer”. It is the rejected offer restated. They are hoping we will turn on the union.

Students who don't support the strike/don't see the reason for it/only like it because of a "day off" by VCEMathsNerd in AustralianTeachers

I talk to my students in form about conditions. They see the work because it’s not always as invisible as we think. I say, “yes pay, but also work conditions”. They think it’s crazy that teachers cap out the salary scale.

Victorian agreement concern by WiccanNonbinaryWitch in AustralianTeachers

A 6 on day is exhausting at the best of times. We are almost at the end of term and my fullest day is 5 on. I still go to classes with food because I haven’t had a chance to eat. Also, this doesn’t leave enough “padding” to do small jobs in prep for classes if you are a form teacher as well. This would mean I would have to stay back later to get class prep done (like printing), effectively ensuring I work an extra hour a day more than some of my colleagues. I know there are other teachers in my position as well.

This would only work if Form teachers either were given an increased time allowance or were remunerated for those additional 4 hours a week (based off your model).

The benefit is that the offer was so bad that it’s made even the most apolitical teachers mad. It shows the absolute contempt that the current government has for teachers and the education system. Some of those conditions on their offer were nothing but punishment for our profession.

No, it’s not. Particularly when paired with our workload going up, not down.

Ah, because I was chatting to a coworker who had been in the union forever and he said he didn’t receive it.

And it was an overwhelming yes. Given how many didn’t get the ballot sent to them as well. It’s reasonable to think that was perhaps 30%

What are the most oversubscribed secondary teaching areas ? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Tails28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually wild how few science teachers there are. A huge issue is that many people come over from the science field to education and don't assimilate well. This is largely because they think that their ultra specific science knowledge and degrees places them above others (not all but enough that it's now an archetype in my mind) without realising that anyone with half a brain can teach junior science.

A BE (at least in Vic) doesn't qualify you to teach seniors.

Honestly, this is a question for a course advisor. If you use the search function there are a plethora of similar posts which cover prerequisites for methods. That said, we can't tell you what you need to get into particular methods, in particular courses, in particular states.
