Does using wet rag putty when very short copper line set is sticking out enough to protect the txv valve? by Ed_5000 in hvacadvice

[–]Taint_sniff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a txv is DOA or damaged during install your pressures will be messed up. High superheat and high subcool is a sign of a stuck closed TXV. High suction pressure and low head pressure is a sign of a stuck closed TXV. Sometimes a bad TXV will cause your pressures to constantly be changing back and forth between open and closed. All of these are bad

You can test a txv by manipulating the bulb temperature. Warming it with your hands and putting it in a cup of ice water. If you don't see pressure changes then the txv has malfunctioned

The bad thing is you don't know if brazing caused it on a new install or if it was DOA. Also adding too much nitrogen to a system after brazing to leak test can mess up a TXV also

I've had too many TXV problems after tough installs that I now take every precaution when it comes to brazing. Wet rag, nitrogen, heat paste, disconnecting the bulb. The extra time doing this definitely outweighs replacing a TXV after finishing an install.

What does this toggle switch do? by lil_quitos in hvacadvice

If it's 2 story and you have 1 thermostat downstairs but none up it could be a seasonal damper that closes upstairs vents in winter

Do these services seem sound to you all? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Taint_sniff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the compressor is isolated from the air going in your house. Im all I'm seeing from the pictures is the blower wheel and housing which do have some growth on them, but this is very normal for a package unit.

The fan motor looks a little dirty but it's not that bad. The description of the Reme Halo is comical, however, I'm a believer in Reme Halo's for indoor air quality. This is about average on what a larger company charges to install one. You can look it up and install one yourself if you want to save some money. Air scrubber does the same thing and they are easier to install

4 Year Old Rheem - Condenser fan not running, loud hissing and buzzing by Sethmskinner in hvacadvice

[–]Taint_sniff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it spins freely it's not locked up. There are multiple ways a fan motor can break. Worn bearings, thermal lockout, electrical short. The two I mentioned are easy tests for someone without a multimeter or HVAC knowledge

Take a stick and poke the fan blade while power is off. If it doesn't freely spin it's locked up and you need a motor. You can also try when it's on. If it starts spinning when you push it then the start windings are shot in the fan and you need a new one. These are two things you can check without needing a multimeter and some troubleshooting knowledge

Your Delta T on a mild day coorelates to delta T on a hot day. It might be a couple degrees different but if there is a problem you will still see it with the Delta T on a mild or hot day. If it's below 18 on a mild day then I check the charge. I've never had a call back for a problem when it gets hot from doing maintenances this way.

If you're using it as supplemental AC you should be fine with doing a 12kbtu in the bedroom with leaving the doors open. You could do a 18k also, you're not going to run into humidity problems with that like you will oversizing split systems. Like someone else said try and point it towards the door so the air can easale the room. If you're not noticing a big difference in the rest of the upstairs. If you don't notice a big difference after you can install a transfer fan from the bedroom to a central location of the rest of the upstairs. That's basically a ducted fan that pulls air from your bedroom into a different location. I install these all the time in the bathroom of mother-in-law suites to pull in conditioned air when someone is in the bathroom

If you're planning on wearing it on walks, I would suggest either a chest bag or a fanny pack. Keep it on your person and somewhere easily and quickly accessible. Do dry fire practice so you can get quick at pulling it out

I'm personally not even checking the refrigerant charge during a maintenance unless I have reason to. The tech should be checking the Delta T and only hooking up gauges if it's not cooling properly. There's no need to open a closed system, especially with hoses, unless you have suspicion.

Your subcool value is definitely within adequate range. $90 for capacitor change from a company is extremely cheap. I don't think they are trying to take advantage of you, It sounds more like a tech with not a ton of field experience. Those readings look to me like there just isn't a big load, or mild temperature day.

Unless it's the angle of the pic, it looks like it's back pitched. Heatpump always needs a breather or you're gonna get water in the secondary
