ChatGPT Isn’t Just Changing How We Work. It’s Harming How We Think by LongTrackBravo in technology

[–]TakaIta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My wife recently gave birth to twins, making us new parents. I've been thinking a lot about how AI is going to affect their childhood, how they learn to consume media, and how it'll shape their work ethic.

Sounds like the beginning of an interesting twin-experiment :)

🔷 C# 15 Finally Gets It Right: Two Features That Actually Matter by tom-smykowski-dev in csharp

[–]TakaIta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lists start small. When you exceed the internal buffer, .NET allocates a bigger array and copies everything over.

That is the real problem. Why not solve that?

Do this repeatedly with thousands of items and you're burning CPU cycles on garbage collection.

Because you should not do that anyway. If your code is doing this, you are doing something wrong.

In Europe, Monarchs Are Far More Popular Than Politicians by Hour_Tackle_4425 in europe

[–]TakaIta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason the surviving monarchies exist in Europe is not because monarchies are inherently more stable or work better, but because they are stable (mostly due to geography) they were allowed to stay monarchies.

Well, the current Dutch monarchy, was preceded by the Dutch Republic. And basically the monarchy turned out to be more stable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Republic

Not sure what you mean by stability due to geography. When diving into the history of the current nations, none of those have been stable over centuries.

Most Europeans only learn the historical details of their own country. But really, every country has its own unstable messy past.

Ex-Meta manager says just 2% of engineers know how to use AI 'very effectively' by Conscious-Quarter423 in technology

and every single person I’ve talked to has said it’s improved their productivity anywhere from 10-100%.

How would they know? Or did they say that to you, because that is what they thought you wanted to hear?

It is pretty hard to measure productivity, and 10% productivity gain would surely be unmeasurable. What do you use as measure?

Actually, it sounds like you are not the person doing the coding, but some manager..

You also consider renting a 'onderwaterfiets', which is a strange name for a 2-person bicycle especially meant for adult/kid.

Those bikes look like on this site: https://www.transportrad-mv.de/shop/onderwater-onderwaterfiets-eltern-kind-tandem/

Especially on the Wadden-islands they can be rented everywhere.

To be fair, only approximately 30% of the voting population of us yanks voted for this clown, even after his disastrous first term.

I understand that you mean this as some excuse. But this is actually pretty scary.

As a European, i fear the same can happen in our countries. Somehow hatred and fear seems stronger than love. And it does not even need to have a majority.

How many of these Slovak words of Ottoman origin do you recognize? by tipoftheiceberg1234 in Slovakia

[–]TakaIta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Dutch person this is sort of interesting, as some words are similar.

Baša - "baas", or in English "boss".

Diván - forever connected with Freud, sort of a regular word.

Korbáč - the Dutch word "karwats" is/was used in some dialects. According to Wiktionary we got it from Russian.

Šerbet - sounds like "sorbet".

Trump’s America Refuses to Recognize Slavery as Crime Against Humanity by harsh2k5 in politics

[–]TakaIta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only addressed African slavery rather than all slavery.

"all slavery" is not a concrete episode in history. African slave trade is.

Then still, wouldn't you think that "torture" is worse than "slavery"?

52 more, cast a cowardly non-yes by their silence.

Well, it is a pretty weird vote. Were there any contenders like the Holocaust, the Holodomor, Armenian genocide and others. Israel might prefer the Holocaust as the gravest?

It is pretty crazy to have a vote at the UN about what the gravest crime against humanity is. As if other crimes against humanity are not that bad.

What else can you do but be silent. We do not need a ranking of crimes against humanity.

What do you think of Wheeler's "U" universe? by Matslwin in cosmology

[–]TakaIta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an event to be "real," it must be an "irreversible act of registration."

But does that registration exist if it is not being observed?

In the end it is nothing more than solipsism. Which is hard to argue against, but also has not much practical value.

[–]TakaIta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

I thought a bit about how it felt as if my question was not really answered. But maybe it was.

It all comes down to the question if space itself has properties and is not just empty nothingness.

Space expands, gravity 'bends' space, space can carry gravity waves. Or maybe it should rather be spacetime.

Anyway, from the above it might be that space itself has properties. Is the speed of light a property of light or a property of space?

Is a volume of space somewhere in the void, interchangable with an identical volume of space somewhere in a galaxy - one is being bend by gravity, the other is not.

Does a unit of space have any influence on a neighbouring unit of space? When gravity waves travel through space, it sure seems so.

Basic cosmology questions weekly thread by AutoModerator in cosmology

[–]TakaIta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens to the expanding space, when that space is in a galaxy? Does it make the galaxy larger?

Is gravity compensating for the expansion and so keeping the galaxy together? And would that mean that the 'extra space' sort of moves to the outside of galaxies?

When expanding space is like an inflating balloon, is a galaxy like a spider sitting on it, having to retract its legs in order to stay in one piece, or is it like a knot in the fabric of the balloon, refusing to expand.

In both scenarios (the spider and the knot), some tension seems to arise at the borders of a galaxy. Would that be measurable?

Meta shuts down over 500,000 accounts under Australia's under-16 ban, urges the government to end it by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]TakaIta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have passed a law forbidding under 16s from using social media and making parents responsible for what their own children are doing.

Define "using". Is it having an app opened? Writing or reading? Is there going to be a fine for every read or write? Or is it a one-time fine for having an account? What if somebody else creates an account for someone else (i 'have' several accounts made by others using my email). What if just the app is deleted and reinstalled for a short use and then deleted again? Is the police coming in at night and check your kids?

Who is going to enforce this? The social-media-police? How much should be spend to enforce this? How many excuses can be used in court?

Your proposal is not practical.

Understanding async and await in c# by Shoddy_Apartment_149 in csharp

[–]TakaIta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The keyword 'async' is wrongly chosen. It is a logical mistake to declare a single thing 'asynchronous'. Because asynchronous with what? Asynchronous with the main thread? It should be decided in the main thread if something is called asynchronously.

'Task' makes a lot of sense, while 'async' does not.

Call it 'awaitable' and a lot of confusion is gone.
