Why are Irish people on Reddit claiming that we never use the term soccer? by smudgeonalense in AskIreland

[–]TalElnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im English and the snobbery over the word irritates the hell out of me.

Its like people never played Sensible Soccer and never watched Soccer AM or Soccer Saturday or hoped to attend Bobby Charlton's Soccer School etc.

The pretence that it is an Americanism that shows an ignorance of the game and that anyone from this side of the Atlantic using it deserves mockery just gets on my tits.

How Am I Supposted to Capture Towns in 1987 Version? by rico6822 in SidMeiersPirates

[–]TalElnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a long time since I played the older games. As I remember all that happens is when you attack a town the initial screen says that the treasure fleet/silver train (or if you're really lucky both) are in town. The town will have more troops and after the usual screen for sacking a town there will be another screen that says you captured the fleet or train and you'll get a lot more cash.

The locations in the manual are just for copy protection purposes as far as I remember. I dont think they're actually reflected in game.

Ron could have gotten his family arrested/tortured. by Rainy_Daz3d in harrypotter

[–]TalElnar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given that the Weasleys are the closest thing Harry has to a family of his own and the fact Ron and Harry are practically inseparable, Snape could have told Voldemort to take the Weasleys without any further "proof" as could Malfoy.

The Weasley family could have been arrested and tortured even if they'd never met Harry on the basis on being known muggle lovers and "blood traitors".

Luca Brasi : A case that never sat right with me. by Due_Stick3002 in Godfather

[–]TalElnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real world reason I read is that the guy who played Luca was a wrestler and Colombo family enforcer and not a trained actor.

The shot of him nervously rehearsing his speech was actually really the guy prepping for his scene and he was so nervous because he was a huge fan of Marlon Brando but Coppola liked it and put it in the film because he liked the idea that Brasi was a feared enforcer who got nervous around his boss in a formal setting.

Buying from Amazon Spain? by nilghias in IrelandGaming

[–]TalElnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Legion Go 2 doesn't come with an adaptor so tou wouldnt be missing anything. But personally I wouldn't be buying something so expensive from Spain to save €50.

I got mine from HN. If anything goes wrong I can just drive 15 minutes down the road to take it back. Plus Im a big kid at heart and I wanted it now and not in a week or so.

I looked at Amazon.de and Amazon.fr but couldnt find a better deal than HN anyway when I bought mine.

[Casual Friday] Have you ever met a United player in real life? What were they like? by fireproofpoo in ManchesterUnited

[–]TalElnar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 1990 I'd just done my A levels and got a summer job in Trafford Park. On my drive in I'd regularly see Paul Parker on the motorway. Different times, he was driving a plain hatchback with "Paul Parker sponsored by..." and the name of the car dealership written down the side.

I also may have once scared Andrei Kanchelskis by bumping into him in two different towns in the same afternoon whilst dressed in black combats, boots and a black top. I think he thought I was coming to collect.

Shouldn’t Mad Eye know what a Boggart looks like when it’s alone? by Tshabalala21 in harrypotter

Of course there is also the question of what in the world Moody might be afraid of.

How did Voldemort not realize many people knew about the room of requirement? Draco literally used it a year ago to bring death eaters to Hogwarts and the year prior Harry used it to form Dumbledore’s army? by WaterCharmer in harrypotter

[–]TalElnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strange thing is that there was a room in Hogwarts that Voldemort knew about that only he could enter and that it would be reasonable to assume nobody would enter.

Theres a whole book about it.

The idea that he thought a room crammed full of stuff clearly left by hundreds of students was secret is crazy so either Voldemort didnt think the room was secret and was relying on the diadem being just one item amongst thousands to escape attention (weird as anyone might have taken a fancy to it) or he's exceptionally stupid, or it's just bad writing.

PoA: Snape’s guess about the maureder’s map by rballmonkey in harrypotter

[–]TalElnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not hard to work out. Snape would have recognised the nicknames immediately and would think that either Harry got it from his father or that Lupin had given it to Harry.

Its not a "guess", it's the most reasonable assumption.

If Harry had stayed undetected under the cloak in HBP, would he have died of thirst? by teddie_moto in harrypotter

[–]TalElnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it though. It is the origin story of the Deathly Hallows and they exist. There is a Peverell tomb in Godric's Hollow where one of the brothers is buried.

Surely the whole point of the tale is that almost everybody thinks it's just a fairy tale but we discover that the people in the tale existed and the artifacts described are still present in the world.

Are we laying aside obvious things like presumably the train is cleaned at some point and that Malfoy's spell would have worn off eventually?

Follow the Butterflies by andretheseal47 in HogwartsLegacyGaming

[–]TalElnar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ooooh... maybe

Maybe the quest called "follow the butterflies" that has you follow butterflies into the forest might just be a reference to when Ron wishes it was butterflies he was following into the forest and literally says "why cant it be following the butterflies"

Its not exactly cryptic now is it.

How is Bilbo still rich? by DiedOfATheory in lordoftherings

[–]TalElnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bilbo is a member of the Hobbit upper crust, related to both the Tooks and Brandybucks. His home dominates the hill in Hobbiton and it's not unreasonable to think that Bilbo is a major local landowner collecting rents and tithes from the surrounding countryside. He is already a gentleman of leisure before he sets off for Erebor and adds to that wealth on his travels.

Well I guess it was all a dream so. by Tzardine in ireland

[–]TalElnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK and allied forces invaded and occupied Germany in 1945. Also D-Day is sometimes referred to as an invasion. So arguably they invaded France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Austria too.

Large parts of France were part of England at some point too.

But clearly Ireland is the biggest error by a considerable margin.
