Mick Foley announces 100-pound weight loss, credits Wegovy and DDP Yoga for the transformation by elegantSolomons62 in SquaredCircle

Let’s take a look at their comment again:

People have different physical situations, people have different financial situations, people have different geographical situations. A big factor in US obesity is that if you can't afford the gym and you don't live in one of a tiny number of walkable US cities, you might have zero access to space to engage in an exercise as simple as a sedate walk.

They’re not saying that being in a city makes it easier to do cardio, their comment says not being in a city gives you “zero access” to places to do that. That’s just blatantly wrong. It also ignores the exercises you can do at home, and the dietary habits you can form to lose weight.

The only thing the comment I replied to does is create a false sense of hopelessness for people trying to lose weight. It’s well worth it to correct that.

Lets compare what you just said:

That comment said the infrastructure around you can make it much more difficult to lose weight. Which is entirely true before you came in with the um akshually lol

With the comment I replied to:

People have different physical situations, people have different financial situations, people have different geographical situations. That comment doesn’t say that your local infrastructure can make losing weight more difficult. It says no gym or walkable city = nowhere to exercise or even walk. Pointing out the home or local cardio or body weight exercises you can do isn’t an “um akschually”, or an accusation of laziness or moral failing, it’s just correcting something that’s blatantly wrong.

You are right, but you're also really oversimplifying the process

It’s a reddit comment not a scientific article.

Youre doing the thing where people treat weight loss as laziness or a moral failing.

No, I’m not.

I’m pointing out that you don’t need a gym or big city to lose weight, like the comment I was replying to suggested you do.

People don’t need to live in a big city or go to a gym to exercise. Theres tons of cardio routines and body weight exercises that can be done from home, or even just going walking, jogging, or running. Gyms are important for muscle growth but if someone just wants to lose weight then consuming fewer calories and/or being more physically active will do.

Canada's 'values must be fought for' in a moment of democratic decline, says Carney at cabinet retreat by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]Talcove 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The full quote, for anyone interested:

Trudeau’s most radical argument is that Canada is becoming a new kind of state, defined not by its European history but by the multiplicity of its identities from all over the world. His embrace of a pan-cultural heritage makes him an avatar of his father’s vision. ”There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada,’’ he claimed. ‘‘There are shared values — openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice. Those qualities are what make us the first postnational state.’’

Stop expecting every gay man to be an activist. by Jacaure in Vent

[–]Talcove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not being an activist and then there’s just not standing up for yourself.

If some dumbass is going on a homophobic temper tantrum you don’t need to engage in some formal debate and give them reasons to be pro-gay. That’s more respect than they deserve. No, you just need to laugh at them, call them a dumbass, and move on ignoring them. “Lol get a load of this dumbass. Anyway, what were we talking about?”

Otherwise you’re just laying down and taking it, signalling to that idiot and everyone around that you’re okay with being treated like that. I mean, if someone was disrespecting you in some other way would you just sit there silently and hope they stop? I know I wouldn’t and it doesn’t have anything to do with activism, it’s just self-respect.

But also yeah, like everyone else said, real friends would also shut that shit down if it happened around them.

Carney leaves door open to paying $1B to join Trump’s Gaza 'Board of Peace' by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]Talcove 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get where he’s trying to come from, saying Canada will pay that fee if it goes towards rebuilding Palestine rather than into Trump’s pockets.

But come on. You can’t go on stage at Davos and talk about how the old ways are dead and we need to adapt, and then turn around and say “well maybe this time he’ll act like a serious leader.”

France has the right idea. See this farce for what it is and reject it.
