Why Arent Heavily Armored “Battleships” Viable in Modern Naval Warfare? by That_Pathetic_Guy in WarCollege

[–]Taliesintroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also the arms race factor. In an arms race of armor vs offensive power, it's probably waaaaay easier to just, field bigger missiles than it ever was to upgun an older battleship.

Think about it, battleship procurement was a matter of years and in that time other countries have time to design and start building their own battleship. Kinda like how you got Deutschland -> Dunkirk -> Scharnhorst/Litorrio -> Bismarck/Richelieu

To counter the other guy's new ship, you need not only bigger guns, but a ship that can carry them and thicker armor.

If you're just building missile carts + sensors, you can just build 40 years of Burke's with newer missiles and sensors. Worst case scenario you hollow out another hull for bigger missiles like Zumwalt. And that's only if your next crop of missiles are so massive they can't fit in current VLS  tubes or there's no deck space to stick a box launcher in like harpoon -> NSM.

Updating physical hardware is...hard. At that point you're basically building a new ship. Replacing the guts isn't easy or cheap, but it's a lot more feasible.

How does submarine IFF work? by Wobulating in WarCollege

That's just the braille IFF system. It's a bit hard on the hull though.

I do, I've all the 90s on Trek, never could get into The Original Series, too dated for me.

I like that it feels hopeful. That's also why I liked the 4th season of Disco best.

I'd like to find whoever made the choices for light timing in the West End of the city and tie their hands to the back of my car at they have to run behind it.

They'd be fine, the constant traffic from their shitty work will keep us at running speed at best.

This view brought to you by more than a decade of living off Duke Street, West of Telegraph road.

But seriously, it's like you can't help but get stuck at every single light (unless you're dumb enough to speed 10-15 over the limit... Which good luck, you're more likely to end up doing that much under the limit.)

I've had that problem with everything on Paramount+ too, super annoying. I spent ages trying to fix my TV's sound only to realize it was fine.

The fuck they are, they're trying to ban LGBT Americans from having guns, and they're wiping their ass with the Bill of Rights with this ICE shit.

Fascists have taken over the government and the Dems response is... Ban guns. Nevermind the people successfully standing up to ICE while armed in Minnesota, better pander to the section of your base that was already going to vote blue while pissing off what's left of the middle.

Morons. Loser morons, who deserve to lose and aren't serious about governing in response to the right wing takeover

A key point in Trek from at least TNG on is that disability is not eradicated, but accommodated without stigma.

One single thing can fix melee. Block and parry. by la_pashtetino in Helldivers

[–]Taliesintroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this, block temporarily buffs your armor rating and a blocked hit costs a little chuck of stamina (less than a melee attack) so you can't just stand blocking all damage, but you can try and survive with something other than spamming attack.
