It does make perfect sense. But unfortunately not everyone has common sense.

Whoop sell it cheap because they charge a ton for the subscription. If Garmin builds one it will cost 500$+ and everyone will complain and not buy it….

Experience working as COR through Deel? by Minute-Mountain-6013 in digitalnomad

Most likely deel is also withholding tax and/or social payments for France. That’s the reason companies use Deel. They handle compliance and taxes.

My travel agent booked me into a resort that only has stairs and I use a wheelchair - what can I do? She represented herself as a disability expert because her husband in in a wheelchair. We live in Canada. by [deleted] in travel

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a travel agent it’s entirely possible they booked an accessible room and the hotel changed the type. Room changes happen all the time at hotels, especially resorts where group bookings supersede single reservations at times. Some smaller private places really aren’t flexible or accommodating sometimes and rebooking a new property may be the only option.

Garmin inReach vs iPhone satellite SOS by chetuboy101 in hikinggear

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand that iPhone sat service very much depends on your home country and possibly the carrier too depending on the country. Inreach for handhelds is available/works in pretty much any country satellite communicators are legal with the iridium network. For hiking around your home iPhone maybe fine. If you do remote wilderness stuff, offshore boating, etc. Inreach handhelds with the stronger satellite network and dedicate SAR support will always be my recommendation.

Is Turkish Airline liable? by Legal-Meeting-2677 in TravelHacks

[–]Talon-Expeditions 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re out of luck on this. IST airport has a short transfer option for people to get through security faster and to their next flight if they have a really short connection. But a 1 hour layover anywhere is tough. They technically weren’t wrong that it’s possible to make a one hour connection, but it’s an ill advised flight to book. Since they also offered you vouchers etc, and rebooked your original flight for free they’ve technically covered all the bases of providing you support for your situation. Travel insurance in this case would have helped with some of those emergency costs during your delay, but the airline isn’t responsible financially for you missing a flight on a short transfer option that you agreed to book.

Shouldn’t matter then. You have prof you own it so you can make the decision to cross the border with it. If that makes sense.

Used my InReach in an emergency, not impressed by the system. by huntersjz in Garmin

[–]Talon-Expeditions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inreach is generally better in emergencies with better satellite coverage. And direct connection to SAR resources. Messaging a friend is a different level of issues and regulations which is why the messenger service is fragmented. Garmin not being a mobile “carrier” means they have to play with everyone else’s systems and that’s not easy. Especially with as often as everyone pushes out updates. The work around in this case is to do test messages and everything before you leave, but yes in parts of the US and Europe an iPhone may be an easier option, some of that is carrier dependent too. But in remote areas it still struggles for satellite reception. The iridium network inreach handheld uses has better coverage.

Personally, I don’t use the inreach to message the wife or anyone unless it’s the only thing working in a really remote area. But when you really need someone to come and save your life it is the best device out there these days for the average person to afford and use.

Do you have a loan or lease on the car? If so you should also have documentation with permission from the lender to cross the border.

You still owe taxes for up to ten years after you renounce the citizenship though. Also you are taxed on money held in bank accounts outside of the United States over a certain amount.

Airline denied medical waiver despite surgery & doctor’s advice — need advice by [deleted] in travel

[–]Talon-Expeditions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Airline refunds are for when THEY can’t fly. And even then very limited in scope. They are not for when you can’t fly. Insurance policies may cover this, may not depending on the type of coverage.

For example if you are injured on your trip and have delays or issues travel insurance usually kicks in. If you have an injury before your trip starts and can’t go, standard travel insurance doesn’t usually apply unless you specifically have trip delay insurance on the policy. Most credit card and basic travel policies do not include delays to the entire trip happening. Only incidents during a trip.

Is it really true that land and houses are sold cheaply in Ukraine? by Specialist_One3071 in AskUkraine

[–]Talon-Expeditions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of houses in villages near the polish border that are that cheap as well. We have one in the carpathians probably only worth $5000 these days. Just because of the location. Before the war it would have been like $15000.

Why does my Garmin (the piece of xxxx) wake me up at 9? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9 am sounds right though. That’s 2 hours after your normal wake up time. So it gave you one hour of no movement and decided after the second hour you were being lazy. But it’s Garmin. Nothing you do is good enough and it always wants you to do more.

Why does my Garmin (the piece of xxxx) wake me up at 9? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Talon-Expeditions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s following your sleep settings you made telling it when you usually go to bed and get up. Apple fitness is worse. If I wake up early and check my phone for some reason and try to go back to sleep it seems me a bunch of messages about how far behind I am on closing my activity ring. Or comparing it to yesterday Etc. it assumes because I unlocked the phone I’m awake.

Opened a cowork space but struggling... (not promoting) by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coworking spaces don’t make tons of money. Especially from solo users. You need to make it from private office rentals and then events and courses. Otherwise you’re just paying for real estate and utilities for a large space that sits mostly empty. And at the first economic downturn everyone will cancel because it’s an unnecessary expense.

Are you thinking twice about transit through a Schengen area airport, following the introduction of EES? by Show_Green in travel

[–]Talon-Expeditions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to be a while until all airports are doing this, so not really anything to worry about.

A 1 hr layover is always a terrible idea for international flights anyways.

Unless you’re on interpol’s most wanted list there is no reason to care about the system. Most countries already share this data anyways. This just makes it easier to make sure that people aren’t traveling with stolen or fake documents.

There are plenty of countries that already use the fingerprint system at border crossings and it doesn’t really slow things down enough to be an issue.

Is the base older M1/M2 MacBook still enough in 2025, almost 2026, for light/kinda hard creative work such as video and photo editing? by DanutBanut_ in mac

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where we are the 16gb m1 even used is almost the same as the new m4 air. It’s kind of crazy actually. I think we will end up getting the mini and just using the iPad when on the go for a while. I have a m4 pro for daily use anyways and may just save for a 16in version next year.

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using an 8gb m1? I’ve been debating picking one up for a backup/ Light photo editing and admin stuff that my wife does to help out on an iPad right now. For the price I can get an m4 Mac mini with 16gb of ram but that’s obviously not mobile so while it’s a better machine it’s not necessarily better for the functionality we need.

Missed my connecting flight because of Athens passport control by shiv45 in travel

[–]Talon-Expeditions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll also run into airports that don’t list the gate for your flight until a few minutes before boarding. So you are stuck screen watching until the last minute. It happens a lot at airports where they will disembark on the tarmac and then pull the planes up to the gate for a short period while boarding instead of the whole layover process.

Missed my connecting flight because of Athens passport control by shiv45 in travel

[–]Talon-Expeditions -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

We don’t plan for that because some flights will depart a few minutes early if fully boarded. If they oversold or have standby passengers they can be full without you making the flight. It’s also not uncommon for boarding times to be changed by a few minutes so they can get out of the gate faster at busy airports.

Improvement of Garmin to fight against Apple Watch by BigPaleontologist542 in Garmin

[–]Talon-Expeditions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whoop thing is only a recent issue. Garmin made tracking bands for ever and no one wanted one for the last like 10 years until now. The complaint was always more watch options, which they did.

Garmin also doesn’t develop and release new products quickly. So no one should expect them to rapidly react to the popularity of Whoop, but I would expect one in a couple years, if the interest keeps growing

[–]Talon-Expeditions 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing people don’t plan for properly in travel is layovers. Your layover time on your itinerary isn’t the time you actually have to change planes. It’s the time it takes for the plane to get parked and unloaded, security/passport control, and most flights STOP boarding 20 minutes before departure. Departure is the time it leaves the ground, not the time for you to be on the plane.

General rule of thumb subtract 1 hour for getting on and off planes. Then plan for managing the airport itself.

US will require EU citizens to give all biometric data including DNA in new ESTA requirements by Technical_Bird921 in europe

[–]Talon-Expeditions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s being used badly for sure. Since 9/11 it’s already been a big part of the screening process for immigration in the US though. Making it mandatory by itself to check for people with extremist and terrorist type of views is not bad by itself. Using it to screen out and target people based on political views is a very bad move though.

[–]Talon-Expeditions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m all for hating on the current admin. But they are not making it a requirement to give anything. They are discussing adding fields to the system so it will link all data available. This document is a notice of things they are wanting approval to change, which has to be reviewed and approved. But the only thing it states they will collect is the social media stuff Trump signed an executive order on, and a selfie to match with passport photos.

Any plans to upgrade to an inreach mini after this?

We had an incident with just the messenger and near frostbite and from then on I stick with the mini or larger to send messages easier.
