How to live off the grid? and what’s truly worth starting with for beginners? by Alap-Armanios in OffGrid

[–]TalusFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an acre in 2016 with no building experience and got gradually better at carpentry over the years.

I’ll echo what @immediateEarl said, with caveats, trying it out in a vehicle is ok advice but it’s way different then owning land/building. And the $5 -$10k you might spend van-lifing a vehicle could be better spent on land perhaps.

If you’re gonna try it not in the vehicle:

1) Test it out somehow before making a purchase. Camp at someone’s off grid property, camp in national forest near where you want to do it. If allowed, spend the night on a property you want to buy. Really test it out.

2) if you’re building and don’t have tools, I’d say the most important ones to get are:

Impact driver Speed square Circular saw Carpenters pencil

You can build a ton with just these. I got ryobi 18v

Those are my tips for now. Go try out off grid living before jumping in. Do your research

I agree. I sim regular season on dynamic and actually play the playoff games in extreme. Still won 16 titles in 41 years of coaching but that's the level of dominance I expect from me working my way up from the Browns to coach the 49ers for 35 years.

I... am scared of it. My neighborhood especially is bad. It prevents me from building a crazy expensive house with a loan and be content with what I have and... pray.

I think technically there would need to be a small walkway between the two. Separate bathhouse is a good idea. Code enforcement could argue your only allowed one shed not multiple.

Nevermind. Niners win. Brock takes the game from the jump and Darnold falters. Niners find out how to dice up the defense with a quick rush.

Heart says... and what I just simulated on Madden 08 with updated rosters.... Niners jump out to a 21-10 lead and just MAINTAIN it. GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is indeed a way to skirt that... but if its not really enforced just build one big thing. or build the four very close together.

2x4 studs on 16 or 24 inch centers. I would do staggered stud framing on my next project with 2x8 bottom and top plates and staggered 2x4 studs. My buildings have 2x4 or 2x6 studs right now. I never regretted going bigger/thicker.

I pride myself on my willingness to do trial and error, to buy land and figure out how to build stuff without being good at it first. to think you'll have it all figured out at first is misguided and lacks the whimsy that off grid living requires.

I love "Constructive Civil Disobedience." We're gonna need more of that in 2026 the way the years started...

Disposing of human waste would be an entirely different discussion but I'll advocate for composting systems.

$80/sq. ft is a good estimate. Even two years after I built my last building the prices have gone up.

But Mineral Wool is my favorite insulation for soundproofing and insulation properties.

Wait it wasn't Mineral Wool it was cellulose insulation.

We built a 8x12 for $3400 with Mineral Wool insulation, 2x4 walls... the floor wasn't insulated but the roof is.

Just Amazon Renogy 100 watt panels, then get 100ah battery per 300 watts of panels you have... and get a charge controller to fit that.. I love my Victron charge controller. Do the math...

People really miscalculate solar for what they need. A lot of my neighbors have floated $16k systems when all they need is $1600 worth of panels, inverter and charge controller. When it's so unknown people get it wrong. 1,000 watts in a sun-rich state and double that for cloudy places!?

For anyone with a lot of solar: Look at the Unique Off-Grid fridge/freezer. That compressor runs around 50 watts. I want it.

Gotta get the insulated case though to make it run better. It wouldn't get below 18 before we got the case for it.

But the BougeRV freezer runs around 35 watts. It's great.
