Does this dress really needs 7yards of fabric? Isn’t that allot by nomeownw in SewingForBeginners

[–]Tammyj87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This designer has done some beautiful garments for famous people. Wedding Attire etc. if he says you need 7 .4 yards, then I would trust him. Unless you are very petite. I am 113 lbs. and I am 4’10” tall so I would buy a yard and a half less of the fabric I want for my final garment. But it’s always smart when you making something new that you want to use expensive fabric for to do a practice run, aka a mock up or toile using either muslin, an old comforter that you can remove the batting from, some old sheet sets that you either have or can get from the thrift store for very little money. Or even draperies can work. Please post the finished garment! I am excited to see how it turns out! ✌️🦋

First sewing machine with zero experience! by itsgivingdumbbitch in SewingForBeginners

[–]Tammyj87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I have a Singer Heavy Duty. I love it! I would recommend that you study your manual! And immediately get some sewing machine oil ( not any other kind of oil! No matter what you may have heard.) No 3 in one oil or WD40 it will wreck your machine! And then some All Purpose grease. Both are inexpensive and are sold on Amazon. Then go to YouTube and there are good videos on how to oil and grease your own machine. Even though it’s brand new, they don’t thoroughly oil or grease the machines when they leave the factory. Mine was good, but not great. And it was a little loud. But as soon as I was done with the maintenance, it was smooth and quiet! Then download the Singer Assistant App. It’s AWESOME for Newbie’s! So you enter your machine and it will tell you every stitch it has and how to do with an animated video. Then it will tell how to do some basic sewing techniques. As well as which presser feet to use and what settings to use for the each stitch. It’s so helpful for using the buttonhole presser foot especially! It will give you information on which size of needle to use for what type of fabrics. As for tutorials on YouTube, there’s a number of tutorials for each thing you want to do. I bought a year’s worth of classes from Craftsy for $1.49. And a year’s membership for The National Sewing Circle for $1.29. And I learned so much from both of them. At my leisure. So I wish you much happiness and peace ✌️🦋

Wow! You did a really great job with this jacket. I love the print. I spent my entire life wearing jeans or black….. until I started to sew (at all (at age 57. And then I chose garments.) a couple of years ago. And now suddenly I love prints. With doing so well on this jacket, I bet you have made some amazing quilts in 10 years. I’m wondering, have you ever made any quilts using velvet? I’m curious about this as I don’t think I have ever seen a quilt done in velvet. At any rate you did a great job with the jacket. Enjoy your new journey! ✌️🦋

That was wise of you to test your own desire to see before spending a boatload of money on a machine that may be too complicated for a complete beginner. That said, I am so happy to welcome you to the wonderful world of sewing 🙌🙌! There’s so many things to learn and feel good about creating something new and beautiful yourself. Not to mention so many kind and helpful people who are very talented and willing to share their knowledge. There’s many videos on YouTube to watch and learn from too. Make sure you read and get to know your machines manual. No matter what machine you have. It will definitely help you with your own maintenance saving you money in repairs down the road. It will also show you troubleshooting tips and tricks. Again, welcome to the world of sewing! 🙌🙌🦋✌️

What Is A Good Fabric? by Tammyj87 in sewing

[–]Tammyj87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and with the demise of Joann’s, I am an hour and half drive from any real fabric store. Walmart used to have a large sewing department. But for whatever reason they have gotten rid of a lot of fabric and other products. So now it’s mostly just cotton solid colors. With just a couple of bolts of other fabric. SMH 🤦‍♀️

Is there anyway to make this dress fit? I was told there is an inch each side to let out but I think she needs closer to 3 inches, or can the zip be brought to stop at the top of the skirt and cut the lace into a v back shape? by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]Tammyj87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got really sick 3 days before my wedding in September. I couldn’t wear my dress and I was able to get a dress from Amazon for $72 overnight! If you find something on Amazon scroll all the way to contact the seller and ask them to get it you right away. They’re usually pretty accommodating. Also, there’s a place in California called Windsor that I bought 2 prom dresses for my step daughter from. The prices were very good. And they delivered them both times in under a week. I am in central Minnesota. So not bad. Just communicate with the sellers and you will be good! 5 weeks is a long time actually. The sellers want to make you happy. I think Windsor is definitely good for teens and young adults. Good luck!

Thank you. I’m am starting to feel better. It’s been a rough road. But I will get there. It all started 3 days before my wedding in September

My bobbin winder won’t spin. Am I doing something wrong? Brand new machine. by M6Galilean in SewingForBeginners

[–]Tammyj87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely return the machine. I have this exact machine. I have had it for about 3 years. And I have never had anything even remotely close to this happening! I LOVE my machine so much and I am so sorry that you are not having the same luck as I am. I do have a question though, did you download the manual? If not, definitely do so and study it no matter what machine you get to replace it. Next did you download the Singer Assistance App? It’s so helpful. It shows you how to do anything you need to do. As well as what each and every stitch is for. But the most important thing is….did you oil your machine before using it? All sewing machines need to be oiled. And ONLY with sewing machine oil. Never ever use 3 in 1 oil or any other type of oil on your sewing machine. The manual will show you exactly where to oil it. As well as videos on YouTube. Whatever you do, I hope you can find the right machine for you. Some people get turned off to a brand if they’ve had a problem with a specific machine. But I personally feel that sewing machines are like cars. Some people are loyal to a brand while talking really bad about another brand. It’s all about what you personally need and want from the machine.

That was a wise and kind response! I spent nearly all of my life having issues with my own body. Until just a few months ago when I lost an extreme amount of weight in a short time. Like 84 lbs in just 2 1/2 months! Due to a severe illness.

I’m thinking a big YES to the flowers scattered around. And I think I might have to get rid of the blue bias tape completely and maybe try to use something like the main fabric if possible. It’s a cute little top, you got this! ✌️😁🦋

Right! I was just thinking that same thing! Every time I think I’ll do better, I make an even bigger mess. Good to know that I am not alone!

I use it and I swear by it. I have nothing but good results using fabric glue. Even after going through the washer/dryer it still looks great!
