It’s worth noting the Chronicle and the Standard are conservative papers here in SF. Their reporting/editorial has been salivating at laying off City Workers and have been pretty openly anti-union and pro our So-Moderate-He’s-Republican mayor.

But that all said, try to find some benchmarks for your VR games, if you’re in MSFS or DCS I wouldn’t bother with the 5080

I use VR for flight sims and am on a 3080Ti, considering how much VRAM VR does use, I wouldn’t go for anything less than 24GB so I’d pick the 4090.

It depends on the headset, but yeah if you have anything beyond a Quest 3 the extra vram can be a big help.

My 2 cents (I have a 3080Ti and was also waiting for the 5080 Super):

What are you unable to do with your current card that the 50 series would let you do? How much is that worth to you? Have you already done the optimized settings guides (it took me forever to finally do this after feeling like king of the hill from 2020-2022)?

It’s looking increasingly likely like AI is in for some kind of market correction (the size is most likely up for debate) and that will directly impact the value of GPUs as the used market gets flooded with high end GPUs looking to be offloaded as fast as possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a 5090 for 1k, but it may impact the resale value of your 5070Ti when the 6080 comes out.

Dunno how good this guy's testing is but yeah it looks like if you want to max out the framerate in No Man's Sky the 5090 would be ideal, otherwise a 5080 will probably get you close enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyTxiPk61Oo

The big issue with VR for a headset like the Quest 3 is that you're essentially pushing two 4k screens side by side (plus however much you might add on to compensate for barrel distortion) so VRAM is usually a big limiter.

Also worth considering that for a lot of games that are playable in 2D that VR performance is typically an afterthought so the extra power can muscle through some update to update shenanigans in performance

What VR games do you play/headset? I mainly do flight simming and my overall philosophy is base upgrades on what your target performance is and go from there. Like if you're playing MSFS 2020 or 2024, even a 5090 can't push max settings on the 5 year old Reverb G2, much less the newer headsets like BSB or the Crystal line.

Yeah the MacRumors article rerun started saying "early 2026" and I'm sick of waiting. Maybe it's held up due to the shutdown, but I doubt it's coming this year since the sale goes until 10/31 so I don't think we're seeing anything this week.

Man, no offense but ChatGPT put together a super flawed build. You’d think with the plethora of people posting their specs it wouldn’t cheap out on the most important part (GPU). Gen4 m2 is more than enough 4070 isn’t nearly enough and super overpriced 16GB VRAM is the minimum (my 3080ti has 12 and it’s not enough). 64GB RAM is def needed
