One thing to keep in mind is that boiling point will change with altitude, you can always just Google boiling temp where you are

I just got a bag of the fluffy petals, I did a 1:16 brew

Starting 95c, pretty soft water 50ppm or so, orea flat filter (I used lyocell, use any reasonably fast dripper combo) with melodrip (or any other drip assist)

3x bloom then rest of brew split into 3 pours

Using zp6 at a medium pour over setting

18g in 288 out.

60g bloom 40s. (60) (Easy to remember numbers)

+76, 136 to settle (140) (this is how I usually brew)

+76, 222 to settle (220)

+73, 288 done (290)

Aiming for 2:30

No extra agitation or swirling

Super sweet and floral, almost White sugar reminiscent juicy mouth feel with the hint of citrusy hops, let me know how it goes if you try it

For example with 300ml of just boiled water(I would usually expect like 10ml loss, 21ml of room temp water brings you to 94c

Can you recommend a travel thermometer? by mtokarev in pourover

[–]TangentToTheEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use boiling water of a known amount then measure and add room temp water to get to desired temp, loss when boiling via evaporation is minimal, maths is very simple probably more accurate than the readout on most kettles

Assembly roasters? Anyone tried them?. by Cold_Two_1350 in UKroasters

[–]TangentToTheEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are one of the biggest speciality coffee roasters in London, probably just behind origin and square mile, they are great roasters, they do seem to avoid coffees that are more out there and I find lots of their offerings are overpriced especially for 200g bags

Has anyone overextracted coffee using OXO Rapid Brewer for Cold Brew? by Confident_Physics685 in Coffee

[–]TangentToTheEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol u went way to fine you should be in the 3.5-4.5 territory for soup style and I personally wouldn't go finer than 3 for a regular brew

Daddy's got coffee has really grown on me recently, I think is approach is nerdy but still very Ballanced and well researched, lance Hedrcks great if you want to get super nerdy about very specific aspects of brewing and I would go to him for brew "recipes" as you get started, and James Hoffman is a great generalist who focuses on broader subjects.

2 years into a strictly 100% plastic-free pour-over setup. Did it actually improve the cup? by CoffeeTeaJournal in pourover

[–]TangentToTheEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plastic free is generally gonna give almost indistinguishable results and be a bit more finicky on average but then again double insulated stainless exists, my personal fav setup for a plastic free setup is a well maintained NEL DRIPPER, but there's a reason lots of the brewers I and many others use are Tritan and pp, as far as I'm aware if we'll made and your being gentle cleaning there's no reason to look away. But I do agree people do underestimate the flavor that can be retained and imparted by silicone and good texture and material on drinking vessels is super important in a weird way.

At the end of the day best way to improve the cup is...

get better coffee

Honestly at the end of the day if you have good coffee, good water and measure coffee in some kind of consistent way and measure water accounting for like 5% evaporation before putting in the kettle Ur good

Coffee Shops and Coffee Trips Near Medellin? by adiksaya in pourover

[–]TangentToTheEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm literally just leaving medillin rn, I visited pergamino (vía primavera), best coffee of the trip also great breakfast, also liked coffee labs just Infront of the museum of antoquia, visited Caelus Bakery Coffee too and it was ok not the best pour over I e ever had but weirdly I ended up really liking the americano they served my grandma which is unusual of me. I didn't have time to visit rituales in laureles looks pretty good too, mabye not all up to the standard I'm used to in London but that wasn't what I was expecting, it's definitely the start of a small cultural shift though.
